Covid-19 VACCINATION PROGRAMME - UPDATE

IMPORTANT INFORMATION- NEW VACCINE CENTRE

With the closure of the SAGA building in Westwood Cross, it has been necessary to relocate
the Vaccine Centre which is now located adjacent to “Wickes Building Supplies” and
“Curry's Electrical Store” and will be called “Thanet (Broadstairs) Vaccination Service (LVS)”
Once again there will be plenty of car parking on site and it is on various bus routes, and
will be open every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 8am to 5pm
SO PLEASE; DO NOT GET COMPLACENT!
Covid-19 cases in Thanet are still worryingly high, especially throughout schools where
coughs and colds are quite prevalent. There is no shortage of vaccines, so if you are not
fully jabbed or even double jabbed, get your vaccination now- no need for an appointment
just Drop-In!
So, who’s eligible?
* Booster jabs are now available for everyone over 18 but please remember there must
be 3 months since your second vaccination.
*Older teens aged 16-17 are now eligible for a second dose but must be at least 12 weeks
after their first and then likewise for their booster jab.
* Those aged 12-15 are now also eligible for a second does after 12 weeks.
Not had yours yet? There are still many patients who are unvaccinated and many others
who have not yet had their second vaccine. So don’t wait until it's too late! You can still
get seriously ill with Covid-19 or worse infect others!
For further information see the “MINSTER SURGERY” Facebook page. Please use
common sense where necessary and follow the guidelines:
So, for Everyone's Safety – “Wash Hands” “Cover Face” “Make Space” “Let Fresh Air In”
New persistent cough? Loss taste/smell? High temperature? Book a Test - Call 119
PLEASE NOTE: It will still be mandatory to wear a face mask when attending the surgery,
thank you.

“FACE-TO-FACE” Appointments
Patients will continue to receive a telephone consultation from a doctor before being
offered an appointment with the relevant healthcare professional. Currently 62% of
patients are receiving a face-to-face appointment where necessary.

Surgery Closure Days
Training from 1pm onwards - Thursday 24th February
If you need to see a doctor during these times, please

Minster Church Clock Face Restoration

Derek Crow-Brown, John Quittenden and Alan Gimes (pictured above) are very pleased to announce
that entirely due to the generosity of Minster residents and beyond, local businesses and the donations
from various local organisations the fund has achieved the £15,000 figure needed to restore the Church
Clock face. It is truly amazing to think it has only taken around 6 months to raise this figure.

The project was a result of a conversation between John and Alan in November 2020 whilst removing
the poppies from the top of the church. Sally and Paul Willins gave us some very valuable help in relation
to the history and work that had been carried out on the clock and its mechanism.

The intervention of the Covid restrictions meant a delay in starting the fund raising until June of last
year. Derek had agreed to help, and the project got going. It was soon clear that Minster residents
regarded the clock as an asset to the village and by their generosity, felt it was their clock and it should
be restored to its former glory. This will now be done.

The required notices have been displayed for 28 days and we now await a speedy permission from the
Canterbury Diocese that will start the process of removal and renovation by Smiths of Derby. St. Mary’s
Church Warden, Sue Hergest has been very helpful in this process. Scaffolding will have to be erected
to remove and replace the clock face and once removed, should take around 4 to 6 weeks before it is
ready to be replaced on the church.

We hope to publish a full visual record of the process and it will be fully documented for future
generations. Additionally, we are working on a re-commissioning event in the grounds of the church
with some attractions and music to mark the occasion.

Finally, a sincere thank you for all your generosity, help and support in making this venture possible,
we are very proud of this achievement on your behalf and are confident this will enhance St. Mary’s
Church and the village.

Anita’s Flowers Further Housing Development Threat In Minster
@ Greens of Minster
Villagers who use Facebook are likely to be aware of the threat of a further
24A Monkton Road 125 houses being built in the village. This is on top of the 36 already in motion
Minster along Monkton Road and the 214 which already have planning permission
on the land West of Tothill Street. This latest proposal by a land agent called
CT12 4EA Gladman Developments Ltd is set to have a planning application submitted
T: 01843 822 212 for the land north of Foxborough Lane/East of Tothill Street.
M: 07889 308 748 The site proposed by Gladman Developments is not in the current local plan
E: [email protected] but Thanet District Council have put out a call for further sites stating that
Facebook: anitas flowers at greens they need to plan for a further 4-5000 more houses and they are looking for
Minster to take a sizeable share of this number.
Free local delivery For any villagers who may think that further houses being built in the village
will not affect them I would urge you to reconsider; this development if
approved will not only affect school places, there are not even enough for the
West Tothill site and our ability to access health care via the GP surgery but
the impact to traffic on Tothill Street is going to be catastrophic. The 214
houses West of Tothill already approved is set to bring Tothill Street to a
standstill at times but further traffic in and out of the village is plainly a disaster
in the making.
This is a plea to residents in the village who have come to love and care for
our community to join myself in doing your part to strongly object when the
time comes. Not only to prevent this land and other land in the village from
being placed into the revised local plan and secondly to object to this new
development and any other large scale development applications that may
be submitted in future.
Gladman Developments are already soliciting feedback from villagers to their
proposal. Please be aware that this stands for nothing when it comes to the
formal planning process. Formal planning objections can only be made online,
by email or in written form when the developer submits their application to
TDC, and we will only have 3 short weeks to do this. To really make a
difference we need this done in numbers of people, not numbers of houses
so for every house, all adults in that house making their own objections. In
addition, when it comes to the local plan review, any land that makes it into
the revised plan is guaranteed to have planning permission agreed for
development, the only argument at that stage is how many houses; so we
must do everything we can to avoid further sites getting into the local plan.
By the time this article reaches villagers, it is likely that the local plan review
deadline will have passed (4 Feb) but there will be another opportunity later
in the year when the new sites are released via the draft update. However
anyone who wishes to do their bit must keep themselves alert for any news
as we do not know which will come first the draft reviewed local plan or the
planning application – both need a strong response from villagers if we are to
save Minster.
I have formed an action group that is intended to support villagers by raising
awareness and helping you understand when and how to object. So please if
you are not already following our Facebook page ‘Minstersfuturematters’ then
join or like that group. If you are not on Facebook, don’t worry – we will
continue to place information in Minster Matters and on notice boards but
please make yourself aware by ‘listening and looking out’ for local press
releases. If you have an email then please send me your email address and I
will keep you updated. Send to [email protected].
I would also urge residents to start talking about this when out and about and
help to share the information amongst our friends, family and neighbours.

CHRISTMAS THANKS
I would like to thank everyone who helped make Minster village such a lovely place to be for Christmas 2021.
The list of people to thank is long, and the fear of missing someone out means that I will not name names BUT
you all know who you are.
We will be arranging a meeting in March to discuss this year's Christmas events and will let you know soon on
the date and place. If anyone has any ideas for this year or would like to help then please message me and come
along to the meeting. Hopefully we will not have any covid regulations to follow by then.
Again, that you everyone

PCSO’s REPORT

Hello everyone,

A happy and healthy 2022 to you all!!

As it’s the start of a new year, I would like to take this opportunity to inform

you of a new initiative. ‘My Community Voice’ is an engagement tool that we

have started to use in our communities.

For anyone in the villages of Minster, Manston and Monkton who are already

members, they will tell you that when I’m on duty I put out alerts on topics

such as - crimes of note in your area, missing people, community news, CCTV requests and

much more.

Minster Matters have kindly printed the poster which shows you how you sign up and a little

more of what it’s about on the next page.

One thing that I must point out to you is that it is not a crime reporting tool!

I have also enrolled the help of officers to monitor speeding along Tothill Street and Monkton
Road. They have been conducting spontaneous checks over the last couple of months - results
can be read on page 20 of this issue in the Parish Council meeting summary, as the officers
very kindly came along to the Parish Council meeting to read their report - these impromptu
checks will continue indefinitely.
I have read that the church clock face restoration fund has met it’s target!! Amazing news and
well done to all. Village Voices had a tiny part to play in the fund raising and we were only too
pleased to happily sing our way to bringing in a few pennies and also very honoured to be
asked to do so.
I look forward to seeing you all or engaging with you through My Community Voice.
Stay safe,
Debbie

COMMUNITY WARDEN’S REPORT
Happy New Year Minster!!

Well, that didn’t go to plan!!!
After taking great care before Christmas, not going out, turning down a day out in
Canterbury with friends etc …. my sons then got Covid and everything planned had
to change. I know that’s nothing compared to what others have lost, I’m grateful I
was able to see them again 10 days later and we enjoyed New Year’s Eve together.
As of today, I’ve still not had Covid but I am triple jabbed and I suspect a little bit lucky, although to
quote the golfer Gary Player “the more I practice the luckier I get”, we all need to do our bit to be
lucky enough not to catch it. That’s enough about COVID!!
I’m really pleased that Minster Shed is coming on so well, Minster Shed is a community space where
people can come together and support each other and the community, they will offer woodworking
and a place to meet, incidentally it’s behind the Bell Inn, you can’t tell me that was an accident!! You
can come and talk, have a cuppa, do woodwork if you want or not, with other activities planned for
the future, when they become more established. I know they have had a great response from the
community with offers of help, tools and much more and if you’re interested, remember it’s a shed not
a men’s shed, everyone is welcome.
Get in touch with them by emailing [email protected] or call me and I’ll pass on your details.
 Thanks, and keep safe Minster
Karl

MINSTER SHED

The Minster Matters of November last year had a short article about the newly formed
Minster Shed. That article explained the initial overwhelming support the Shed had
received from Minster residents, for which all Shed members offer their thanks. That
support combined with the generosity of The Bell Inn in providing the Shed premises,
has ensured that the whole venture has got-off to a cracking start.
As explained in our previous article, initial efforts are being applied to making the Shed
building habitable such that it a viable working space. We are getting there with
restoration work going well. Our thanks go to the many who have donated wall paint
and cleaning materials. Once the cleaning and internal preservation is completed and
storage and work benches fitted, then Shed members will be casting their eye towards
community tasks and projects with which they could possibly assist, for the benefit of
all Minster residents. We will be seeking proposals in the near future.
Meanwhile, the Shed is crawling towards being a viable workshop and there are tools
and work materials still required. If you or family members are clearing-out garages or
workshops and have redundant tools or work materials – screws, nails, drill bits, hinges,
brackets etc, etc, - then we would be grateful for the option of taking them. We clearly
cannot take all that is offered but we would welcome the opportunity to build our stock.
Additionally, new members to The Shed are most welcome. The next Shed meeting
will be held at 10.00 Tuesday 15 February in the Minster Pavilion.

MINSTER TWINNING ASSOCIATION

A belated Happy New Year to everyone.
Our first quiz of the year will be on 26 February at
the RBL. This is a very popular event and as such, we
recommend early booking, as quite a few tables have
already been booked by the quizzers from the last
quiz. The cost will be £7 per person, with our
wonderful signature buffet included. Our usual
quizmaster, Ian Munday has handed over the job to
Ross Matheson. We thank both Ian, who has served
us well in the past and Ross for his support for the
future. The start as always is a prompt 8pm. We
apologise that we won’t be able to accept bookings
on the night, so ring 07745 683 466 asap to ensure
your attendance.
It has been proposed that we as an Association,
purchase and plant a tree in honour of the Queen’s
Platinum Jubilee. This would be accompanied by a
plaque to commemorate the occasion. A request has
gone to the Parish Council for permission to do this,
and for their recommendation as to an appropriate
location. It is hoped that we will be able to have
some of our French friends with us to share this
honour.
Thanks goes to Paul Willins for donating an original
t-shirt from the commencement of the Association.
This will be added to our collection of memorabilia
along with a china plate from Armbouts Cappel that
was gifted to us for safe keeping by Jan Holden.
These will be added to our souvenir display cabinet
that has pride of place in the foyer of the village hall.
If anyone else has anything from our friends that they
no longer wish to store themselves, we will be happy
to receive it. It is important to keep our history going.
Don’t just ditch these artefacts. Please contact the
Secretary on 07745 683 466 if you can help.
We thought it would be a good idea to collect a box
of children’s books and offer it to the library in
Armbouts Cappel to help their minors with the early
learning of English. Their library agreed with this
idea, but at present we are unable to gift it to them
for obvious travel restrictions. Armbouts Cappel
have reciprocated and collected a box of young
children’s books, however Minster Library are unable
to accept them at present. We hope that it may be
possible in the future.
Have a safe and healthy 2022
