EDITORIAL

Firstly, a warm welcome to our new members and I hope they will enjoy this
Newsletter and find something of interest in it. If any of you would like to
submit a suitable article on your new puppy or an old love, or a photo that
means a lot to you, then please email me and I will be happy to try and include
this to the next edition. Don’t forget - this applies to all members.

Secondly, can I draw your attention to a couple of articles coming up in this
Newsletter. We have Discover Dogs at ExCel again in November and if
anyone has a dog that loves cuddles and is bomb-proof, then please contact
Elaine Norris (details on page 2). Also, please make a note of our AGM
coming up in June and it would be lovely to see some more of you there with
ideas and inspirations on what the Club could be doing (assuming we are not
already doing it and its legal!)

Please make a note on your calendar that our Open Show is being held again
this year at Baginton Village Hall on 16th September. This year we have
Teresa Andrews (Cyberus) doing the judging. We are usually extremly lucky
with the weather and this helps with the lively and friendly atmosphere that is
found around and in the ring. Anyone with a puppy between 4 and 6 months
will get the chance to enter the Puppy Walk usually held between judging of
the dogs and bitches. If you have a dog or bitch who is over 6 months then
please enter them either for competition or not for competition. We would
love to see you either way. Details will be out on the Higham Press website a
little closer to the date. It will also give you a chance of purchasing one of our
wonderful calendars made up of the photogaphic competition entries – of
which there were a staggering 163 this year. Thank you so much to everyone
who took part and sent me your photos. Sorry that only a few can be used for
the calendar but the rest will be on our Facebook page and on our website.

MASTIFF ASSOCIATION

Breed Championship Show
Saturday 17th February 2018

Judge: Mr Frank Kane

Best In Show – Ch Faynad Frankincense
Reserve Best In Show – Ch Fragilis Fausta

Best Dog – Ch Faynad Frankincense
Best Bitch – Ch Fragilis Fausta
Res. Dog – Cwmtyswg Madoc

Res. Bitch – Mullak Heart of Hearts
Best Puppy – Cwmtysswg Sabine

Best Veteran – Ch Cedwalla Country Boy By Heffalump

I consider it a great honour to be invited to judge a breed club
show and it was a pleasure to judge for this association, with an entry
of 56 Mastiffs. Health wise I was pleased to see the great majority free
of exaggeration with healthy skin, only 2 exhibits with slightly wet eyes.
A couple of shy exhibits, a bit nervous in being examined, but young
enough to improve with more experience. Hindquarters, hocks and
rear angulation were the most prevalent weaknesses.

A very sporting atmosphere prevailed with all class winners
being well applauded. Type and size varied. I found heads very varied
with some deep stops and very rounded skulls and low set ears giving a
foreign look.

I enjoyed my day immensely, thank you to Jean Pennie and her
team for making me so welcome and, for the sensible starting time, with
brunch and a generous memento. Many thanks to my stewards Elaine
Norris, Jed Ling and Scott Hamblett.

Best in Show was the brindle dog Ch Faynad Frankincense at 3
years old he is in peak form, a combination of type and soundness and
6

carries himself well and is true at both ends. He is not the tallest of
dogs but he has plenty of bone, substance and quality and was a
comfortable winner for me.

Reserve Best in Show was the 19 months fawn bitch Ch Fragilis
Fausta, big strapping bitch of excellent length, bone and substance.
Loses nothing in femininity. Head of good skull and foreface
proportion, maximum lip and good eyes. Has very good profile stride
to cover the ground well. Still looks a teenager which is
understandable but she must have a great future.

Best Puppy, the brindle bitch Cwmtysswg Sabine, almost 12
months, beat her litter brother for this award being better in front
action. She is a great prospect and has really good quarters and
movement.

Best Veteran the dog Ch Cedwalla Country Boy by Heffalump,
obviously loves the showring and moved round with great style, driving
from strong quarters. He is tall and typy and has a remarkable topline
coming from good ribbing. A great character shown in pristine
condition.

Class 1: VETERAN DOG Entries 1 Absentees 0

1st Mrs E Herring & Mr J
Dodd's CH CEDWALLA
COUNTRY BOY BY
HEFFALUMP
8 years old who is a great
advert for the breed being fit,
active and sound and enjoying
life. He also, has the benefit of
good type without exaggeration
good length of body and firm
hindquarters. Good head
proportions. Front just a little
loose now but a good start to
the day.

7

Class 2: MINOR PUPPY DOG Entries 3 Absentees 1

1st Ms M Weightman's CADERMIST STORM RAFAEL

7 months beautiful rich fawn/apricot a real baby who needs to grow
on but he scored in head proportions and is beautifully sound at both
ends, if a little bemused by the experience of his first show. Holds a
good topline. I liked him enormously and think him an excellent
prospect for the future.
2nd Mr S & Mrs T Coulman-Hole's FAYNAD MAGIC MAN FOR
WOMLU
8 months bigger dog of good body shape, good chest and rib. A little
uncoordinated on the move. At the moment his head is a little domed
and he can grow into his ears.

8

Class 3: PUPPY DOG Entries 4 Absentees 1

1st Mr M & Mrs P Gittins' CWMTYSSWG SULTAN

Very forward brindle of almost 12 months, he has a very good breed
type with an excellent head and eye – good body length and excellent
chest. His coat is a little long. His movement at both ends can
improve, particularly behind. He does not need to carry any more body
weight.
2nd Mr D Mrs L Elder's CADERMIST STORM ERNESTO
7 months fawn of very good type. A real baby but has a lot of quality.
A little narrow throughout yet but a good head and good body
proportions. Excellent temperament.
3rd Mr P & Mrs C Popp's CYBERUS APOLLO
9

Class 4: JUNIOR DOG Entries 6 Absentees 1

1st Mr M & Mrs P Fox's THOMASTER ARMASTICE DAY

14 months brindle dog, appealed a lot for type and proportions. He
has a very good head and good eyes. Good topline and very good
bone, chest and feet. He is a touch narrow behind at the moment but
sound and he carries himself well, scoring in topline here.
2nd Mr R Beaumont & Mrs C Hesketh's KARYSMHOR DYLAN'S
STAR
16 months best mover in the class, sound and strong at both ends. At
the teenage stage in the body. He is a little long in the couplings and
this showed in his topline. Strong skull and good eye.
3rd Mr C Hazlewood's CRAIGLESTONE LORD THUDFOOT
10

Res Mr S Saward & Ms C Andrews' MAHOOSTIFF GOD OF
THUNDER

VHC Mrs V Miller's QUATERMAIN OF CHEESE HILL WITH
BRINDAREE (IMP)

Class 5: NOVICE DOG Entries 1 Absentees 0

1st Mr S Saward & Ms C Andrews’ MAHOOSTIFF GOD OF
THUNDER

16 months tall
imposing fawn with
excellent length of
body and a good back
end coming from his
good angulation and
good hocks. Good
head and eye. At the
moment his front,
feet and pasterns can
firm up and this
shows in his front
action. However, he
has a lot of type and
quality and should
come on well

11

Class 6: POST GRADUATE DOG Entries 2 Absentees 1

1st Mr T & Mrs R Matheson's KUMORMAI THE TRICKSTER

32 months old, a fawn of very good type with good ribcage and very
good hind quarters and strong hocks which he uses really well. His eye
is a little round. Good strength under the eyes. Can firm up in elbows,
and pasterns which shows in his front action. Needs a little more
confidence in the ring. In the challenge much more composed and
pressed hard for the Res CC, the best quarters and rear drive of the day
and I hope he will go on to better things.

12

Class 7: LIMIT DOG Entries 4 Absentees 0

1st Mr S & Mrs T Coulman-Hole's FAYNAD FIFTY SHADES

2 years fawn and still a teenager in the body. He scored heavily in
movement here. I’d like more substance all through and I hope time
with help him there. Movement and temperament excellent.
2nd Mr S & Mrs T Coulman-Hole's FAYNAD HUMPTY
DUMPTY FOR WOMLU
Litter brother and I preferred him for type and whilst he was sound he
lacked confidence. Scores in head and substance.
3rd Ms S Whiteley's MULALOO MAGIC TOUCH
Res Ms V. Miller's MULLAK HANDSOME HUGO OF
BRINDAREE
13

Class 8: OPEN DOG Entries 5 Absentees 1

1st Mr G Zadeh's FAYNAD FRANKINCENSE

3 years, stood away for type and soundness. Beautifully boned without
coarseness. Good skull and eye and foreface. Excellent substance and
strong and sound on the move. DCC & BIS
2nd Mr M Clarke's CWMTYSSWG MADOC
3 years, appealed in head and eye and general outline. Not the
maturity of body of the winner and not the width in chest. His rear
movement is a little close but, in the challenge, he had the advantage
of eye and front action over the Post Grad winner and he took the Res

Class 9: VETERAN BITCH Entries 2 Absentees 0

1st Mr R Allen's FENRIR DU RANC DE BANNES

7 years fawn in great condition. Lovely breed type all though from her
strong head and excellent type and firm topline. Still sound, just a
touch close in rear. Lovely bitch pressed the male veteran hard but just
tired a little in front action in the challenge.
2nd Ms E Knight's KUMORMAI DEBUTANTE
10 years, lighter framed but a very good stride on her. Clean eyes.
Not the substance or topline of the winner but a great credit to breed
and owner.

and she uses
them well.
Quality head,
good
substance and
topline.
16

2nd Mr S & Mrs T Andrews' CYBERUS VERENA
9 months fawn with lovely topline, length and coat. She needs to let
down in rear and strength in second thigh but she scored in topline
and head to take this place. Sound moving but a bit reluctant but she
has quality.
3rd Mr G Zadeh's FAYNAD FLOELLA
Res Mr D Mrs L Elder's CADERMIST STORM ODETTE

she gets over this as I liked her.

Strong but feminine in head. Good ears.

18

Class 15: LIMIT BITCH Entries 8 Absentees 1

Two excellent bitches to top this followed by others I liked.

1st Mr K Dickinson's MULLAK HEART OF HEARTS

5 years brindle, a

beautiful typy bitch

and I liked a lot about

her although she

could come on a little

cleaner in her front

action. Great

quarters and hind

action from strong

hocks. Excellent

topline at all times

which won her Res

BCC in the challenge.

2nd Mr J & Mrs M Bromley’s HARTING COOMBE HILL AT
SPIRITHILL
6 years fawn, lovely type, taller than the winner but not quite the
bone. Sound moving, free of exaggeration. Holds a good topline and
head of good proportions. Excellent coat and condition.

World Dog Show 2017: by Claire Whelan

Leipzig,
Germany

8-12
November

The conversation was the beginning..........“ The World Dog Show is being
held in Leipzig in November”. “Where’s Leipzig ? “ “No idea, I’ll Google it “
And that is how we ended up spending four days in Leipzig and what a
wonderful trip it was. We flew to Munich and then flew onward to Leipzig.
I was quite confident that my schoolgirl German would ensure we had a
trouble free experience but this proved to be so wrong when we boarded a
train to our Hotel which was adjacent to the Show venue. An hour later we
arrived back where we had started but we eventually arrived at the Hotel
after a lot of walking and even more expletives.
The next day we made our way to the Show which was held at the Leipziger
Messe, a very impressive building constructed of glass and steel and as you
would expect, everything was extremely well organised. We headed straight
to ring 37 where 114 mastiffs were waiting to be shown. There was no
benching and very little seating, so the floor surrounding the ring was strewn
with Mastiffs, lots and lots of Mastiffs! The judge was Mr Ozan Belkis from
Turkey who was undertaking his first Mastiff judging appointment. Having
never seen the European style of judging before, it was all rather confusing
with different colour cards being shown to the exhibitors. It appears that,
unlike football, if you are shown a red card you are not sent off. Blue and
yellow cards were also awarded and on making enquiries with our fellow
spectators, nobody seemed to understand the colour card system. Some of
the classes were large in numbers, the Dog Champions Class attracting 23
entries and the Bitch Junior Class attracting 19. The ring was quite small so it
was difficult to assess movement and the carpeted surface made it quite
tricky for the dogs to move freely. The UK representative was Adam and Kim

29

Clarke’s Champion Gator Debra Damo who gave a very good account of
himself being awarded an ‘Excellent. ‘ There were also some UK bred
Mastiffs being shown. Best of Breed was Cosimo Del Fracasso, a very
impressive fawn owned by Antonio Fracassi from Italy.
The Mastiffs at the Show were very diverse in type. In these days of social
media we get to see pictures of many foreign bred dogs so it is quite
interesting when you actually get to see them in the flesh. Peoples ideas of
the perfect Mastiff differ greatly, but from my own observations, the grass is
not always greener and our home bred dogs are certainly up there with the
best .
We watched other Molosser breeds being judged and it was lovely to see the
various types of Mastiff, which we do not get to see in this country, being
shown. We then heard a familiar voice-it was Frank Kane ! We had a long
chat and he very kindly took us to the Best In Show Ring. He directed us to
ringside seats and we thankfully sat down and watched the glitzy, razz-a-
matazz of the Best In Show which was quite an event in itself lasting for
several hours.
We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to the World Dog Show and Leipzig is a
beautiful city with stunning architecture, an interesting history and even
boasts a C&A and a Woolworths !

Next stop – Amsterdam in August!

DISCOVER DOGS
CRUFTS

8th – 11th March 2018

Discover Dogs Crufts was a huge success again this year. The
Kennel Club informed us that the numbers for the show were up
again on last year with nearly 166,000 people attending over the
4 days. Apparently Channel 4 viewing figures exceeded 11.2
million. I think Saturday was the busiest day – you could hardly
walk through the halls and the dogs were exhausted by the end
but it was a wonderful atmosphere and we were bombarded with
a lot of genuinely lovely people who took great delight in meeting
our boys and girls.

An enormous thanks must go to all those who gave up their time
to man the stand: Kim & Adam Clarke with Gator, Istas and
BamBam, Denise Baxter with Flynn, Malcolm Clark with Dave,
Sara with Saxon, Teresa, Simon and Ryan Andrews with Hersia,
Harley and Quincy. Thank you as well to Jo Bowdery and Jean
Pennie who shared the stand with Eve and to John & Margaret
Bromley with Blossom. A thank you to Colin Hill for helping me
put up the stand. My youngster Gwyneth was a little star and
actually behaved herself (well almost).

The best booth in the
working group went to the
Great Dane with Picardy
Sheepdog (Pastoral) taking
the overall prize. However, I
think our stand stood up well
compared to the others and
we had some very nice
comments about it.

31

We had some

very interesting

people come

along not least

this lovely couple

of Chelsea
Pensioners – who

were very

impressed with

our dogs.

Some of our wonderful dogs
who served their time on

the stand and were a huge
credit to the breed. Thank
you all so much
