COVID-19 VACCINATION PROGRAMME
OVER 100,000 VACCINATIONS!

We are very pleased and proud to announce that Minster Surgery and its
PCN Partner Surgeries, have administered 100,000 vaccinations to patients
at the Saga Vaccination clinic. This milestone was achieved on Tuesday
8th June and was attended by the local Press and NHS Managers (see
pictures on page 22). To date the number of administered vaccinations has
now risen to 105,000.
This has contributed to approximately 96% of all vulnerable people in
Thanet being fully vaccinated and 85% of all groups receiving at least one
dose of a Covid-19 vaccination.
Vaccination Clinics are continuing to be held at the Saga Centre in Westwood Cross, including Pfizer “walk in” clinics on some Saturdays. Invitations
are being sent out to all vulnerable groups and at risk patients and currently to all those aged 18 and over. Further up to date information can be found
on the following website:

www.nhs.uk/coronavirus

Currently we are receiving supplies of both the Oxford AstraZeneca and Pfizer vaccines, so if you have not yet received your first dose, or may have
initially declined the vaccine, please BOOK NOW!
Please note: Once you have had your vaccination you may be asked to sit and wait for 10-15 minutes, depending upon individual circumstances.

NATIONAL LOCKDOWN ROAD MAP
Despite “Freedom Day” being delayed, we still have access to many services and can still meet family and friends, but sadly cases are
rising, mainly due to the “Delta Variant” ‘so: Please DO NOT get complacent, exercise caution and follow the rules. For Everyone's Safety -
Remember:

And above all “PROTECT THE NHS”

PLEASE BEAR WITH US!
As you can appreciate many of our staff are also working at the Vaccination Hub and with staff sickness our resources are being stretched,
but please rest assured we are here for you! It may take us a little longer, but if you need to be seen by a healthcare professional, we will
ensure you will be. Thank you.

SURGERY CLOSURE DAYS
STAFF TRAINING: Thursday July 22nd from 1pm onwards.
If you need to see a doctor during these times, please call 111 for non-urgent confidential help and
advice for you and your family. For COVID-19 help and advice call 119 and for urgent/life
threatening cases call 999 as normal.

REPEAT PRESCRIPTIONS
Please ensure you have sufficient medication to last you through these difficult times and repeat

MINSTER CHRISTMAS 2021

SAVE THIS DATE

SATURDAY 11th DECEMBER 2021

4.00pm till 7.00pm

Christmas Fayres in both the Old Schools and Minster Village Hall. If you make Christmas gifts or crafts and would like to book a table
for the Village Hall Fayre please contact Louise Vickers on 07827 296 589.
There are a few outside pitches available – you will need your own gazebo, lighting and table.

Minster School Choir and Village Voices will be singing Christmas songs in the Churchyard. Village Voices may also be singing earlier
in the day, around the centre of the village, to tempt you all to come out later to enjoy the evening.

Hopefully Morris Men will be dancing in the streets around the Church.

Vince and Wendy from The Bell Inn will hopefully be selling mulled wine from their car park.

It will be dark, so we will need lots of lanterns and lights to keep everyone visible and safe.

This year our theme is to pay homage to the Christmas Elf so hopefully we can have an Elf costume competition, time to start thinking
about what to wear.
Anyone interested in becoming a hot chestnut seller for the afternoon? You would need to be able to research and make your own
equipment.

Carol McCarthy will be organising a treasure hunt around the village for the children. More details to follow.

Katy and Ian Andrews will be organising a village raffle.

Leanne McCarthy is going to organise Advent Christmas windows. If you would like to offer your
window then please contact her on 07784 485 494. Hopefully all the shops in the village will
decorate at least one of their windows.

To follow the Christmas Elf theme, Ray has added these two links to a knitting pattern for Elves
http://www.minstermatters.org.uk/Christmas-Elves-Pattern.pdf or
http://www.minstermatters.org.uk/Christmas-Elves-Pattern.docx – note: clicking either link will

not open a web page but will just download the pattern - they are both the same just in two different

file formats. Contact Ray on 07914 623 287 or email [email protected], if you are unable

to download either, and he’ll print a copy for you.

I would like to decorate all the lampposts from the Co-op to the Church, with an Elf. So, any knitting
volunteers, please download the pattern and use any red, green and white colours to make them.
The middle-sized Elf is ideal for lampposts BUT PLEASE sew his head on sideways so he isn’t staring
at the post !!

If you usually decorate your garden and home, please consider incorporating some Elves. Maybe we
could have an Elf Trail through the village.
It would be nice if we could get together and have Elf making afternoons. Anyone interested, then
again, let me know. Maybe some of you have some Elf crafts that you could share with us?

If you would like to volunteer for any of the following then please message me:-

1. Create an Elf Trail through the village 2. Arrange an Elf costume competition

3. Start Elf craft lessons 4. Hot Chestnut seller

5. Making some lanterns to add light and atmosphere to the event.

We will need more volunteers on the day to make sure the event goes well. The more people involved the better.

All suggestions and ideas will be gratefully received.

Despite the extension to the lockdown, rehearsals for our autumn
play, Duets, will be going ahead as planned, and will be performed
in conformity with current Covid guidelines. Bookings are currently

It seems a long time ago now, but in January 2020 the Playhouse

We are still having problems
with our website, but we hope that it will be
up and running correctly soon. In the
meantime, the correct details for our next
production, Duets, by Peter Quilter and
directed by Steve Clement are:
Duets will be performed at Minster Village
Hall from Wednesday 8th to Saturday 12th
September at 7.30pm. To attempt to comply
with any possible restrictions that might then
be in place, the audience will be seated at
tables, and invited to bring any refreshments
you wish for the interval.

Restoration of Minster Church Clock Face

The church of St. Marys-in-Thanet Minster is believed to date from Saxon times and plays an
important part in the life of Minster Village and the surrounding area. It is a Grade 1 listed
building and sits next to Minster Abbey which was established following the landing of St.
Augustine at Ebbsfleet nearby in 670AD.

In the 1860s the church underwent a major renovation including the clock and its face. There
is a date of 1870 on the current clock face. The clock mechanism was overhauled in the 1920s
and Minster Parish Council have recently agreed to take over the maintenance from TDC
following withdrawal of support. The ravages of time have had a serious effect on the clock
face itself and it is now in dire need of restoration.

July 2021 Minster Matters 15

Without this restoration the village is likely to lose the clock forever.

We know that the church clock face was present in 1790 as JMW Turner painted the church
as a 14-year-old prior to entering the Royal Academy of Art.

The restoration of the clock face is a very specialised expensive process and involves skilful

work in its removal and replacement. Therefore, a small group of villagers John Quittenden,

Derek Crow-Brown, Alan Gimes and Sue Hergest have come together in an effort to raise the

sum of £15,000 in order that this clock face can be restored to its former glory at the heart of

the village.

A JustGiving page has been created to enable those wish to donate to this restoration:-
https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/minster-clock-face-restoration

Alternatively, donations can be made to following Post Office Account opened specifically for

the purpose:- DETAILS REDACTED

An informative Facebook page has also been created and will be part of the official launch of

the project on 10th July 2021. This will explain the history of the clock, to outline the progress
of the appeal and subsequently the process of restoration.

The launch will be at 1100hrs in the church grounds along with, hopefully, some village

entertainment and will tie in with the Minster Open Gardens Event.

We also hope to stage some fund-raising events in the future as well as providing a pictorial

display in the village of the progress towards the total. Thank you.

PCSO’s REPORT
Dear all,
I was on annual leave when asked to submit something for the magazine,
and as I was soaking up the sunshine, it occurred to me that giving out
some crime prevention advice would be a good idea.
The topic I have decided on is something called a -

Distraction Burglary
Distraction burglars pretend to be someone they are not in order to gain entry to your
home.
Common methods used by distraction burglars are

pretending to be from a care agency, the council or a utility company
investigating a gas or water leak

seeking help to leave a note for a neighbour or even asking for a drink of water
if they claim to be thirsty or unwell

claiming to be in a hurry or emergency and needing to get into your home quickly
working in teams, with one person distracting you while the other searches your

home

How to prevent it
There are a number of things you can do to prevent distraction burglary. Always
remember "if in doubt, keep them out":

use your door viewer to see who’s there
if you open the door put the chain on first
always ask for ID and check it with the company before letting somebody into

your home
use the phone number advertised in the phone book or online, as the number

on their identity card could be fake. For a utility company, call the customer
service department. Close the door while you do this
remember that genuine callers won’t mind checks. If you feel at all unsure,
schedule a time for the caller to come back when a friend or relative is there
for pre-planned appointments with utility companies, a password scheme can
be set up

If you feel threatened or in danger by the presence of the caller, call 999.
Just to reiterate IF IN DOUBT KEEP THEM OUT!!
Stay safe and see you soon,
