Minster Show 2022 Serving freshly made waffles,
homemade cakes and light lunches
Plans are underway for this year's Show. You can
expect the usual aspects - Parade down through
the Village, the Show marquee with
demonstrations and workshops of crafts, races,
egg throwing, music, the Scouts burgers and
events in the small arena. There will also be a
Ceilidh (pronounced kay-lee) - Irish version of a
barn dance in the evening. This will be ticket only

to buy these in future issues of this magazine.

One of the important members of the Committee is
the President which is an honorary position. For
many years you will have seen Janet Walmsley
named in the schedule. Janet has made the
decision to resign this position this year. The
committee have accepted her request and would
like to publicly thank her for all her hard work and
encouragement over the years. Following this the
committee have asked Danny Day to be our new
President, in recognition of the many years that he
had given to organising and supporting the Show.
In addition to Danny becoming our new President,
we are also delighted to have Ray Owen as a
Vice-President. Ray has previously served on the
committee, and continues to actively support the
Show with the production of the Schedule and on
the day.

The Schedule, with more details of the classes of
competition in the Show Marquee, will be out in
May, look for it in local businesses from around the
beginning of the month.

Retirement – not always a joy

The problem of boredom and or loneliness after retirement
from work is well-known.
After many years immersed in their work some men can feel cast
adrift when their presence is no longer required on a daily basis.
This sudden (and not always welcome) change can be highly
disorientating and lead to depression, which in turn creates
greater isolation.
In an attempt to help such people, a movement was started in
Australia to provide a drop-in meeting point for such men, based
around the idea that there ought to be some constructive point
to these meetings if boredom was to be relieved.
It was observed that men, whose career had involved no
physical creation but rather mental work, often had a desire to
create something with their hands that would have an end-
product, something physical, that would last.
The result was the Shed projects which have spread around the
world and continue to show great success.
The idea of the shed, or man-cave, is entrenched in our
consciousness, and the principal of the Shed project was to
provide a suitable meeting place away from the home, where
men might gather for conversation and, if they wished, to learn
the skills needed to create and build things, with the individual
choosing whether to follow his own project or to join in a
community-based effort.
So, a typical Shed usually has an array of workbenches, tools, and
people to advise and assist if needed, and also an area where tea
and coffee can be prepared with seating for rest and chat.
A Shed project was started some years ago in Broadstairs and
has grown to occupy a large building with excellent facilities and
one hundred and fifty members. Some Minster people wanted
to create the same here, but for years were thwarted by the
apparent impossibility of finding a suitable and affordable venue.
Recently, one of the leading lights of the movement called a
meeting of interested parties, and during discussion, a venue
was suggested that has led over several months to the creation
of an excellent, well-appointed Shed, which opened two weeks
ago.
The prime intention is to have a safe, friendly environment for people to explore new interests. If you feel that you might like to join
us, please come along. The Shed is behind the Bell Inn, at the left of the yard entered from the gateway in St Mildred’s Road
opposite the Corner House and is open on a Tuesday and Thursday morning from 10 am.
If you would like to learn a new skill, or have wood-or metal-working skills that you would be happy to teach, please get in touch.

COMMUNITY WARDEN’S REPORT
Dear Minster
Things are going up in price in the shops, fuel prices have rocketed, it’s a struggle
for a lot of people myself included.
I would really like to encourage people who are struggling to check that they are
getting all the discounts and help they may be entitled to and of course benefits.
For instance, if you live alone you can claim discount from your council tax and also your water
bills from Southern Water, also remember if you don’t pay by you council tax by direct debit you
will need to claim the Government’s £150 council tax rebate, you should be contacted by the
council and invited to make a claim for this. If you do pay by direct debit it will be automatically
paid into your account, but be careful as scammers are already targeting this crisis …..Don’t give
out bank details!!
I’ve had a look myself and there are many sites online offering advice and pointing to savings
that can be made, Martin Lewis at moneysavingexpert.com is a good start, however if you haven’t
got access to a computer you can use the public computers at the village library for free, then of
course Citizen’s Advice at citizensadvice.org.uk is always helpful and please remember I’m also
available to chat if you need to talk, my number is 07811 271 299.
