MINSTER TWINNING ASSOCIATION PRIVATE PROFESSIONAL CARER
This has been a very busy time for the Association, with planning
for the arrival of our French friends on 4 June. As mentioned 07795 691 412
before, they were unable to join us for the Party in the Park on 3
June, so we decided to go as a Twinning group and went all out to PRIVATE PROFESSIONAL CARER
decorate the table to suit the occasion and dress in the traditional
red white and blue, even receiving the presence of “Queen Kate”.
We were surprised to hear that we had won the prize for the best
dressed group. We thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon, so thanks
go to the event organisers who also arranged for beautiful weather!!
The planting of the English Oak Tree in the Rec was carried out
once the French arrived in style on 4 June. They were dressed in
union flag attire as they ran across the field to join us, carrying a
large union flag. Penny Gimes, the chair of MPC was there to
officiate and help Jean Paul Dumotier complete the planting. We
hope this tree grows as healthily as our Association does! A
programme was planned for the rest of the day which culminated
in a wonderful meal at the Minster Meze Grill. After a good rest
at the Holiday Inn, another busy day was enjoyed, prior to their
return on Sunday afternoon.
The quiz on 30 July at the RBL is now filling up, so please contact
Carol on 07745 683 466 if you would like to join in. Tickets are
£7 per person which include a fabulous buffet.
The committee members were invited to Armbouts Cappel on 25
and 26 June for their ‘Ducasse’. (Musical entertainment) We look
forward to participating in their organised plans for us over this
weekend. We hope that next year’s celebrations, (the 25th
Anniversary of the Twinning Association) will give us the
opportunity of taking a coach of 50 or so to celebrate with them
if they can accommodate us all.
We would like to take a special moment to thank David Otteson,
Manager of the Holiday Inn, for all the support he has given us for
the last 8 years and continues to give us, so to show our
appreciation, we presented him with a hamper of cheeses and
wines. Thank you David.
On Friday 10 June, Mr McCarthy from Minster Primary School,
invited the Chairman to the School Assembly to present the French
books that we had collected from Armbouts Cappel. Two young
representatives introduced themselves, in French of course, and
received the Presentation certificate. Hopefully the books will aid
in furthering their knowledge of the French language.
All photos are on our Facebook Page : Minster Armbouts-Cappel
Twinning Association.
A selection of the photos are shown on the front cover.
If you would like to join our team of supporters and helpers, please

Restoration of Minster Church Clock Face

Invitation to the unveiling of the newly restored Clock Face of

St. Mary’s Church Minster.

The “NEW” clock face for St. Mary’s Church Minster is fast approaching completion and you are
warmly invited to the unveiling ceremony on Saturday 16th of July.

This will be held at the Church commencing at 11.30 am.
The clock face will be unveiled by a special guest at 12 noon.

The Birchington Silver Band will be playing some music and light refreshments will be provided
at The Bell Inn opposite, after the unveiling.

Please come along and see the results of the kind and generous contributions the people of
Minster and beyond have made possible.

This project was conceived as an idea when John and Alan were removing the band of poppies
around the top of the church after an Armistice Day and with the help of Derek and your support
it has now come to fruition in just over a year.

The three individuals, John Quittenden, Derek Crow-Brown, and Alan Gimes are extremely
grateful for all the kind and generous contributions and support they have received to make this
day a reality.

Please come along and celebrate this momentous occasion.

From this!! To this!!

Come
along and see

the result!!

the public each Saturday morning for tours. It is a great opportunity for the people of the village to discover the
history of the Abbey.

St Domneva, the first Abbess of Minster Abbey, is often shown holding her staff and looking fondly at her pet hind.
History tells us that her two brothers, Ethelred and Ethelbert, had been murdered. And legend tells us that she was
offered wergild, or blood money, in compensation: she asked for as much land as her hind could run around within
one day. So, in the year 670, Domneva founded Minster Abbey on the lands encompassed by the white hind you
see on the sign-post as you enter the village of Minster.

The early community would have offered hospitality to pilgrims and other travellers and likely had a hospice for the
sick. A village grew up around the monastery and Minster gradually developed into a port and toll-station for the
shipping route to London. Different charters of this time show that the monastery built and owned ships, to convey
grain from the fertile land to the London corn markets.

Domneva’s daughter, St Mildred became the second Abbess of Minster Abbey in 690, and today’s monastery carries
her name which means “peaceful counsel”. She led her community with wisdom and love for more than 30 years.

She was renowned during her lifetime as a peacemaker
and was especially close to the poor. When she died
around 725, these qualities led to her being canonised as
a saint and she was venerated throughout Europe and
people started coming in pilgrimage to her tomb. Miracles
of healing were reported. Her popularity as a saint led to
her relics being taken triumphantly to St Augustine’s
Abbey, Canterbury in 1030.

The third Abbess of Minster, Saint Edburga, saw a time of
great expansion to the monastery which had been situated
near St. Mary the Virgin church. She oversaw the move to
the present site of Minster Abbey and the building of
cloisters and the monastic living areas. These buildings of
wattle and wood have disappeared, but the foundations
of the monastic church, built of stone, lie beneath our
lawns and were uncovered by an archaeological dig in the
1920s

Mr and Mrs Charles Senior at Minster Abbey At the dissolution of the monasteries in 1538,
Minster Abbey fell to the Crown. Later, it became
a private dwelling. In the 1920s Mr and Mrs Senior
gave permission for an archaeological dig at Minster
Abbey. Shortly after, in 1937, the Abbey was
purchased by the Sisters of St Walburga’s in Bavaria.
On the 25th of March 1937, after nearly 400 years,
the Abbey once again became a house of prayer,
dedicated to St. Mildred, the patron saint of Thanet.

help keep your vehicles safe:-
PREVENTING CAR AND VEHICLE THEFT

Don't let thieves get an easy ride. Follow these

simple rules to protect your vehicle from thieves.

1. Lock your vehicle

Locking your vehicle, even when filling up or parked on your drive, greatly

reduces the possibility of it being targeted by an opportunist thief. Even if

you have locked your vehicle, check you haven’t left any windows or the

sunroof open.

If your vehicle has wing mirrors that fold in automatically when locked,
make sure you lock it properly. Criminal gangs are looking for vehicles

like these where the wing mirrors are still out because it is clear to them

that the vehicle has been left unlocked.
2. Keep the keys safe

Vehicles today are by and large more difficult to steal than ever, unless the

thief can access your key or fob to clone them. Keep your keys safe, out of

view when at home, and away from your front door. It’s not uncommon for

car keys to be stolen from inside your home by thieves fishing for them with

a stick and hook through the letterbox
3. Park responsibly

It’s always advisable to avoid parking in dark and secluded areas. It’s worth

an extra five or ten-minute walk if it means your vehicle is left in a well-lit

and busier street.

And if possible, always try to park in illuminated and staffed car parks or

those with a Park Mark safer parking award.
4. Watch for illegal tow trucks

Thieves often attempt to lift vehicles from the street, literally. So, if you see

a towaway crew acting suspiciously – especially if their vehicle isn’t branded

or if they’re not in uniform – then please report it immediately.
5. Fit good in-car security locks

Bear in mind that built-in steering locks aren’t necessarily thief-proof. Many

can be forced and broken. Fitting a ‘Sold Secure’ steering wheel, gear lever

or clutch pedal security device can give your vehicle added protection.
7. Double-check electronic locking

Electronic devices can be used to jam the electronic signal from your key

fob to lock your vehicle. Always manually check your vehicle has locked

before walking away.

If unsure, lock it manually, then scan the immediate area for anyone

hanging around. If a potential thief who’s watching feels they’ve been

spotted, they’ll probably move off.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Parish Council for
providing the village with a wonderful Jubilee celebration.
Myself, my family and Village Voices had a lovely time and were very proud
to be able to be a part of it and I know that Village Voices also felt
extremely honoured to be a part of the lighting of the Jubilee Beacon.
Thank you for involving us.
Keep safe and enjoy the sunshine,
