MINSTER TWINNING ASSOCIATION
The annual visit to Armbouts Cappel Remembrance Service took
place on 11 November when a delegation from Minster were
welcomed. Wreaths were laid from Minster Twinning Association,
Minster Parish Council and Minster Carnival Court at the memorial
in the town square. It was a very colourful setting with our red
wreaths amidst multi-coloured chrysanthemums. Their band played
enthusiastically and school children sang the Marseillaise, before a
short parade around the village ensued.
At lunch, the Armbouts Cappel committee were presented with gifts
of enamel poppy badges and although belated, a commemorative
bone china mug depicting the late Queen Elizabeth. These were well
received.
Prior to the return ferry from Dunkirk, an educational visit to the
“Duchesse Anne Museum” in the docks of Dunkirk was enjoyed.
On 13 November the Remembrance Service took place in Minster,
but unfortunately our friends were unable to join us this year. They
had previously sent over a wreath for us to lay on their
behalf. This was made by Madeleine Dumotier from
cornflowers, to pay tribute to those who sacrificed
their lives. In France, these are also known as blueys.
This was laid at the memorial in Minster cemetery.
This is the last edition of Minster Matters for 2022,
so updates on our Annual General Meeting, which
will be held whilst the magazine is at the printers, will
be reported in January.
It just remains for the Association to thank everyone
who has supported us this year and I’m sure will
continue to do so in the future. We wish everyone in

A Christmas Viewpoint
Gift wrap will feature strongly this month; after careful choice will come the thoughtful wrapping of the
presents, to be hidden until Christmas morning. Eager hands will then tear into the wrappings which, in
seconds, will be in the bin.
Of course, it is not the paper but the gift which is important, yet who will deny the value of the humble gift
wrap? If we were to present our gift unwrapped, (price tag and all!), what would that say?
Turning to the Christmas story we find that much of the familiar presentation is but wrapping paper!
Consider a Christmas Crib, with Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus in the manger. Around them the ox, ass
and donkey, shepherds with lambs, an angel or two overhead while, outside, the three kings wait. It looks
so warm and cosy, but the reality in Bethlehem, was very different.
“While Mary and Joseph were in Bethlehem, the time came for her to have her baby. She gave birth to her
first son, wrapped him in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in
the Inn. (Luke 2, 6&7).
Just two verses and no mention of a stable! The manger might have been sheltered but it could have been
just a fixture on a wall facing the street. No animals, no angels, no lambs; only the shepherds as visitors.
The three wise men, (not kings), came later after the family had found a house.
Our crib features are mainly a collection of assumptions but, to put it more perceptively, they are the
wrapping paper lovingly smoothed around the greatest gift ever received by humankind.
The Gift of God himself in Jesus Christ, born to show us how much we are loved, and how we can
reflect that love in this often disturbed and troubled world.
A very Happy and Blessed Christmas to you all,
Peter Gausden
