ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY
A Zero Tolerance Policy exists throughout the NHS and naturally
Minster Surgery adheres to that policy. Your Surgery is working hard
to meet the needs of all our patients within a very
stretched NHS service and would ask that they are treated with the
respect they rightly deserve. Sadly, we have recently experienced
several instances of foul and abusive language used against surgery
staff, both over the phone and face to face, which will NOT be
tolerated. Therefore, a simple plea, please treat us in the way you
would expect to be treated yourself. Thank you for your understanding.

MINSTER SURGERY WINS NATIONAL GOLD AWARD

Minster surgery has been recognised with a national award
after implementing a new personalised and proactive way
of caring for its patients nearing the end of their lives.
Claire Dennis, the Practice Frailty Nurse, and Sandra
Houghton, the Assistant Practice Manager, were
presented with the “Gold Standards Framework (GSF)
Quality Hallmark Award” at a ceremony in London by the
Secretary of the Royal College of General Practitioners,
who stated that it was fabulous to find such a pioneering
GP Practice.
Claire, who led the push to provide coordinated and
compassionate care for all such patients, said the new
procedures benefit patients and staff alike. Patients who
are on the palliative list, “Gold Patients”, are given a “Gold Card” and, on contacting the surgery, are immediately
fast tracked to the most appropriate person.
The “Gold Card” was designed and produced by the Patient Liaison Group at the surgery. Claire added “The GSF
has brought everyone together as a team and we’re delighted to receive this award as it is an area that we are
really passionate about".
To illustrate the scale of this achievement, Minster Surgery is currently the only GP Practice in Kent and Medway
NHS and South East of England to have achieved this award.

Your Letters…

Review… Along with many others I went to the Art Show in Minster Village Hall
and thoroughly enjoyed it.
I would be interested to know how many pictures were sold this year?
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder of course, but I heard it voiced that some of
the nicest paintings were in the ‘wrong’ frames, an opinion I shared.

Kate’s Puddings – what’s cooking?

I know you are meant to make a good Christmas pudding months in
advance, but this was made in sheer desperation in mid December, and
was still amazing! The recipe is from “Delicious” Magazine. It suggests
you save the cooking liquid from the mandarin and use it as a sweet base
for mulled wine or cocktails.  I turned mine into orange sherbet - I chucked
it into the ice cream maker, adding the juice and some pulp of a large
orange, 1/4 pint of commercial juice and 1 egg white.

Mandarin in the Middle Christmas Pudding
Fruit – put all of these ingredients into a large
bowl, mix well and cover for 24hrs.
5oz/140g each raisins, sultanas, currants, half
glacé cherries
2oz/50g blanched almonds
1 medium Bramley apple, peeled, cored and
grated to give 175g/6oz flesh
2fl oz/50g orange liqueur – eg Cointreau plus
Zest and juice of 1 orange

Centre:
1 firm mandarin or large seedless clementine (about 140g/5oz)
14oz/400g white granulated sugar (to keep the colour)
2 tbsp orange liqueur

Pudding:
5oz/140g cold butter,
6oz/175g dark muscovado sugar, plus a little extra for coating the
bowl
6oz/175g fresh white breadcrumbs
5oz/140g self raising flour with a pinch of salt
1 heaped tsp ground mixed spice
2 large eggs, beaten

Put the mandarin into a small pan, cover with cold water (you can’t
quite – it floats), then put a piece of scrunched up parchment on
and the pan lid. Bring to a boil and cook for 30 minutes, or until
tender when stabbed with a skewer. Remove the mandarin,
measure 300g of the water into a jug, discard the rest. Pour the
300g water into the pan, add the white sugar, heating gently. Stab
the mandarin a few more times, put it into the syrup, plus the liqueur.
Re-cover with the parchment, simmer for 45 minutes, turn it upside
down half way. Allow to cool in the syrup.
Grease a 1.5 litre pudding basin. In a large bowl, combine all the
dry ingredients, grate in the butter, adding the fruit and eggs. Mix
well. Put about 1/3 of the mix into the bowl, squish the mandarin
into it (gently). Put more mixture around and over the mandarin
until the bowl is full. Make a hat for the bowl with a layer of
buttered parchment and a layer of foil, with a pleat in the middle of
both to allow the pudding to expand. Tie with string around the
bowl, making a string handle (good for handling a hot slippery
bowl!). Tuck the foil round and over the parchment.
In a large pan, sit the pudding on a jam jar top, pouring in boiling
water to half way up the side of the pudding. Cover and steam for
6 hours, topping the water up occasionally (this is important!).
Leave the pudding to mature in a cool, dark place.
To serve, steam it in a pan for an hour, or remove the foil and
parchment, cover the top with cling film and microwave on medium
for 10 minutes. Turn the pudding out onto a warmed dish. Cut
the pudding using a serrated knife so you don’t drag the mandarin
out of place.

Thanet Over Fifties Forum hosted its latest meeting on
Wednesday 25th September at Margate Baptist Church. The
topic was “A Crisis in Social Care” and Dot Gibson, Deputy
General Secretary for the National Pensioners Convention, was
keynote speaker.
Dot gave a fascinating insight into the history of post-war
social care and how the system has deteriorated over the
years. This year, the King’s Fund, an independent charity
working to improve health and care in England, said that “the
. . . system is not fit for purpose and is failing the people who
rely on it”. Over the past 20 years, there have been over 30
commissions who have all reported the same findings, but
their recommendations have so far been ignored by
government.
NPC believe that, the same as health care, social care should be free at the point of delivery and the costs shared
by society through taxation. Currently 40,000 people are losing their family homes every year to pay for social
care and there is no cap on how much they pay towards the cost out of the proceeds from their homes.
NPC are calling for the people of East Kent to join them so that they can strengthen their campaigns to improve
the lives of pensioners, e.g. through social care or accessible transport. For more information visit the NPC website
at www.npcuk.org/join-us-and-get-involved, telephone 020 7837 6622 or email [email protected]
The next TOFFs public meeting is on Fri 15th November 2019 from 10.30am to 12.30pm at Queens Road Baptist
Church, Broadstairs, CT10 1NU. It will be a question & answer session with Sir Roger Gale, MP for North Thanet
and Craig Mackinlay, MP for South Thanet.
You can find out more about TOFFs and how you can join for free by calling 01843 609337, emailing

Minster Art & Craft Group

We meet at the Old Schools every Monday morning from 9.00am to 12.30pm.
We are a friendly and sociable non-teaching group ranging from artists to all types of crafters, all of whom are ready to

give help and advice if requested. The charge per week is £2.00 to cover the hall etc and includes refreshments.
You are welcome to come along for a free morning session to see what we are doing.
