NOVEMBER 2023

On Sunday 12th November we come together to remember the Service Men and Women who sadly lost their lives in service for their country. Minster and Monkton Royal British Legion begin the day, each year, with a parade led by the Viper Corps of Drums and the Royal British Legion Standard, followed by members of the Club Committees, representatives of Minster Parish Council, Veterans, Community Groups and Associations. Anyone wishing to take part will be more than welcome. Leaving the Royal British Legion Club in Augustine Road at 10am, the parade works its way down through the village towards the church in readiness for the service at 10.45am, where a two minute silence will be observed at 11am. The service is the perfect opportunity to pay our respects and remember the fallen. At the end of the service village groups are invited to lay wreaths and crosses at the war memorial in the church. There will be a short dedication service as the Minster & Monkton Royal British Legion Standard receives its 100th year pennant. A further service will then take place at the war memorial in Minster Cemetery at the top of Tothill Street, where there are 85 identified war graves from both WW1 and WW2, this service will take place at 12.15pm. Everyone is welcome to return to the Royal British Legion where tea, coffee and of course alcoholic beverages will be available. A buffet will be available all afternoon and there will be live music from 2pm with ‘Cockney Nights’. We look forward to seeing you all. **** “We Will Remember Them” If you would like to purchase a wreath or posies please contact your Poppy Appeal Coordinator Annette 07934 635 380 or Leanne 07784 485 494 6 Minster Matters NOVEMBER 2023 Minster and Monkton Royal British Legion Club Annual General Meeting will be held on Monday 20th November at 7.30pm All members are urged to attend

I am for now still your warden so please contact myself if I can be of help. We also no longer have a dedicated P.C.S.O for Minster so I would urge you to contact Kent Police via the 101 phone number, you can also use the Kent Police website and always in an emergency ring 999. I know this is a far from perfect situation but if crime or an incident is not reported it in effect ‘never happened’ and unfortunately I do not have any better access to Kent Police than you do. I hope you all have a fun and safe Guy Fawkes night, I’d encourage you to attend public displays like the one organised by our super Parish Council, so much safer than home events, but if you do have a home event follow the firework code, keep pets safe and please check for wildlife before lighting bonfires Keep safe Minster, Karl NOVEMBER 2023 Minster Matters 17

Minster Shed Report Christmas will be upon soon and we at the Shed have arranged our Christmas Dinner and booked a space at the Christmas Bazaar in the Village Hall. We have virtually finished our metal work Shed which is now fully operational and will compliment our woodwork Shed. Training has now started so that we will be competent in using the machinery. The Village Act of Remembrance at the Parish Church of St. Mary’s beginning at 10.45am [A second Act of Remembrance at the Memorial in the Cemetery will take place at 12.15pm] Once again, the Royal British Legion, Salvation Army and St. Mary’s Church will be joining together to offer the community an opportunity to honour and remember all who have given their lives in the service of the country. We shall also call to mind all who are currently serving, and light a candle for peace. If anyone would like to make a personal Act of Remembrance to remember loved ones who died during conflict, please make use of the Prayer Tree in the church. In the run up to All Souls’ (2ⁿd November), names have been added, and they will all remain until after Remembrance Sunday. If you have any questions regarding the Remembrance Sunday service, or the opportunity to write names for the Prayer Tree, please contact me on 01843 822 428 or [email protected] Sally Willins: Licensed Lay Minister The Parish Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Minster THE BENEFICE IS CURRENTLY IN A VACANCY PERIOD PLEASE USE THE CONTACT DETAILS GIVEN BELOW TO MAKE ANY ENQUIRIES ~ Thank you Online Contact: [email protected] www.wantsumchurches.org To make any general enquiries, or to arrange a Baptism, Wedding or Funeral, please contact the Administrator: Sheila Greenstreet, using the email address above, or telephone 07788 791 468 Licensed Reader: Mrs Sally Willins 01843 822 428 07790 276 864 [email protected] [If you wish to talk to someone, need support or would welcome prayer please contact Sally Willins] Churchwarden: Mrs Sue Hergest 01843 823 347 Retired Priest: Canon Peter Gausden 01843 825 374 22 Minster Matters NOVEMBER 2023
