Sacramento State, The WELL
Intramural Sports Participant’s Guide

Intramural Program Overview and History

“Intramural,” Latin for “within the walls.” For over 10 years, Sacramento State’s Intramural Sports Program has
provided opportunities “within the walls” of Sacramento State for all of its students and regular faculty and staff
to participate in organized recreational competition. This program strives to offer the university community
structured leagues and tournaments in a diverse array of activities including but not limited to basketball, flag
football, tennis, golf, volleyball and indoor/outdoor soccer. Each event is presented under the simple philosophy
that an Intramural program should be fun, fair and safe.

Eligibility

Any active member of The WELL is eligible to participate in an Intramural Sport contest. This includes current
students, University Faculty, University Staff and Sacramento State University alumni.

HOW TO REGISTER
Interested participants may register a team online at www.imleagues.com/thewellsacstate or at the Intramural
Resource Center (IRC) located across from the Gym Box in The WELL during our hours of operation. Individuals
looking to join a team may come to the IRC to sign up based on individual availability. Teams are placed in leagues
or tournaments on a first-come, first-served basis.

LEVELS OF PLAY
Our Intramural Sports activities are broken down into Men’s, Women’s, Greek, Co-Rec and Open leagues. Within
each league, players may only participate with one organization or team in any sport during the same season.

PLAYING ON ONE TEAM
A participant may play on only one men’s/women’s team and additionally only one co-rec team. Once a
participant plays for a team, he/she may not switch to a different team. Any participant found playing on two
or more teams (i.e. two men’s, two women’s or two co-rec teams) will automatically be removed from any team
on which they have been found to be playing except for their initial team and any game the participant played in
illegally will result in a forfeit. Intramural Office will enforce this policy without exception. It is the captain’s
responsibility to make sure all players on his/her team are only participating on one team.

PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES
 Current and former professional athletes are ineligible to participate in the same or a related Intramural
sport in which he/she was a professional.
 These athletes are eligible, however, for participation in any sport unrelated to their professional sport.
 For Intramural Sports purposes, a professional athlete is defined as an individual who has received
financial compensation for their play.

VARSITY ATHLETES
 A varsity athlete is defined either as a currently listed member of a university varsity team or as a former
member of a university varsity team who played in a varsity contest.
 Members of a varsity team are ineligible to participate in a related Intramural sport for 365 days from
their last competition date.
 As with former athletes, students who have competed on the college (2- or 4-year institution) varsity
level with other institutions are ineligible to participate in a related Intramural sport for at least two full
semesters, not counting summer sessions, from the last semester they competed.
 All current members of varsity teams are ineligible for the same or similar Intramural sports.
 Varsity athletes are eligible for all other Intramural sports outside of that which they play at the
collegiate level. All athletes are encouraged to check with coaches and administrators of their sports for
athletic department guidelines.
 Each intramural team shall be permitted to have a maximum of two (2) former varsity athletes
participating on a related Intramural sport. There is no maximum for former/current varsity athletes
playing in non-related sports.

Captain’s Responsibilities

Each team registered to participate in an Intramural activity must have a designated team captain who will act
as the official liaison between the team and the Intramural Department. It is the team captain’s responsibility to
inform his/her team of all rules, regulations, and procedures.

Basic responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
a) Registering the team into the league/event
b) Attending/Completing all necessary captain’s meetings/quizzes for each sport, tournament or event
c) Submitting and monitoring the team’s official roster through IMLeagues to include:
I. Checking the eligibility of each player before and during the season.
II. Prior to and upon completion of the regular season, ensuring all players who participated on
his/her team are listed on the official roster on the team’s IMLeagues site. Team’s rosters will
be frozen following the completion of the regular season.
d) Notifying the team and participants as to time and place of the scheduled activity.
e) Becoming familiar with the rules, regulations, and procedures of the Intramural Sports Department.
f) Becoming familiar with the rules and regulations governing each sport.
g) Organizing the team to play according to the rules and spirit of the game and to conduct themselves
with proper sportsmanship. This responsibility also extends to helping the team’s fans understand the
game rules and proper sportsmanship.

TEAM ROSTERS
It is each team captain’s responsibility to ensure that all team members are registered for the team on
IMleagues.com. Players that are not registered on IMleagues.com must be registered prior to participating in a
match. A player may be added to a team’s IMleague.com account prior to any game given there is an open
roster spot. Medical paperwork stating a person is no longer capable of physical activity is the only reason a
person will be removed from a roster and is at the discretion of the Intramural Staff. Each team’s roster will be
frozen following their last regular season game. During playoffs, a participant must be listed on that team’s
master roster and have played at least one regular season game to be eligible for playoffs. Each sport may have
additional limitations on rosters.

Player’s Responsibilities

Players must be registered on IMleagues.com prior to the game. If a player is not registered on IMleagues.com,
they must create an account and/or register for his/her team prior to participating. Each player is required to
bring a valid photo ID to every intramural sports contest.

PROPER ATTIRE
It is very important that all participants follow these guidelines when preparing for their Intramural Sports
season. Non-marking athletic shoes must be worn in any indoor playing facility as well as the Tennis Courts.
Turf shoes are not allowed on any indoor playing surface. Proper athletic attire, shirts or tops must be worn at
all times in all public areas. Athletic shoes and molded or plastic cleats are allowed on all grass surfaces. Metal
spikes or metal tipped cleats are prohibited.

UNIFORM POLICY
Matching colored team shirts will be required in all variations of basketball, soccer, football, volleyball, kickball
and certain special events. The sport of soccer requires each goalie to have a different color shirt than his/her
teammates and opponents. Jerseys/shirts with one or two-digit numbers on the front or back are required in
both soccer and basketball.

Gray shirts/jerseys will not be allowed. Prior to game time, the Intramural Sports Supervisor, in conjunction
with the game officials will determine if conflict exists regarding jersey colors. If a gray jersey is identified, that
individual will need to find an alternative option that matches their team’s color of either white or dark. They
will not be allowed to play in a gray jersey.

CHECKING IN
Players must be registered on IMleagues.com prior to the game. If a player is not registered on IMleagues.com,
they must create an account and/or register for his/her team prior to participating.

Before a match, all team members must check in with an official at their field or court. All participants must
provide their Sac State OneCard to an official in order to participate. The player’s identity will be verified and
jersey number noted on the scorecard. All players listed on the scorecard and verified before the contest will be
considered participants in that contest. Should a player not be verified, that player will be considered as an
ineligible player.

If a participant does not have an OneCard, they must provide another form of photo Identification and one of
the following:

 Proof of current enrollment
 Proof of current Well Membership

Risk Management

PARTICIPANT SAFETY
All participants are required to have activated their membership with The WELL and, in doing so, signed the

member.

 All participants acknowledge an assumption of risk by voluntarily entering into any Intramural sports
event or activity.

 All participants must complete a waiver of liability form prior to entering into Intramural competition.
There will be no exceptions.

specific event governing bodies for play and safety. The Intramural program also reserves the right to adjust
event rules and make judgments based on the need for greater safety for event staff, participants and officials.

Protests & Appeals

Questions pertaining to interpretation of rules on the part of game officials must be addressed by the intramural
supervisor at the time the interpretation occurs and prior to the restart of play. The procedure shall be:

 If a team feels the official has made a misinterpretation or misapplication of a rule, the captain shall
calmly and immediately inform the official that he or she wishes to have a ruling on the interpretation
by the intramural supervisor in charge.

 No protest, which involves the judgment of the official(s), shall be considered. The judgment of the
official(s) is final.

 If corrections are necessary, the intramural supervisor shall rule immediately.
 If the participant still does not agree with the decision at the game site or a supervisor is not

immediately available, the contest will continue from this point “under protest” and the team captain
must complete a protest form immediately following the conclusion of the game.

Protests involving player eligibility must be called to the immediate attention of the intramural supervisor prior
to the completion of the contest while the protested individual is present. Eligibility protests may not be made
by participants after the completion of the contest. A protest form should be obtained from the intramural
supervisor and completed. The contest will continue from this point “under protest.”

Due to time constraints, protests during the playoffs will be decided by the Intramural Sports Supervisor on
duty. The decision of the Intramural Sports Supervisor is final and cannot be appealed.

League & Tournament Structure

Leagues will be structured in either 4, 6 or 11 week formats. Teams will play twice a week (except for Indoor
Soccer which only plays once a week) with games usually held on Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and
Thursdays.

Teams which qualify for playoffs through regular season achievement and sportsmanship will be put into a
single or double elimination bracket in order to determine a champion for the sport.

Tournaments will typically be run as a one day or week long event. Based on the number of teams participating,
Tournaments will run in one of the following formats.

 A group stage with a single elimination playoff or championship game
 Single elimination tournament
 Double elimination tournament

PLAYOFF STRUCTURE
Teams winning their regular season division will automatically advance to the playoffs.

PLAYOFF SCHEDULING CONFLICTS
If a playoff team is scheduled to play a contest during a date and time different from their regular season
timeslot, and more than 50% of that sport’s max roster is unable to attend the contest due to a documentable,
CSUS related, schedule conflict, Intramural Sports will try to reschedule the contest to a more preferable time.
The team must contact IM Sports with at least 24 hours’ notice. If no alternate times are available, then the
team is expected to attend the originally scheduled time.

Intramural All-Campus Championship

DESCRIPTION:
In an effort to create a more rewarding and engaging experience, the Intramural Sports Department has created
a point system that will be used to crown an All Sports Intramural Champion. The point system provides more
incentive for individuals and groups to participate in intramurals by increasing the level of competition for many,
while still providing the fun atmosphere that our participants have come to love.

12

Intramural Sports Participant’s Guide | The WELL at Sacramento State | 6000 J Street Sacramento, CA 95819 | thewell.csus.edu/intramurals | (916) 278-1789

ELIGIBILITY
 A team participating in the All-Campus Championship must keep the same team name over all
registered sports in order to accumulate points for each sport. A captain may register for different
sports using different team names, but must register each team under his entry in the All-Campus
Championship at the Intramural Resource Center.
 All teams consisting of individuals that meet the eligibility requirements to participate in intramural
sports are permitted to participate.
 Regardless of the number of teams entered by a particular group, only one team within that group will
be eligible to accumulate points. Any or all teams from a group could receive deductions; however, the
team that finishes highest in the playoffs will be the team that will accumulate the points.
 Teams must participate in a minimum of four leagues or tournaments.

AWARDS
Champion t-shirts will be distributed to each team who wins the championship in their respective league. T-
shirts will only be awarded to players who are on the team roster and had played in at least one regular season
contest.

POINT SYSTEM
The points can be earned in three methods; participation, sportsmanship, and achievement. Multiple teams can
be entered in the same sport under the same All Campus Champion entry. Only the team that receives the most
points in all categories will earn points, but all teams can lose points.

 Participation (winning percentage includes playoffs)
o Captain’s Quiz Completion = 15 points
o League Sports
 Winning Percentage x 100 points
