I haven’t actually written an editorial piece for a couple of years or so now, but I felt the circumstances were such that I really needed to ‘put pen to paper’ and make the effort to write a short piece, especially this month, so here we go ---- I was, to say the least, very humbled to receive, what to me is a substantial amount of money, which I’m told was donated by residents in response to a small flyer they had received, that had been delivered by some of my fabulous team unbeknownst to me. So, a special THANK YOU to everyone who delivered and/or contributed, it truly wasn’t expected, but nevertheless it is greatly appreciated. To say I was overcome to see how much many of you thought of Minster Matters and my efforts to keep it going as long as I could, which was surely shown in the long list of comments (If there is room I will have included them elsewhere in this issue) that came with the card and wonga that former MPC Chair Penny Gimes delivered to me, I feel this short missive doesn’t really say enough in the way of thanks, but words fail me at this time (How did that ever happen!!). What to do with it? That’s my dilemma now, as I don’t have any great desires to dash out and buy something just for the sake of it, so I’ve done the sensible thing and banked most of it for now, but will, I can assure you, put it to good use as and when I find something to spend it on. HOWEVER, I have spent some of it on something I’ve always wanted but never felt I could warrant buying, as my pension, sadly, isn’t a bottomless purse. SO, what I’ve now done is ‘splashed out’ and purchased a ‘cherished registration’ for our car, which we hope to have on her very soon. So, look out for our little grey Hyundai sporting the registration mark RJ 04 MRO (I’m sure she’ll wear them with pride!!), and for the uninitiated that’s R.J.O. which are my initials (or even for Ray & Jenny Owen as that’s me and ‘her indoors’– take your pick!) and MRO for my nickname (Mr. O) given to me by my friends at Village Voices Choir and is a moniker to which I’ve become quite attached, much more so than my RAF nickname of ‘Chota’ , which I was reliably informed by my Flight Sergeant at the time, meant ‘small and insignificant’ (I’ve since checked in the mirror and he was probably correct.!!), but it stuck with me during my service engagement and beyond and I suppose I actually grew to quite like it, the same as I have done now with my new moniker, Mr O. “All I’ve got to do now is find a reasonably easy way of removing the security screws that are holding my present number plates on so as I can fit the new ones!!!” Anyhow enough of boring you with stories of my life, I just hope you all enjoy this issue and that I’ve included as many as possible of the items that have been sent in, probably not all of the photos though. (Nearly 90 of the De Selys Longchamp Service, alone !!) The countdown is now at 3 issues still to come, before my final farewell !!!! For anyone that may be interested copies of MM back to issue number 1 have always been available in the village archive but not online. I’ve hopefully now righted that wrong as I’ve recently spent a ‘fair few nostalgic hours’ at my dining table disassembling back issues (removing the staples) and scanning them into 1,262 electronic files (that’s one page at a time – phew!!), to add to those I’ve been regularly creating since I took over at around issue 71. So now all copies are available online, as downloadable PDF files, and if you are interested you can find them at this link: https://tinyurl.com/MinsterMattersArchive or via the QR code below These same links are also available on the Parish Council’s website at:- https://www.minsterparishcouncil.org.uk/communit y/minster-parish-council-15485/minster-mattersmagazine EDITORIAL

Well done to the winners Terry Leagas, Barbara White and Glynn Hibbert and the worthy runners up Ian Ward, Shirley Farrant and Steve Andrews. A special thank you to all of the club members who contributed to making the day such a success. We also had the delight of receiving a new bench in memory of one of our past and much respected members Laurie Walmsley, this was presented by members of his family and is very much appreciated. Once again we had a fantastic night celebrating Beatlemania, over 100 guests attended and thoroughly enjoyed an evening of music and dance. Can I offer a personal thank you to all of the team who organised and ran the event. The outdoor season is moving to its conclusion and we start to look forward to the finals of our in house competitions, which in turn will make way for the start of the indoor short mat season, don’t forget if you fancy a try please please give Steve Andrews a call on 01843 791142 to book a free taster/coaching session. 6 Minster Matters SEPTEMBER 2023 On Monday 21st August Minster born and BEER CAVE breed Gordon Nash and Minster resident Mark Thompson embarked on a planned day's cycling in and around Dunkirk. This included the pilgrimage to ArmboutsCappel the French twinned village of Minster! Gordon recalled a few stories of trips and football matches between the two villages in the past. Whilst cycling to the Armbouts-Cappel football pitch, we managed to speak in broken French/English to a local resident Jean Tigina, who didn't want to have his photo taken with 3 sweaty English cyclists, but he did remember football games between the two villages and coaches of Minster residents visiting the French village.

Together with Kent Police and our members, we aim to prevent financial abuse, stop doorstep criminals and protect residents, especially the vulnerable, from criminal and rogue traders. Trading Standards Checked carries out thorough checks on traders and has access to information that no other scheme in Kent has. I hope this was helpful Karl Kevin P. Wife of former Thanet MP Edward Carson, born 1920, and son of the late Lord Carson. After being educated at Eton and Cambridge, and passing through Sandhurst, he obtained a commission in the Life Guards and served in Syria, Italy, and Germany. He had intended to follow his father as a lawyer, but the war interrupted his studies and he entered Parliament in 1945 as member for Thanet.

The Friends of Kent Churches is a registered charity which distributes grant aid for maintenance of Kent churches of any denomination and age, provided they are in use as places of worship. Participants gather sponsorship and 50% of the money raised goes to the church or chapel chosen by the participant. The remaining 50% plus any gift aid, goes into the fund administered by the charity to be used for the grants. Participants plan their own routes, with the assistance of a printed list of churches and chapels open on the day; taking part for as long or short a time as they wish between 10am and 6pm. Over many years I have variously cycled around the Thanet churches (when I was much younger!), cycled around the Sandwich and Deal churches (gruelling!), walked through Herne Bay and Whitstable, through Deal and Walmer and the villages around Bridge (a delight!). Last year £124,565 was raised in Kent, with over 700 churches and chapels involved. The event started in Suffolk in 1982; Kent followed in 1984 and now thirty-six counties are participating. This year our participant for Minster (although there may yet be others) is Fran Kimmons. If you would like to sponsor her, please let me know ([email protected] 01843 822 428) or check out Fran’s ‘Just Giving’ page by first searching for ‘Friends of Kent Churches’ and then Fran’s fundraiser will come up under that umbrella. I will be walking with Fran, but for the benefit of Chislet church – another of our benefice churches. I think Fran and I have decided to walk the Deal and Walmer route which covers a United Reform Church, a Roman Catholic Church, a Community Church and C/E churches. In our own village, St. Mary’s will be open for participants to sign themselves in, also the Abbey and Salvation Army. If you are a member of another denomination do check to see if you have anyone to sponsor… And finally, a thought for all the children who will be starting their school life this month; and for those who are moving up through Key Stage 1 and 2; those starting secondary education and all those who are going off to college and university. Let’s hope the transitions go smoothly and that these places of education will bring out the best in our young people and help them reach their full potential.
