Prompt Corner

Roger Hobcraft
1939 - 2021

It is with great sadness that Minster Playhouse has learned of the
death of Roger Hobcraft on Thursday the 15th of April 2021.
A member of the Playhouse for over thirty five years, Roger’s first

appearance on the Minster stage was as a wacky Professor in shorts

and a pith helmet in “The Owl and the Pussycat”, but it was as the
pantomime Dame that Roger really found his niche. Many people
will have fond memories of him launching into song in his own unique

style whilst looking utterly resplendent in high heels and an

enormous frock. On and off stage Roger brought a lot of joy to many
people.
Roger compered our “Revue Nights” with panache and was also the

Playhouse photographer, being responsible for all of our excellent

publicity photos for as long as anyone can remember. In addition to
that Roger was a stalwart of the
committee, undertaking the role of

Playhouse Treasurer for many years.

Outside the Playhouse, Roger was a
keen and skilled sportsman, and widely
liked and respected among the local

farming community. A beautiful and

moving memorial service was held for
him at St. Nicholas church on Friday 14th
May before his funeral at Thanet

Crematorium.

Roger was truly a gentleman of the
Playhouse in every sense, and it is as a
great gentleman and true friend that he

is most fondly remembered by all of us.

PCSO’s REPORT

Hello all,
I am settling into my new role and have so many of you to thank for making

me feel so welcome. I am absolutely loving the village and have been completely

overwhelmed by the community spirit that it has. I have had some queries regarding

the dissemination of my phone number. To clear up this matter my Inspector has

written the following explanation:-

After some general queries regarding the dissemination of staff phone numbers I would
like to address this issue and provide some guidance and background.

Staff mobile telephone numbers are not given out to the general public. This is
particularly prevalent in officers within roles or posts where there is a revolving workforce.

Within the Community Safety Unit there are a large number of staff, who have recently
been involved in a restructure and have been embedded into differing roles.

Officers moving into roles where previous Officers have provided numbers to the
general public are now suffering as there is an expectation that the telephone calls, crimes
being reported, intelligence provided is all taken forward by the Officers taking these calls.
This has a knock on effect and officers are not able to provide a first class service to either
their previous Ward or their new roles as they are trying to juggle the two.

In order to continue to promote the correct reporting methods; Online, 101 or 999 if
there is an emergency occurring at the time, District PCSO’s are refraining from providing
mobile telephone numbers. I would hate to have a member of the public in need of help,
leave a message or try to call an Officer who are either off duty, on holiday or have been
moved within the Organisation, that we then cannot provide a service as we are unaware
of the issue.

There may be times where there are exceptional circumstances and a number is
provided, however this will be on a case by case basis.

Continuing my report, there is another matter which I need to address.  Scams are prevalent
at the moment and the following are two text messages which I myself have received in the past
few weeks…

I need to strongly advise that you do not reply to these messages and DO NOT DISCLOSE
ANY PERSONAL DETAILS. These  can  include,  your  name,  date  of  birth,  address  and  bank
details.

On a brighter note, Village Voices met for the first time outside and in accordance with all
government guidelines on Wednesday. We had a fabulous time and the rain which was determined
to fall did not deter us. We are all extremely excited and looking forward to when indoor rehearsals
and the whole group can sing all together again. Fingers crossed.
Thank you

Sophie’s quest for her gold nearly met a stumbling Zoe and Adrian Davies with Karen Whybrow
block on her last challenge, the expedition.
Ordinarily the scout and a couple of others would
go for a two day camp where they had to plan
the entire event from location, equipment, first
aid, cooking and navigating a hike. However, this
challenge fell at the same time as a national
lockdown and with only months left to achieve
her dream of gold Sophie’s hard work was in
jeopardy. Following consultation, it was agreed
that she could do the exact same challenge,
except by herself, in her back garden and
navigating a socially distanced hike with one
friend. Although this was not the end to her
badge that she had envisaged it is the perfect
example of her persistence in the face of adversity.
1st Minster Scout Leader Karen Whybrow says
“We are all extremely proud of Sophie for
achieving her Chief Scouts Gold Award and hope
that she continues to enjoy her scouting journey
through Explorers.”

Secondly: after three years Zoe and Adrian Davies,
two of the parent helpers, were invested as Assistant
Scout Leaders. They both started helping out at the
group when their son attended but when he became
too old to continue, they made the decision to stay
and encourage other young people to enjoy it as much
as he had.

New Little Library in Minster

You will find this little library
in the front garden of 19 Cheney Rd
Keen reader and library owner Kate says; I have a seen
a few of these around Thanet and thought it would be
great to have one in Minster. I reached out to two of the
Minster Facebook pages to ask for anyone that would
be able to supply the materials and build it free of
charge. Shaun Newstead who lives in Minster and runs
his own business called ‘E.K. Handyman’ offered. It was
installed a week or so ago and I have had a massive
positive response from the village on the Facebook
pages. I am happy to store any donations of books.
