Minster Church Clock Face Restoration

We would like to sincerely thank all those kind and generous people who have donated to the restoration
appeal.
An astounding sum of £2200 has been raised in around 3 weeks towards the restoration.
Along with the many contributions, folk have mentioned memories they have of the church and the part it
has played in their past. The is no doubt that to many people the church and its clock are an important
feature of Minster.
Saturday 10th of July was the first day of the Minster Open Gardens event, but it was mucky weather which
reduced footfall around the village. Despite this, the stall set up in the churchyard managed to collect nearly
£100.
On the 31st of July we will have a stall at Attwells yard with some pictures to sell for a donation. There will
also be a collecting box. We are working on setting up a concert in the church later in the year to support
the restoration.
John Quittenden would like to point out that it is not possible to pay money into his account in a Post Office
but if you wish to contribute a donation then please use a bank transfer; details are published in the Minster
Matters article.
Alternatively, John would be happy to receive donations at Minster Garage, either cheques or cash. There
are also some collection jars around the village for donations.
Finally, if you have any interesting anecdotes, personal stories or recollections of the church or its clock which
you would be happy to share then please speak to John Quittenden, Derek Crow-Brown, or contact me on
[email protected]
Thank you all for your generous support.

LOOKING AHEAD

at
Parkminster Gardens and Tea Rooms

Looking Ahead is a local organisation providing support and work training
placements for adults with learning needs. It is designed to enable students to move
towards more independent living and gain necessary skills for work. The training is
delivered in a fun filled interactive manner. We really appreciate the support of our
visitors particularly those from the village. Not only do we run the tea rooms but we
care for the Parkminster Gardens along with our woodwork project and our craft
activities.

We are open Tuesday to Saturday 9.30am to 4.00pm. Why not come and try our
fresh homemade cakes and scones!

We also run a series of art workshops on a Saturday which are open to the general
public. The workshops cater for a range of abilities with all materials provided and
light refreshments. Please ask a member of staff for more details.

RNLI Thanet Fundraising Group

We have now started the fundraising having done the Mayday Mile which raised £800 and a
Street Collection in Birchington which raised £673.41. We are still keen to find locations to host
RNLI Collection Boxes and we would like to launch the Betty’s 5p Pots scheme in Minster. If you
are willing to get involved in any way please contact us on our RNLI Thanet Fundraising Group
Facebook page or contact our Group Leader Sarah Hewes on [email protected]
We are need of new volunteers and look forward to hearing from anyone who would like to get
involved.

Minster Open Gardens 10th-11th July

How wonderful to see Minster High Street alive again with smiling faces, even in the pouring rain!

We weren’t sure if we should have Open Gardens with restrictions still in place and so much
uncertainty about the future, but we are so glad we did! The overwhelming feedback was that people
were so happy to be out at an event, feeling more normal again.
Everyone was willing to maintain distance and take care as they
moved around. Masks were worn inside when necessary and tables
ready for diners were 2m apart.

We need to say a huge thank you to the gardeners who were brave
enough, after careful consideration, to agree to have visitors in their
garden. Being an outdoor event helped, but it was certainly not a
risk-free undertaking. Thanks also need to go to those volunteers
who helped serve refreshments or were stewards, assisting in
gardens or car park, with all the necessary safe-guards in place.

So, not a normal Open Gardens, but a celebration after 18 months,
of a little more freedom, even if a trifle damp!

And to all of you who ignored the rain and the risk and came along to Open Gardens this year, thank
you for making it such a success and raising £3302.18 to help keep St Mary’s Church building-“The
Cathedral of the Marshes”- standing.

PCSO’s REPORT
Dear all,
As we know there are more and more scams these days but after speaking with a few of you, I
have decided to focus on Romance Fraud.
Unfortunately, with this type of scam, unwitting victims can and do part with thousands and at
times hundreds of thousands of pounds. The perpetrators tend to prey on the more vulnerable
and perhaps lonely in our communities and lead the victim into believing that they are in the
throes of a loving and caring relationship.
Criminals are experts at impersonating people. They spend hours researching you for their scams.

How to spot the signs
You’ve struck up a relationship with someone online and they declare their love for you quickly. Many fraudsters
claim to be overseas because they work in the military or medical profession.

They make up excuses as to why they can’t video chat or meet in person, and will try to move your conversations
off the platform you met on.

When they ask for financial help, it’ll be for a time-critical emergency, and the reason will be something that pulls at
the heartstrings. They may get defensive if you decline to help.

Their pictures are too perfect – they may have been stolen from an actor or model . Reverse image search
(https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/1325808?hl=en) can find photos that have been taken from
somewhere else.

They tell you to keep your relationship private and not to discuss anything with your friends and family.

How to protect yourself
STOP: Take a moment to stop and think before parting with your money or information.

CHALLENGE: Is this person really who they say they are? Could it be fake? It’s OK to reject, refuse or ignore any
requests for your financial or personal details. Criminals will try to rush or panic you.

PROTECT: Contact your bank immediately if you think you’ve fallen for a scam and report it to Action Fraud
(https://www.actionfraud.police.uk/) If you’re in Scotland, you can report to Police Scotland by calling 101.

On a brighter note, I would like to inform you that our current CSU Inspector, INSP TYLER has been successful with
her promotion to Chief Inspector. She doesn’t yet know where she will be posted but wherever it is they will be very
lucky to have her. This means that our current Sergeant is acting up to inspector,  A/INSP ROBSON and we have a
new sergeant, PS FIRTH.

See you all around the village.
Stay safe,
Debs

COMMUNITY WARDEN’S REPORT
Hello Minster
Well by the time you read this, everything has gone to plan, the lockdown has ended and
restrictions have been lifted.
Now that statement is either 100% accurate or totally wrong so I’m going to continue with
blind faith ……..
Ending of restrictions for some people is going to be fabulous and they can’t wait for it, but for
others it’s s a worrying prospect, they may have issues that make them vulnerable or just feel
unsure about the lifting of restrictions, so can I ask that we use common sense and maybe a
little empathy, understanding and kindness bout how we react to people who still want to wear a mask and maybe
even if it’s not mandatory wear a mask yourself in crowded situations, or were you think it might appropriate, let’s
hope this is the start of a positive  move away from Covid and restrictions and I look forward to seeing your mask
free faces in and around the village.
All the best,
Karl
