MINSTER

CHURCH

CLOCK

Total raised to date £13,103.66 !!!!

Amazingly we are nearly there. In less than six months can you believe
it? Just one final push is needed to reach the target.
Because of the remarkable generosity of the people who have taken the
Clock Face Restoration to their hearts and dare we say it, their wallets
and purses we are now able to move on practically.
A firm estimate for the removal, restoration, and reinstalment from the
acclaimed experts in this work, Smiths of Derby, who have examined the
face, has been accepted. They are the company who annually service
the clock mechanism.
In addition, we have had a very generous offer for the required
scaffolding needed to remove the clock face and replace it; its weight
and fastenings will require this method. So now we await the paperwork
from the Canterbury Diocese, which should be forthcoming soon. As
soon as this is received Smiths will give us a start date.
Arrangements will be made to record the various stages of the process
so it can be shared with all.
All this process has been possible because of the massive support
received, the many donations from individuals, groups and local
businesses, the Church Concert, support from Karen’s yard sales, the
collections around the village and the raffle.
The raffle was drawn at The Bell Inn on Friday 20th November and the
winners have been notified.
Sincere thanks to you all!
Have a Very Merry Christmas and enjoy the Minster Christmas Event.

We will give you all an update in the New Year.

CHRISTMAS ELVES AND LIGHTS
First, I need to thank everyone who has knitted Elves. They are all sizes, all shapes and all colours.
They are all individuals AND every one is wonderful.
If anyone would like to help stitch them to the lampposts then join me from 12 noon on Saturday
27th November. I will be starting at the Church and heading up the High Street. Please bring a wool
sewing needle, coloured wool and scissors.

Also, on the 27th from 10 am I am hoping to put some lights up in the High Street car park.
I need volunteers with ladders and people who don't mind climbing them. If you are free
and able to help then please let me know. Also, if you have any spare baubles to hang in
the trees, please bring them along.

FATHER CHRISTMAS
We have had word today that Minster children have been put on the nice list by Father
Christmas BUT to check his facts, he is making several visits to Minster this December. Make
sure you keep up to date with all his visit dates and times by checking Minster Christmas Facebook
page.
Father Christmas will be touring our village in December. Look out for him and his Elves as they
will be collecting for the restoration of the Church Clock Face.
Sunday 5th December between 4 pm and 7 pm he will be touring Heronsbrook estate, St. Mildred’s
Road and the roads around the School.
Sunday 12th December between 4 pm and 7 pm he will be around the Hill House Road area.
Sunday 19th December between 4 pm and 7 pm he will be touring around the bottom of the village.
I hope you all give Father Christmas a wave as he goes through the village on his sleigh.
Whilst Father Christmas is in the Village Hall on Saturday 11th December between 4 pm and 7 pm
meeting all the children, his sleigh will be outside. Please feel free to take photos of your children
with the sleigh.

5th November – That Was Brilliant!!
Walking to the Rec we looked up to the sky, just one star could be seen.
Entering the Rec, torches were glowing and glow-sticks in wonderful colour lit up the area.
Suddenly all the colour was in the sky, the firework display had started and what a display!
Oohs and Aahs could be heard, the display was superb.
A BIG THANK YOU to those who spent time organising the display and setting all the fireworks
alight, which they probably enjoyed.
This is village life and I love it.

PCSO’s REPORT
Hello everyone,
I hope that this edition of Minster Matters finds you all well.
As the Christmas season is fast approaching I have decided to give you a few tips on how to
help keep your home and belongings safe. The Christmas period traditionally sees a sharp
increase in domestic burglary, with opportunistic thieves targeting homes they see to be
vulnerable.
While you’re out and about:-
Be careful not to be distracted when carrying lots of bags as this makes you an easy target for
pickpockets. Ensure your handbag and wallet are secure and keep mobile phones out of sight.
Avoid carrying too much cash or leaving belongings in your car.
At home:-
Although we love showing off our Christmas trees and all of our pretty decorations, this can also act as a beacon
of light to thieves. Close your curtains and blinds or partially restrict views disclosing desirable items in your home
such as TV’s, laptops etc.
If you go out in the evening leave some lights on but NOT YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE LIGHTS as these are a frequent
cause of fires.
If you’re going on holiday put a timer on your lights and don’t forget to cancel your paper.
When your festivities are over, take care as to how you dispose of empty boxes and Christmas rubbish as your
recycling can be a clear advertisement of what new equipment you may have which might be worth breaking in for!
Please remember that delivery drivers will not ask to enter your home and charity collectors will not be offended if
asked to show their ID.
Stay safe and have fun.
NB – Village Voices choir have quite a few dates booked over the festive period so please come along and support.
We will be at the Lychgate at 5pm on 11th as part of the Minster Christmas event and we have decided to sing
some Christmas songs and carols on the 15th outside Jemima’s at 7pm just for the fun of it and to get you all in the
Christmas spirit.
Have a very Happy Christmas
My best wishes to you all

COMMUNITY WARDEN’S REPORT
Hello Minster
Well by the time you read this its Christmas or possibly New Year depending how desperate
you became to entertain yourself, now that you’ve drunk all the Christmas drink in the house
and finally had the last of the turkey and twiglets and for those of you reading this before the
above …thanks.
Let’s be honest for many of us it’s been a tough year, a year that has been made better by the
community that is Minster, in many ways the people of Minster have come together to look
after each other during the past year with the help of the Parish Council, Surgery, Pharmacist, Salvation Army, local
shops, businesses and organisations and of course you the residents and neighbours. Between you all you’ve spotted
rogue traders, found missing dogs, highlighted vulnerable people, reported fly tipping, looked after the marshes,
spotted hazards on our roads, given to food banks, volunteered at events, cared for the community and of course
the hundreds of hidden little kindnesses and good deeds that go unnoticed, but make such a difference to those
who receive them.
So, thank you to all that have helped myself and the community during the past year, without your help and
information we wouldn’t necessarily know who and what needs help, so keep calling and talking, it does make a
difference.
I’m looking forward to next year, I’m sure it will bring its own challenges but as a community we can make it just bit
less challenging.
I wish you all a good Christmas and New Year however you celebrate them.
Karl

Technology Resilience voucher scheme to aid economic recovery

Kent County Council is launching a new voucher scheme to enable local businesses to put
a new digital or technology solution in place to help with future growth.

The Technology Resilience Voucher Scheme is part of the C-Care (Covid Channel Area
Response Exchange) project which is funded by the EU Interreg France (Channel) England
programme.

C-Care represents a total of 6.7million Euro package of covid-recovery support from the
European Regional Development Fund. The overall project aims to support businesses and
individuals at risk of exclusion on both sides of the Channel. In Kent the focus on business
support and this new scheme is the first to launch as a way to help businesses bounce back
and become more resilient.

Successful applicant businesses will be able to redeem a voucher worth up to £1000 for
services in the following areas:

 Web-based activities.
 Remote working technologies.
 Software solutions & Apps.
 Digital marketing & promotional activities.
 Digital skills & capacity building.
Equipment & small Investments to facilitate digital activity.

Services will be provided to Kent businesses by a framework of approved digital service
providers which is also benefiting a number of digital and creative firms across the county.

Derek Murphy, KCC’s Cabinet Member for Economic Development, said: “During the
pandemic, businesses realised the importance of making the best use digital technology to
connect to customers and deliver services in new ways. This new voucher scheme will help
local firms to adopt these solutions to help with new ways of working and future growth.”

KCC has also commissioned a number of specialist digital business advisors who will also
be available to support Kent businesses interested in applying for a voucher. These
advisors will offer expert advice, guidance and recommendations to Kent-based businesses
to help them in targeting activity within their application form to ensure that the vouchers
have the maximum impact for the successful applicant SMEs and for the wider Kent
economy.

The scheme is targeted at Kent businesses which have been impacted by the pandemic
and which can demonstrate how adopting new digital solutions will help them recover and
grow.

Applications from business in sectors such as leisure, food & drink, manufacturing would be
particularly welcome.

The voucher scheme will launch on 22 November and will run for up to nine months or until
the voucher budget has been fully allocated. Certain eligibility criteria apply, and companies
can obtain more information by visiting https://www.kent.gov.uk/business/business-loans-
and-funding/technology-resilience-vouchers where they can apply and request an initial
consultation with a digital advisor.

Pantomime December 2021

CANCELLATION

It is with great sadness that I have to tell you that,
due to an outbreak of Covid among the cast of the
pantomime, we have been forced to cancel this
show. It is the second time that we have been
unable to put on a pantomime due to Covid.
Although mercifully few of the cast are seriously
unwell, they are having to self-isolate during the
last two important weeks of rehearsal, and further
members might be forced to self-isolate
immediately before or during the run.
A decision has yet to be made as to whether this
show will be postponed, and if so, to when, or
withdrawn, and we will let you know as soon as we
can. In the meanwhile, we are notifying all who
have booked, and processing refunds.

We apologise sincerely for the
disappointment that this will cause.

MINSTER ARMBOUTS CAPPEL TWINNING ASSOCIATION

First and foremost, we would like to wish you all a very happy Christmas and a healthy New
Year.

Our AGM was held on 12 November. Sadly, Roy and Pat Burden are leaving us due to hefty
commitments outside of the Twinning. They were thanked for all the help they had provided over the
last few years and were wished all the best in the future. However, we’re happy to report that two new
members have joined the committee, Peter Mogridge (not to be mistaken for Peter Mockeridge) and
Dagmar Voss. Peter is a French speaker, having been in Minster since April and is looking forward to
being involved. Dagmar was born in Munich, but her travels have taken her to many countries, including
living in France for a few years. Welcome to you both.

The first of our quizzes since the beginning of the pandemic was in October and was a huge success
as always with 100 quizzers. Roy Burden was thanked for stepping in as quizmaster in Ian Munday’s
absence. All the staff were thanked for making it a fun evening and one not to have been missed. Having
said that, the next quiz will be on 26 February and there have already been requests to book tables. Don’t
leave it too late to book yours.

Unfortunately, this is the second year that we have been unable to attend the Remembrance Day
Service in France on 11 November, but the many texts and emails between us show that we were sadly
missed. Likewise, the non-presence of the French committee at our ceremony on 14 November was
evident. We purchased 2 wreaths for laying at the memorial in the cemetery and as you can see by the
pictures, one had the addition of blue cornflowers, the French equivalent of our poppy. This was laid on
their behalf, in their absence, something they were appreciative of. They hope to be able to resume
exchange visits in 2022.

Some members of our committee are trying to organize a visit to France in January to hold a joint
meeting and discuss future events.

Once again, we wish you all a
Wonderful Christmas and a very Happy New Year

DID YOU KNOW?
SOUTHEASTERN RAIL offer a FREE PASSENGER ASSIST SERVICE.
This is a service you request prior to travelling.
Before you start your journey, you arrive at the station at least fifteen to twenty
minutes in advance of your trains departure. You will be greeted by a member
of the rail staff. Even at non-manned stations there will be someone to assist
you. They are there to provide what you have requested.
When you get to your final destination, operators will assist you off the train,
and off the platform. I found it excellent.
I arrived at Minster Station to be greeted by an operator. He even had a
wheelchair in case I needed one. He checked where I was travelling to and
about the return journey. As I needed to change trains at Ashford he phoned
to see if l would need to change platforms. He assisted me on to the train.
Immediately he contacted Ashford again advising the carriage and where I
was seated and which train I needed to be on for the next leg of the journey.
Where the train stopped the operator was waiting for me, offered to help me
off, saw me to a seat to await the connection. Saw me onto the train. and
phoned St. Pancras station re my position on the train and that a wheelchair
would be required.
At St.Pancras the operator was by the door when the train stopped. As I needed
to use the Underground service, due to the distance involved, I was wheeled
through the complex. Before I was allowed to stand this member of staff asked
the TFL staff if the lifts were working and if assistance was available to the
correct platform and underground train.
The return service also worked smoothly. Wheelchair from TFL to Station,
Staff, wheeled me to the train, I was shown to a seat, greeted at Ashford,
helped to a seat on connecting train, guard checked where I was as the train
left Ashford, prior to arriving at Minster the guard came ready to see I exited
the train safely and someone was there to get me home.
This is absolutely ideal for us aged, anyone with a disability, or nervous
travelling alone. Congratulations to Southeastern rail and all the staff I met.
They were excellent and you can't get better than excellent.

At the heart of Christmas
I wonder when you start getting out the Christmas decorations, and do
you have special memories or thoughts as you do so? I always take special
care taking out of their boxes our collection of crib scenes. Always
carefully wrapped up in January, each scene comes to life as I gently
place them round the house. At their simplest, a crib scene will just have
Mary, looking lovingly at her new baby and Joseph somehow casting a
watchful eye over both. However, like many, we only place the baby
Jesus in the scene on Christmas Day itself. Here at the heart of all that is
going on around is the true message of Christmas. God who is born in
human flesh to come and live among us. At the heart of Christmas is a
simple family who are journeying to find a place to stay; a family who
then become refugees finding sanctuary in another country. At the heart
of Christmas is a simple message of love – God’s love for the whole of
humanity. God’s love which sings through the birth of Jesus, in the words
a TV campaign this year, ‘love never ends’.
Christmas 2021 will be different in many ways – we are not harnessed
by severe Covid restrictions like last year – yet for many there may be
an empty place around the table. However, amongst the celebrations and
joys, tears and sometime loneliness, let’s remember what is at the heart
of Christmas… a true gift from God and a love that never ends.
As always, you are welcome to explore the Christmas message by
attending one of the services at St Mary’s Church, Salvation Army or the
Abbey. But wherever you are this Christmas, or whatever you are doing,
take a moment to pause, look around and wonder, what it is for you that
is at the heart of Christmas…
With peace and blessings
