The 2017 year has again been a challenging one and also a rewarding year for all of us.
As Board Chairman, we have the privilege of seeing some of the operation under planning that take place
to ensure our children receive quality education. Our role is primarily to act as a sounding mechanism for
the Principal and Executive on matters of a financial and commercial nature, Acting as an avenue of
consultation for the Principal and management to gauge options on particular initiatives or matters of
interest.
I think we are not fully aware of how much work is involved in managing the school by the management
with close to 1000 students ranging from Year 9 to Year 13. Whether it is daily teaching activities, sports,
cadet, school masses, school functions, preparing for assembly items, arranging excursions or tending to
our children’s needs, there is significant expertise, planning, flexibility and at all time patience, that is
required by the teaching staff. Our staff, stakeholders, and education providers continues to be key
groups that we work with , providing support and opportunities to be more engaged and increasingly
capable. It is most important to develop the fundamental knowledge and skills in our children to ensure
we are developing a nation that is capable of participating in education, employment, sports, and other
opportunities and enjoy the benefits of it. As the environment around us continues to change, we have
remained focused on our purpose and developed our strategic plan to anchor us. The board will strive to
mould administration of the school so that it is conducive to the present day learning environment and in
the same time adapting a corporate culture that reaffirms the schools motto, “For Higher Things We
Strive.”
This year again we have seen the development and upgrading work of the school buildings
together with new equipment and with constructive assistance from the old scholars, we
reaffirm our focus towards a better learning environment.
My special thanks to the old scholars for their effort in contributing new dimensions ito
the management of our school. I offer my congratulation to the Principal, Staff, students,
old scholars and stakeholders for another memorable year.
May the Blessings of our Lord be Showered upon all of you during
Christmas and in the New Year, 2018

“Without vision people perish”. The realization of our beloved nation’s vision of a knowledgeable society, centers on the
provision of a quality and holistic education system. Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna Memorial School is one educational institution at the
forefront of making this vision a reality. In this regard, my office sees that such vision is translated into the formulation of schools
plans, its core values and further translated into its implementation through school programs and services. Administering a very
large ‘all inclusive’ educational institution is always a challenging task. But Jesus has said “Nothing is impossible to those who
believe.” So amidst, the daily demands of work, the hassles of life, faith in my Lord Jesus keeps me going; renewed in strength
each day and equipped for the task ahead, serving those under my care.
The 2017 academic year started on a high with both students and teachers enjoying the much improved results from
2016 external exams. This year saw some key changes to the school staffing with the inclusion of the new Vice Principal –Mr.
Epeli Tawake; Mrs Bhawna Singh as HOD Science; Mr. Meo as Actg.HOD Industrial Arts and Mrs. Vinita Deo as HOD Maths
replacing Mr. Khatri who was offered a tutoring post at USP. Four new assistant teachers also joined the school. Term 1 was a
hive of activities: the induction of school prefects with Brian Seru as Head Boy and Aritema Bokula as Head Girl. The school’s
interhouse competition was held at the ANZ stadium in Wk 6 and won by Uluiqalau House. Some of our elite athletes
represented the school in the Suva Zone 1 athletics meet, captained by Rusiate Rasigatale they were crowned second overall.
Tests were done during the term and the Term came to a close with Term 1 exam.
Teaching and learning continued in Term 2 and all senior levels were all working towards completing their coverage by
the end of the term. The Parents Teachers Interview was held in Week 2, in which a lot of parents attended. Ratu Sukuna Week
was celebrated on Friday week 3. Ratu Tu’akitau Cokanauto was chief guest. Student speakers from ACS, QVS, RKS and MGM
were also invited to speak on Inspirations of Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna. The day culminated with two cricket matches being played and
officiated by Fiji Cricket. Our girls’ team lost to ACS however our boys defeated QVS to win the trophy. The Cadet program was
conducted in week 7. The FMF Chief of Staff Lieutenant Colonel Onisivoro Niumataiwalu reviewed the parade and there was a
large turnout of parents and stakeholders. Rugby Union was organized during this term with the school competing in all the
rugby age groups. Our Under 16 team lost out in the national quarters to eventual grade winners, RKS. Our boys’ cricket team
won the secondary schools cricket competition defeating RKS in the finals whilst our girls lost to ACS in the finals. The school’s
Under 19 Volleyball team lost in the finals of the Fiji Secondary Schools Volleyball competition. Three school netball teams
travelled to Labasa during the two weeks holidays to participate in the Secondary Schools Netball competition. Three tests were
conducted during the term and these were scheduled to assist both teachers and students with their teaching and learning.
Term 3 was dedicated to preparing students for their external exams. All annual exams were staggered weekly from Wk
3 onwards for Y13, 12 &10. Year 9 & 11 had their annual exams in Wk 6. The school was so blessed by Pastor Atu Vulaono
accompanied by his church support group availed himself to share the gospel message to the school community on a weekly
basis. The school was not without its fair share of indiscipline problems, yet the school managed to endure. In view of improving
students’ academic performance, study camps were organized for our Year 12 & 13 students. A lot of students responded and
joined the camp in order to prepare for their external exams.
The year has been challenging yet enjoyable since I continue to see the favor of God at work always. In that regard, I
take this time to acknowledge the MOE for the advice rendered towards my office; the Board of Governors for support and
guidance; PTA, RSVO, Parents and stakeholders for all their assistance. I also would like to thank the prefects and students for
their worthwhile contributions; New Methodist Church Fellowship for taking care of the spiritual wellbeing of both staff and
students. More so, I would like to also thank all business houses for their support and services. Last but not least, hearty thanks
goes to all teachers and staff for all their hard work and sacrifices and to Master Usa and his team for the publication of the
‘Kakavaki 2018’.
Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, His love endures forever.

. It is an honor and a privilege for me to contribute to this year’s magazine and I thank the
Lord for having brought me back as Vice Principal after a lapse of two years.
Ratu Sukuna has grown tremendously for the last two years. With a school roll of more
than a thousand students, fifty teachers and 13 ancillary staff, it is indeed a daunting task
to help manage this institution. With mainly itaukei students and to a large extent
predominantly average abilities. We realize that we need to work extra hard in order to
compete with other schools.
The experience has challenged and enriched our commitment to the teaching profession.
The Globalized world in which we live in has fast-tracked us into the information age
whereby we as a Nation, Society and institution are faced with many challenges that
threaten our daily living and especially the lives of our students. The information age and
the dissemination of information can be an advantage and also a disadvantage if we are
not careful. For the students and teachers of this modern day and age, it is imperative
that we stay focused on our vision and core values as a school if we are to forge ahead
and maintain success into the future. Hence it is worthwhile to remind Teachers, Parents,
Old Scholars and stakeholders of the importance of working together for the benefit of
our students.
Once again I thank the Principal, Assistant Principal, Heads of Department, member’s of
the staff and all stakeholders of the school. Thank you for your commitment and
endurance.
A special thank you to all school leavers who will be going out this year. I wish them the
very best of luck in their external exams.
May you all have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
.

It is an honour and a privilege to contribute to yet another edition of our school magazine. And with so many events
that unfolded in the year, capturing a glimpse of those moments would be a best memento to remember in years to
come. Once again, thanks to the Magazine Committee for making this possible, adding that extra “scientific touch”
to this year’s edition of “Na Kakavaki”.
The year began with our school roll exceeding the one thousand mark quite earlier on. To assist in our school
organization, 64 school prefects and 48 Form prefects were chosen and inducted in Week 5 of Term I. They were
trained under the guidance of our teachers and were able to execute the duties as expected of them. In Term III, our
newly elected Junior Prefects step in to relieve our school prefects as they needed more time for their studies.
Looking back at the year and its happenings, there are a few practices that are worth mentioning.
The unfortunate school brawl between our school and John Wesley College during the Zone Meet in Term I took an
extraordinary twist when our school prefects took the initiative and presented a traditional presentation of
reconciliation or “bulubulu” to the school from Raiwaqa. This was a moving occasion and an educational one that
has instilled tolerance, respect and comradeship in our students.
The Ratu Sukuna Day celebration earlier in Term II was an enriching one that involved the stakeholders of the school
with students and teachers from MGM, ACS, QVS and RKS. The usual program involved oratory contest, traditional
attire parade, booth display, traditional games and cricket matches. These activities were vital as they help educate
our students to be appreciative of their culture and also promote healthy relationship among them. To top of the
day, the school also inducted the pioneering principals and head prefects into the school Hall of fame. This act of
love and appreciation for our senior citizens were of great significance and importance to the Sukuna Family.
The Cadet Program in late Term II was the best organized in years. Apart from instilling discipline in our students, the
event also rekindled the healthy house competition to another higher level, something that was amiss last year.
Amazingly it was marked by very fine weather as opposed to yesteryears. At such a shorter time frame, we were able
to pull our resources together and came up with a splendid performance, thanks to our hard working instructors
from RFMF 3FIR.
The weekly school assembly surprisingly changed for the better this year. Our school prefects boldly took on the
responsibility by organizing and leading each week, replacing our teachers as it has been in the past. This practice
instilled a lot of courage and confidence in our students and has set a good bench mark for the future.
The introduction of the “Students for Christ” program by the New Methodist Fellowship in late Term II came at no
better time. This one hour program was a great opportunity to guide and nurture our students spiritually, thanks to
Rev Atunaisa Vulaono and his team for their commitment.
Having highlighted the above issues does not spare our school from its fare share of challenges that we experienced
daily. One to mention is our students’ discipline, the lack of which always undermine student’s effective leaning in
schools.
From our record this year, there seems to be an increase in disruptive behaviors from students during classes which,
challenges our teachers daily. In addition, the grade one and two offences also came to light quite occasionally. In
dealing with such cases, parents and guardians are usually engaged in school for further discussion. In some
instances, police officers were even called in to deal with some serious cases and for other similar cases; students had
to be granted clearance to join other schools
While schools provide a learning environment for the child, the home environment remains the ultimate place for
instilling discipline. Failure to do so may prove disastrous for the child as they are deprived of their learning. Recent
cases that were highlighted in the social media proved right for our schools as it has now involved students in the
lower grades.
Parents must take interest now to listen attentively to their children’s needs, understand their plight, and work out
agreeable solutions to resolve them. We must act now before it is too late.
I wish all our students and teachers of Ratu Sukuna and their families, a merry Christmas and a prosperous 2018.

Yet another year has come to an end and it is my immense pleasure to contribute a brief
message on behalf of the Commerce Department for the academic year 2017.
The department is made up of four hardworking and determined teachers who were ready
to accept the challenge and work to their best to achieve the department targets for the
year. As the year began, the Department welcomed new teachers: Mrs Jotika Raman and
Mr Mosese Vuibeqa. The department is grateful indeed for the services rendered and
wishes to acknowledge the efforts of Mr Virimi Valevoro and Mr Bobby Maharaj who were
transferred to other schools at the beginning of this year.
The department tried its best to prepare students for the internal, external and standard
examinations at all levels and was focused in trying to achieve the department targets.
During the year, two department members attended workshop and workgroup meeting
conducted by the Ministry of Education and this will definitely enhance the teaching and
learning process.
I take this time to thank the department teachers for their hard work and their effort in
trying to complete their internal assessment and prepared students well for the external
examinations.
Also I would like to acknowledge the school management and the Administration team for
the support rendered throughout the year and also best wishes to all students sitting for
external exams
Merry Christmas & a Prosperous New Year

One of the important pillars for the Home Economics Department in the year 2017 is
to be able to provide a conducive environment for students to realize their potential
and to develop these to become more resourceful and self-reliant individuals. We
hope that whatever values, skills and knowledge that students have developed from
their contact hours with their teachers will benefit them and their families whether it
be in employment, entrepreneurship, homemaking or even just being constructive
members of society.
I heartily acknowledge the effort and contribution of Ms.Sainimili Seruitanoa, Mrs.
Prashna Prakash and Ms. Sindurta Lal . Your cooperation, initiative and willingness to
compromise during critical circumstances is highly commendable.
I must also thank Mrs. Selai Soronaivalu, the former Head of Department, for the
100% pass in the subject in the 2016 Year 13 Certificate Examination. The same also
for Ms.Sainimili Seruitanoa for the 100% pass rate in the subject in the 2016 Year 12
Certificate Examination. Our Years 9,10 and 11 still have plenty room for improvement
and we hope to achieve better results in these levels in 2017.
The department wishes to thank the Board of Governors, the school administrators
and parents for their contribution to the department.
We wish you a meaningful Christmas & a Blessed 2018

The attainment of quality results for all levels proved to be a great challenge for the Department . Despite
the odds and with the tireless efforts and commitment of the Department members coupled with the
assistance of the School Administration, the Department was able to fulfill its goals.
The Department in its quest to improve results conducted extra classes which continued till the external
exams. The Study Camp conducted in Term 3 assisted Years 12 and 13 students for night classes and
morning study sessions. To assist students gain a pass in English was no mean feat especially when there
are students with reading disabilities (non-readers) and students’ lack of regard for reading. There is an
urgent need to overcome complacency.
Students were able to display their talents and skills in oratory, poster and book mark display and poem
recital during the National Library Week celebration. Ruci Lili of Year 13A represented the school as an
Orator to speak on the theme ‘The Life and Works of Mahatma Gandhi’ at the Gandhi Day Celebrations.
The school is indebted to Mrs. Terei, our school librarian for engaging the students in various activities
for World Health Day and Global Health, Library Week and Climate Change COP 23. I wish to thank the
donations towards the school library from the United States Embassy (magazines), Ministry of Commerce
(book shelves, cabinets and tables) and British American Tobbaco (4 computers). Through the Library
grant, new chairs, computers and non-fiction and fiction books have been purchased.
I wish to particularly acknowledge the commitment, sacrifice and diligence of the members of the
Department – a team of enthusiastic teachers who have shouldered many responsibilities and who have
also struggled to meet expectations. It is my prayer that the Almighty showers his blessings abundantly.
Last but not the least, my sincere appreciation to the School Administration for its continued support.
Finally to the graduating students of RSMS, the sky is the limit, nothing is impossible, persevere to
accomplish and fulfill your dreams.
Wish you all a Merry Christmas & a Successful 2018

The Mathematics department RSMS team 2017, embarked on promoting ways to help students discover the joy of
learning Mathematics and to nurture the entrepreneurial spirit in students. In the classrooms, students were given
more opportunities to work collaboratively to find solutions for real-life mathematical problems.
The department teachers have been including many and varied strategies to enable students to explore, demonstrate
and reflect on their learning. In the spirit to enhance calculative ability in mathematics teachers have continued to
strive for innovative ways to inculcate confidence in our students to be able to think critically and apply mathematics
to real world problems.
We the team of 11 teachers collectively entered the race to find ways to improve the results of the department. The
target was to provide quality teaching and learning environment and resources for our students. There were several
challenges and the most unrelenting one was staff turnover for the department. I acknowledge the services of the
following team players with great admiration and appreciation:
1. Mr. Pranil Prasad transferred out during the second term.
2. Mrs. Neelam Prasad proceeded on maternity leave that created a vacuum. The department was
challenged to redistribute the teaching load
3. We welcomed Mr.Aporosa Davelevu. He fitted in so well and geared up with others to achieve the set
objectives of the department.
My sincere gratitude goes to my predecessor, Mr.Vipal Khatri. He left behind a legacy that we continue to cherish. I
graciously take hats off to the Principal, the deputies and all the support staff for their care and timely assistance to
ensure our goals get achieved.
Finally our best wishes to our valued customers (students) for their effort, cooperation and determination to help us
meet our targets. We wish them well for their external exams and the future endeavours. A hearty farewell to all
Year 13 students.

Greetings
Our life has been a rich one, having been blessed by God in many ways. This is about giving our best and
especially about doing whatever we can to help others. The most wonderful part of being a teacher is to think
that many years down the line; there will be someone, somewhere out there, thinking about how lucky they
were to be taught by a teacher as wonderful as yourself.
This exciting academic year began with the declaration of the excellent academic results attained by the
Department during the external exams of 2016. I therefore wish to congratulate and commend the efforts and
diligence of the hardworking teachers of the department. The department staffing maintains the services of
the returning teachers; however, Ms. Asinate Titifanua was transferred to Cuvu College and Mr. Tevita
Koroikata was transferred to Moce Secondary School. The department is indeed grateful to the two teachers
for the dedication, sacrifice and commitment rendered during their years of service at the school. However,
the Social Science Department welcomed another two very experienced teachers to teach History and
Geography and they are; Mrs. Kuini Vitukawalu who joined the school this year from Sigatoka Methodist High
School and Mrs Ranadi Railati transferred from Cuvu College.
To incorporate changes to the curriculum, Mrs. Vitukawalu attended the Year 13 History Workgroup Meeting at
the CDU in reviewing the Year 13 History syllabus and textbook while Ms. Kumar attended the Strengthening
Assessment Processes Workshop also at the CDU. The teachers concerned also conducted PD sessions to
enlighten the Department members of the new changes.
I once again thank all my colleagues –Mrs. Tekerau, Mrs. Vitukawalu, Mr. Bakanebo, Mrs. Vukayawa, Ms. Kumar,
Mr. Waqanivalu, Mrs. Railati and Mr. Kamusu - a team of young, enthusiastic, dedicated and devoted teachers
who work tirelessly and sacrifice willingly for the sake of the students, the department and the school. I am
optimistic that with God’s guidance, the department will continue to produce academic excellence in the years
to come. Without your support, much could not have been achieved this year. We have proven that we can
achieve a lot when we work together, support one another and everyone working as a team.
A special word of appreciation also goes to the Principal for his guidance and support throughout the year. I
wish to acknowledge the great assistance of the School Board in providing the necessary teaching and
learning materials and resources.
Wish you all a Merry Christmas & a Prosperous 2018

Greetings
We’re glad and excited to be part of this amiable challenging process in developing both long and short term plans
for the future development of our technical students and this fall, has given us the hope and knowledge that these
technical students will be the driving backbone and platform of our re-structured TEST curriculum and workforce in
this new technology era.
Firstly, I wish to thank the school Principal and administrators for their continuance assistance and support
holistically in having our paper plans laid-out into reality and also continuing to assist us in time of urgency.
Also our acknowledgement and appreciation to the hardworking HOD, Mr Ifereimi Taufa who was promoted to be a
school principal in Moce secondary school in the beginning of the year. Our sudden loss created a vacuum within for
a few days but it was a blessing in disguise when an experienced Mr Rokomarawa (Rt Navula) lately joined us to
support the continuing energetic team.
Secondly, VINAKA VAKALEVU colleagues for the tremendous hard work and sacrifice that paid-off in our pass rate
last year (2016) as follows: Y13 IT: 94%(IT), Y12TDD (12S-92%(EAK) 12T-73%(JT)), Y12T ATECH: 77% and also 79%
pass rate for Agriculture Science.
This year’s target was to improve our overall performance and the team was very much supportive and
hardworking, whereas we’re so much blessed with various skills and responsibilities that stretched out our individual
abilities to the limit of service within the RSMS family.
However, the Industrial Arts department offers Basic technology in year 9 and 10, Applied Technology in year 11 and
12 and Introduction to technology in year 13, whereas, Agriculture Science for year 9 – 13. Our junior projects in
Agriculture this year, produce a few income from poultry that was used to purchase the department’s scale and
gardening tools. Our moderation for 2017 was very successfully in terms of contributing holistically in designing and
implementing of 2018 special projects to be based on technology and drawing labs and slowly starting with the
renovating of our new AUTOCAD lab for 2018 use.
External exams may have completed for some and the rest are still working hard in the last minute to study and
prepare well, BE BLESSED, GOOD LUCK ALL and hope for the best when the results are out.
Finally, we believe in UNITY, LOVE AND PERSEVERANCE which is the core driving factors that energise the individual to
be positive and continuing doing our BEST to our full potential and God in our midst will do His greatness and wonders
when we do not lose HOPE….GALATIANS 6:9

“Ni sa bula vinaka”, to all parents, teachers, old scholars, school administrators and
supporters of this beloved school. It has been a great honor and privilege to be elected as
the Head Boy of this respected institution. The feeling of being chosen as the student
body leader is beyond words can describe, as it is a mixture of surprise, shock, fear and
worry, but I realized that this is the school that I cherish ever since Year 9 and it would
be special to take this opportunity as it is clearly stated that “with God everything is
possible”.
First of all, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude towards the teachers, the prefect
body and the Year 13 students, for without their support I would not be able to execute
my duties and meet obligations.
Furthermore I write this report not just to give an insight but to achieve a dream. It has
not been my dream to give this report so I can rule over others but to have the chance to
say “thank you” to the school and my family for their continuous support and words of
encouragement. My sincere gratitude to the prefects body especially the Head Girl
Aritema Rodan, the deputies Ruci Lili, Rupeni Yabaki, Marie Claire Mcgoon and
Samuela Togamalo. Not forgetting the school prefects for the continuous support, for
without them I would not be able to conduct my duties fully.
The Prefect body is mostly indebted to the Assistant Principal Mr. Isikeli Vuniwaqa for
his genuine work in advising and motivating the prefects in every step of this journey.
Additionally I must admit that being the Head Boy was a difficult task but the combined
effort of the students and my form mates of Year 13A made the burden easier and the
goods declared effectively and efficiently along with new challenges.
Finally I take my hats off for the year 2017 for the hard work and cooperation and to the
future prefects of RSMS, do not doubt the abilities but be reminded of the words of John
Maxwell “Leaders become great, not because of their power, but because of their ability
to empower others”.
I wish the Sukuna family a blessed Christmas with their family and friends and have a
prosperous 2018!!!
May God Bless You!!!

Cola vina’, Bula Vinaka and greetings to all readers of this issue of Nakakavaki. I am feeling
nostalgic as I pen these last words to you my RSMS family.
On behalf of the prefect body and the Year 13, I would like to take this time to ask for forgiveness
from all the teachers, old scholars and all my brothers and sisters for any behavior or utterances
that may have been improper or unbecoming of the role that has been given to me.
Without a doubt, 2017 is a very memorable year for me as it symbolizes the end of a long yet
thoroughly enjoyed chapter of my life. It has been a great privilege and honor to be elected as the
Head Girl of the school. Being a student leader, maintaining discipline and leading by example
was not an easy task but it was a great opportunity and an experience that I will forever cherish.
To begin with, this year as usual demanded commitment and dedication from the faculty and the
prefect body in order to curb indiscipline and mould students into becoming better citizens of
tomorrow. Therefore, I would like to express my sincerest gratitude to all the staff and prefect
body especially our school Head Boy, Brian Seru, our Deputy Head Boys’ Rupeni. T and Samuela.
N and also the two deputy Head Girls’ Ruci T and Claire M, all the House Captains and school
prefects for their cooperation and endless support for without you, I would not have been able to
execute my duties.
In addition, my sincere gratitude goes out to everyone who ensured that discipline was maintained
this year and to those that were good ambassadors of the school. My appreciation also goes out to
all parents for their love and support.
To my form mates (Year 13A), friends (Besties Ono) and to my Year 3-7 besties, I am fortunate to
have you and forever grateful for your support and for making 2017 a memorable one. I am
confident that you have tried your best and that you will leave this school content that all that you
have accomplished. Yes it is hard to say Good bye but I’d like to share that it has been a difficult
journey, but at this juncture , it can be said that I have conquered all my obstacles and now I
stand back to reminisce on what has been a thoroughly enjoyed academic year.
I wish you all the very best. Have a prosperous holiday.
