I would like to thank Ray Owen and his team at Minster Matters, for their dedication and hard work in producing our local village magazine and wish them well for the future on-line editions. On the subject of thanks; I need to express my gratitude to all of our club members who helped organise, set up, run and clear away after our recent very successful charity open day. 4 Minster Matters AUGUST 2023 BEER CAVE ATTWELLS REOPENING FRIDAY 28/07/23

Minster Matters 5 Minster WI July has been a busy month…….our speaker at our July meeting was Keeley who is the owner of Foliage a houseplant and coffee shop in St Lawrence, Ramsgate. She started by telling us how she moved from teaching into owning a shop and then she gave a very informative talk about houseplants, how to look after them, suitable plants for different areas and how to treat common problems. She brought along some beautiful houseplants for us to buy and each member went home with a cutting to grow on at home. A brilliant talk and a fab place to visit. We also got involved with the annual Minster Show. We managed to enter the cooperative exhibit, which we came joint first with The Bowls Club, and the horticultural exhibit which we also came first in. Several members joined in the fancy dress parade dressed as ‘Queens’-congratulations to the Queen of Hearts, Queen Bee, Boudicca, Queen Anne Boleyn, Queen Victoria, and the two Cleopatra’s queens of the Nile-which we also came first in!! Thank you to all the members who helped by baking, crafting, growing, arranging, setting up and generally taking part!! Finally we had our annual strawberry afternoon tea-we just about managed to dodge the showers and had a lovely afternoon in Rosemary’s garden eating delicious homemade afternoon tea. There is no meeting in August but we are having Bat and Trap followed by a fish and chip supper on the Rec and we are also meeting up with Garlinge WI for their games afternoon. We have a consultation document which I would encourage you to view and comment on. This can be found by typing K.C.C. Community Wardens into any search engine and I’m hoping the links in this text will also work. To help meet the financial challenge the Council is facing, the Community Warden service has been asked to reduce its annual budget by £1 million by 2024-25. To achieve this level of saving, we will need to redesign the service. The Consultation document provides information on the current Community Warden service, including what it does and how it operates, why we are proposing to make changes and how we have developed our proposals, the proposed changes to the service and details of other options that have been considered. The proposals presented in this consultation have been developed with information from service users and input from staff and partners. Most of the service’s £2.4 million budget provides the salaries of community wardens. To reduce the service budget by the required £1 million, staffing reductions are needed. In summary, we are proposing to: redesign the service, ensuring there is a core Community Warden presence across the county, with teams covering two districts, retain the remit and community-based way the service currently works but cover fewer communities, use data and information to identify where to place wardens for most impact. Have your say! Before any decisions are made, we want to hear your views on: 1) how the proposed reductions and approach to allocating wardens could impact you 2) any additional information that you think we need to consider 3) any alternative suggestions for how the service could make the savings 4) the assumptions we have made in the draft Equality Impact Assessment (EqIA). Since the first edition in February 2000, then 4 pages in black and white, the magazine has come a long way through your own editorship and enthusiasm, and that of your team. I know from my own experience how demanding being editor is, and the huge commitment required to meet publishing deadlines. Sadly, the cost of printing has risen significantly and with people's changing buying habits, there are many other ways that traders can advertise their services. Although we are ourselves 'ex-pats' from Minster we have always enjoyed receiving our monthly copy as a way of keeping in touch with what is going on in the village and the people- sadly less and less- that we knew. Minster is a good place to live, even with its significant increase in size, and the village will miss its 'Matters'. Possibly the magazine or something similar will reappear in the future, but we send our thanks to the editorial and publishing team for all their past hard work, and hope that you all enjoy your well-earned retirements. With best wishes, Chris and Kelvin Holdom (Editor’s Note: For those who may not know, Kelvin was the former editor and originator of the magazine)

AUGUST 2023 Minster Matters 9 Minster Shed Report Another busy month at the Shed with both the Open Gardens and the Minster Show we committed to attending, so it was all hands on deck to get items made which we could sell to keep the Shed financially sound. We had also been asked to refurbish the Minster Show trophy stands ready for the show. We hope all of you who saw them will agree they set off the trophies well. Unfortunately, the weather went against us at the Minster Show and we reluctantly had to pack up early. Luckily, we were well supported by our Shed members so were able to clear everything without too much damage despite getting very wet ourselves. We therefore have some items left unsold, but should you have been looking forward to seeing what we had for sale you can always visit us at the Minster Shed at the rear of The Bell Inn, St Mildred Rd on a Tuesday or Thursday morning. In last month’s issue we asked if anyone had a metalwork lathe they were looking to get rid of. We had 3 replies, thanks to the power of Minster Matters and one lathe has now been secured. Thanks to all of you who answered our call. Open Gardens 17-18 June 2023 15 gardens opened on Saturday, 12 on Sunday! Four lovely new gardens joined in making an amazing variety of spaces. The generosity of the gardeners, opening their private retreats for everyone to see, sharing ideas and advice. A wonderful range of refreshments from Peter Mockeridge in Tothill St to Parkminster Tearooms, with Old Schools and the W.I. at Old Oak Cottage in the middle. Thank you to everyone who played a part in the weekend, raising over £4600 for maintaining the beautiful church of St. Mary’s. It was also very special to have Nigel Mather opening his garden to raise money for Pancreatic Cancer research. Sarah is sorely missed and it was wonderful to see people still remembering her pixie garden and donating in her memory. Her cheerful enthusiasm for everything including Open Gardens will not be forgotten. A huge thank you to the gardeners, to refreshment organisers and stewards, the support of the Sisters at the Abbey, and the Salvation Army. Without all of you, the event wouldn’t take place. Thank you too, to the Royal British Legion, The Bell Inn, Archie’s Fish & Chips, Hair of the Dog, Jemima’s, The New Inn and Minster Meze & Grill for their support; and to Thanet Earth for their donation of tomatoes. Another great weekend in Minster’s diary and another occasion showing the incredible teamwork that the village inspires! THANK YOU so much on behalf of all who would like to keep St Mary’s Church standing! Pat Hogben

Our hosts opted for al fresco dining this year with great musical bands for entertainment. Helicopter rides were available for those who wished to take advantage of an aerial view of the village, whilst those watching fought for a shady spot to try and keep cool. Gifts were exchanged during the formal speeches. As mentioned in last month’s magazine, we were unable to book our September Quiz with the British Legion, so we have now secured the Old Schools for 23 September. We will be able to accommodate 80 people, with tables up to a maximum of 8. The cost as before is £7.50 which will include a ploughman’s supper, but this time, you will need to bring your own drinks. All tables should be booked with Carol on 07745 683 466. The following quiz on 18 November will be back at the British Legion. On 22 July at Minster Show, we were pleased to welcome eight of our friends from Armbouts Cappel. They were happy to join in the fun of the parade and were thrilled that we took one of the 1st prizes for our efforts. The idea for this entry came from Kate Mockeridge who also spent many hours making the tabards and crowns for all, in keeping with the theme of the show. Following the parade, the afternoon started off well with the team manning the stalls. Germaine from France was working especially hard encouraging both young and old to enter into the spirit of the games until that fateful time that the heavens opened! A meal had been booked at the Bell Inn, which was welcomed after the soaking we had all received. We spent the evening in the marquee dancing to the Ceilidh band, which was thoroughly enjoyable. As it was a late evening, our friends stayed at the Holiday Inn and travelled home on Sunday, very tired but full of the fun that they had experienced. (This even included the stereotypical English weather!)

18 Minster Matters AUGUST 2023 Minster Show 2023 A massive thank you from the Show Committee to those who helped make this year a success in spite of the weather. There is a long list that will be read out at the AGM; but many of you don't get to hear it, so here is a bit of a preview. The Show starts on Friday with those who put up the trestles and Roy who delivers them; this continues with Alan and teams of helpers who put up gazebos, move chairs and prepare the arenas. On Saturday morning Neil, Rob and Adrian, ground staff from the Parish Council help with electrics and putting up the music showcase marquee. They contribute their time every year so Minster has an exclusive area for the music. The Parade is organised by Roy Bailey, the Carnival Court Marshalls, along with Lizzie and Paul Brown for the Committee, and participated in, by Carnival Courts and the amazing village groups and individuals who take the time and trouble to dress up and walk down. Viv and John provide the Show Princesses car and every year it is decorated beautifully. The Princesses always look radiant and so happy on the back of it in the Parade. Thank you to all those who videoed or photographed during the day, either as public or on our behalf. On the day, the raffle, with many prizes donated by villagers or village businesses, is always very popular. Thank you to the teams of people who sell, write and fold raffle tickets. Also, thanks to the Lions basketball team and Anne for being on the gates and collecting the entrance fees. I am aware there was much discussion on Facebook about the cost of entry, but we have tried to maintain the same price for a number of years now to enable people to attend. Keeping the costs down is helped by the Parish Council allowing us to use the Recreation Ground; and Minster Garage for sponsoring the flyers and posters, the Tweedale family and Ed Spanton for allowing us storage space for the trestles and other equipment that gets used to create the Showground as you see it on the day, and Thanet Waste who supply a free skip annually which is very kind of them and gratefully received, as there is always a large amount of rubbish generated by the Show. This year the Show was also supported financially, by Joe Ling with a donation, this is a public thank you. The centre of the Show is of course the main marquee so thank you to everyone who put in exhibits. If you visited the marquee you may have noticed that the trophies looked resplendent on a newly covered stand. This work was completed by members of Minster Shed and we are very grateful that they have done such a good job at short notice - thank you for your time and skills. Thanks also to those who stayed through the rain and watched Juggleitall and Pat the magician. The showcase marquee became a party venue when the rain arrived with Minster’s fantastic Village Voices Choir backing Ozzie and the Uglies. Hopefully next year the weather will be kinder and remember how to behave and Minster can, once again, show Thanet how to celebrate a traditional village event. These ‘buttresses’ (if I can refer to them as such!) have been so very generous in giving time, energy, money; in showing kindness and sensitivity; and in making valuable suggestions and seeing initiatives through to really wonderful conclusions. [ … ] The church has lots of architectural buttresses, including three flying buttresses at the east end (Conyngham Road end) which literally stop the north and south walls falling outwards. However, it is the buttress support received from the village community which the Parochial Church Council [PCC] wishes to mention as being of huge, and vital, importance to the well-being of the building.’ This month, there is really good news in relation to the ‘big building at the bottom of the hill’ which – I hope - everyone can share in. Whilst bearing in mind that the church building has evolved over the last 1,000 years (parts of what we can see are Norman), we know, by its very age and its Grade 1 Listing, that it defies most attempts to make it more eco-efficient. However, the Parochial Church Council [PCC] has already made strides to do so – often supported by our ‘buttresses’. The internal LED lighting is one area previously addressed, and there are plans to cascade this out to include the Tower lights, which haven’t been used for some time. These changes, together with other less obvious moves, have made it possible for the parish church to receive a Bronze Eco Church Award given by the A Rocha Foundation (a UK based environmental organisation). This has been due to the efforts of Liz Shervington and Kate Mockeridge, who completed a free, unique, online Eco Survey about how we are caring for God’s earth in different areas of our life and work. It works on a points system, so it may be possible, in the future, to step up to a silver award! The Bronze Award is something the PCC wishes to celebrate with the whole community – and, certainly, the Parish Council has been very encouraging in helping us to manage the environmental impact this huge building has as we work towards enhancing the resources we already have at hand. In due course an eco-friendly plaque will be put up to highlight that your Parish Church has Bronze eco credentials! Last month I wrote about music – in particular, to extend an invitation to a Summer Concert given by Thanet Light Orchestra (TLO). Thank you to those who supported it and who generously donated to the retiring collection. Almost £400 was received which was split three, equal, ways between the Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB), the TLO and St. Mary’s.
