have to suffer from diseases caused by obesity
and dietary patterns. With the corona situation, we
all had to stay at home in compliance with the
quarantine laws, so many people were interested
in paying attention to their health.

We can learn about weight loss, diet and various
diseases from the internet, but many of them are
based on myths and are inaccurate so we decided
to start a project to make the society aware of this
from the Rotaract community.

Managing Diabetes

Managing diabetes can be challenging. But connecting with people who are navigating the same
condition can make all the difference. “Did you know that diabetes is the 6th deadliest disease in
the world?”

So we, The Rotaract Club of SLIIT wanted to raise awareness and share insights about Diabetes.
"Managing Diabetes with Dr.Uditha Bulugahapitiya" was the second phase of project Fitscape under
Health category. This session was organized in line with World Diabetes Day which falls on 14th of
November, to share insights on Diabetes and know-how to stay safe. Session was held on 6th

Socius’20

An Evening of Fellowship

The pandemic sure did stop all of us from going
out and meeting our friends. But Rotaractors stop
at nothing, we always find a way. Socius’20 was
indeed the perfect solution to reunite and
strengthen the bonds between the club members.
On the 29th of December 2020, we all got together
to find the Club Impostor. Several teams of ten
played ‘Among Us’, via google meet. All the new
and old members made this a great opportunity to
find new friends and make lifelong friendships
through a simple game.

While everyone was spending days and weeks of
gloominess because of the ongoing pandemic, this was
the perfect getaway and the perfect way to socialize
while following all the guidelines and health precautions.
The evening was spent with great joy and of course a
little bit of evil, killing our own fellow members and fixing
a spaceship. We all learnt that the lack of physical meet
ups cannot destroy the bond we have with each other.
Because no matter what, Rotaract will always be one big
family to all of us. Whether it has been years or a few
days since you joined the club, everyone made it feel like
home inside a virtual spaceship within a few minutes.
All of us made joyous memories during the two
continuous hours of fun and betrayal, including the
kicking out of the club impostors. This event was
organized with the hope of improving unity within the
members of the club, which was in fact accomplished at
the end of the day.

Help Her Raise 2.0
Appreciating her the Creator of life

Rotaract SLIIT initiative “Help Her Raise” in collaboration with the Rotary club of Battaramulla is a project
where expectant mothers are encouraged and supported.

One phase of the project was successfully concluded on the 14th of July 2020 at the Dambulla Base
hospital. Despite all the difficulties due to the current Pandemic situation prevailing island wide, our very
own Rotaractors of RACSLIIT together with Rotarians of our sponsor club travelled all the way to
Dambulla putting their own Health at risk.
An expectant mother spends the most critical ten
months of her life by holding another life inside her. She
bears a lot of physical and mental torture patiently just to
witness a newborn crying in her hands. The struggle is
real but is rarely seen by the society. Thus, expectant
mothers are rarely supported and appreciated.

Covering up the Rotary focus area of Maternal and Child
Health, Help Her Raise is intended to reach the expectant
mothers who are truly in need of support for their
mission to be completed. By providing the needed
materialistic and healthcare support for both the mother
and the newborn, the aim is to help the mothers with
economic hardships, till and beyond the delivery. Also, to
ensure a safe delivery for the baby by encouraging
mothers by making their minds happy.

Our dedicated and gold hearted Rotaractors
traveled all the way to Dambulla early in the
morning. Even though the masks on their faces
tried so hard, the humble smiles on their faces
couldn’t be hidden. The generous hope of
giving the mothers a hand was readable on
their eyes.

Being the very first project for the Rotaract
year 2020/21 under the community service
avenue, Help Her Raise was able to mark its
dignity by reaching out those who are truly in
need of help and support. The privileged
mothers were from families who don't even
receive samurdhi. And they also had suffered a
lot due to the cause of Covid. Due to COVID,
many have lost their income which made
buying the essential goods needed for the
delivery a hard mission.

At this phase of Help Her Raise, we the
Rotaractors were privileged to distribute
maternity bags to 105 expectant mothers.
Increasing the numbers from phase to phase
our motive is to help more and more mothers
in the future. Some mothers became
emotional to thank our Rotaractors with
tearful eyes, saying that it was a sacred deed
than just a donation. They even requested to do more such projects and blessed us for a great journey
full of service.

With hearts full of compassion and souls full of satisfaction, our cheerful Rotaractors concluded one
phase of Help Her Raise successfully knowing that they were going to get rebuked as soon as they
reached home.

Rewarding themselves with a steamy cup of Koththamalli and a fully cleansing bath, our determined
Rotaractors closed the first page of the Rotaract Memory book victoriously fighting against all odds as
usual.

Say No to Dengue 2.0

Dengue-free Home

After the pandemic hit the country, many of us steered away from paying attention to other diseases.
It was the rainy season, and all were at home. The breeding spots for Dengue mosquitoes were filling
up with water, and all of us were too occupied by Covid19 and its daily increase of patients to care about
this other deadly disease sprouting in our backyards.

Dengue free home is an initiative taken to create
awareness in the community while making sure that
they are not only informed of what to do but also take
the action to fight dengue. The public community is
constantly reminded of the ways dengue can spread,
and ways it can be mitigated, however there is a back
fall when it comes to the implementation of the
remedial action.

Thus, the Rotaract Club of SLIIT produced the project
where the community is encouraged to make their homes Dengue free. They were asked to
look for places that are potential breeding spots for dengue and take note of them by clicking
photographs. Next, they are to act and clear such areas and take a
photo. These before and after photos were then displayed on the club’s
official pages encouraging more people to act before it is too late.

Members of RACSLIIT as well as members from other clubs sent in their
submissions after finding dengue breeding spots around their homes, and
cleaning or taking necessary action to destroy these sites. We received
some very innovative submissions, where members had thought out of the
box to make sure their home was a Dengue-free Home.

The project was successfully concluded in the second week of August, and

we thank all the Rotaractors who participated in creating a Dengue-free

Home.

Greener Tomorrow

Doing it Today for Tomorrow

“The truth is: the natural world is
changing. And we are totally

dependent on that world. It provides
our food, water and air. It is the

most precious thing we have and we
need to defend it.”

— David Attenborough

Six months ago, life was what we would have called
“normal”, fast forward a few months, the pandemic and
recovery efforts, social distancing, masks and staying at
home have become the new norm. This has given rise to
many nature based downturns and it also affects the social
status of many persons. During the recent quarantines, and
general stay at home orders, nature has taken the
opportunity to recover. Speaking of biodiversity, you may
know that Sri Lanka has a vast tropical forest with
significant biodiversity, and it is one of the top twenty-five
biodiversity hotspots in the world. 27% of its flowering
plants are endemic. Sadly, deforestation is one of the most
serious environmental issues in Sri Lanka. National Tree
Planting Day was established to raise awareness of
deforestation and consolidate efforts to fight it.
Since we were celebrating the National Tree Planting Day
on November 15th the Community Service Avenue of
Rotaract club of SLIIT came up with an outstanding virtual
project called “Greener Tomorrow”.

Under the project “Greener
Tomorrow” we asked the
participants to plant any type of
plant (herbs, vegetables, fruits,
flowers etc.) at their homes. Once
they plant a tree they may also
share the success progress after a
month through social media. By
planting a tree on the National
Tree Planting Day, all participants
got a chance to win their very own
“You Go Green” digital badge.

The main objectives of growing a nice tree in
your lawn are, the increase in the property
value, carry rainwater to the soil instead of
groundwater, boost air quality and provide
shelter for a variety of wildlife. Plus it will
improve the outdoor recreational activities
during quarantine. This project is yet to be
completed with more phases in the future. We
will continue to monitor this into the future and
advice of any changes to National Tree planting
day in 2021.

We acknowledge the commitment and tireless
work of the individuals whose passion makes the
project “Greener Tomorrow” an outstanding
success. We are grateful for your understanding
and for working with us during these uncertain
times.

Voice of Silence

A Bridge to break Barriers

All of us are equal. We all have different abilities to live. The differently abled are not
different from the normal. They have their own capabilities and talents to live their lives.
What should be changed is the mindset of people, the way people look at people and their

different capabilities.

Voice of Silence is an attempt to create
the attitude and spread the message
that we, despite our abilities and
disabilities are equal. The only way to
make this world an equal place is, to be
a voice to the voiceless. The objective
of our project is to let the world hear the
story of them, who live their lives
peacefully in their own ways yet are
differently abled and talented than the
common population in the eyes of the
world.

Our inability to communicate with the deaf community is our own loss. It truly doesn't affect them
or is not a loss for them at all. We, not knowing the sign language do not stop them living their
lives in their own ways. With or without us, they handle their daily hustles. It's us who need to learn
the sign language for us, so we can understand them, communicate with them, bring them to the
light and make them feel that the world is an equal place for all human beings.

We started off the project by sparking a little curiosity
among our club as well as the community. Through a
Public Relations campaign, volunteers were asked to
change their social media display pictures to our Project
Logo, the Equality Sign denoted in Sign language and
also were requested to share our project logo through
their social media accounts. With a ripple effect, many
in the club as well as out were inquisitive on what this
sign meant and what all this was about. The next phase
of the PR Campaign was requesting Rotaractors to post
a photo of them doing the Equality sign. We had a large
number of participants, notably the District Rotaract
Representative Rtr. PP Kasun Sigera as well as the
Rotaract District Secretary Rtr. PP Kayalvili
Mathavaram. A beautiful collage of all the participants,
giving out the message “With Signs may we be Equal”
to the community was created at the end of the PR
campaign.

Voice of Silence is not any regular project, but it is a hope to connect
people together, forgetting our disabilities by embracing our

differences. It is a bridge to overcome barriers and we hope to make a
change within the community so that no one no longer feels left out.

The aim of the first phase of Voice of Silence is to teach the Sign
Language to the community, so that we could communicate with anyone

with a hearing disability. Let us hold our curious thoughts here. Stay
connected to know how Voice of Silence connects the lives by breaking

Barriers!

Before I Die 3.0

In loving memory of those we have lost

2020 is a year that will go down in history as one of
the most shocking years man had to go through.
From forest fires, to riots and the devastating
breakout of the Corona virus, the news did take a
toll on the whole planet. Thus 2020, was definitely
an eye opener to start thinking back and reflecting
on life, especially since everyone was forced to slow
down and stay at home, in a fast-paced world. With
this background, the Rotaract Club of SLIIT
continued the project, “Before I Die 3.0” for the 3rd
consecutive year in the aim of encouraging the
community to reflect on life and realize the things
that really matter.

Before I die is a global art project initiated by the Candy
Changes in New Orleans which uses the walls in the city to
find ways in coping with death and giving meaning to it.
Inspired by this, in 2018 with the help of Hikka Tranz by
Cinnamon, the Rotaract Club of SLIIT was able to put up the
first wall at the Hikkaduwa Beach as a memento for the
victims of the catastrophic Tsunami in 2004.

Under Before I die 3.0, the project was not only in memory of
the Tsunami victims but all the many lives we have lost in the
past. The project took a step back to illuminate the community
and light a lamp in a moment of solitude, especially in memory
of those we lost to the tragedies of Tsunami, the Easter Attack
and the Corona Pandemic. Thereafter, the community was
invited to share their personal wishes while having a meaningful reflection on life, death, hopes and
dreams. Given the situation of being locked at home, the wall where they could write their personal
aspirations was set up by online means. After collecting the thoughts of the public, the virtual boards

which mimic Before I Die walls, were shared across our social media pages. Further, to keep everyone
involved with the project, the campaign continued on Instagram as well by sharing a template on which
one can share the good deed they wish to do before they die, and tag their friends to continue the same.
Before I die 3.0 serves as a reminder on how short and uncertain life can be, thus inviting everyone to
focus and prioritize the things that will give meaning to one’s life. It was able to provide some sort of
comfort to those victimized by the tragedy of losing someone they loved, by trying to fill the void, thus
helping them to cope emotionally and put their mental state at peace. The project done in honor of the
loved ones we have lost, also gives the public a purpose to fulfil and find a way to give back to the
community. Amongst many goals that were shared, “I want to support a child in need for his/her
education”, “I want to build a temple with my own money, that I earned in a good way“, “I want to
donate my eyes”, “I want to donate my hair to a cancer hospital”, “I want to build an animal shelter”-
are some of the highlighted wishes the Rotaractors and the community had shared with us.

In the next phase of Before I die 3.0, the aspirations of some will be made a reality. The team hopes to give
meaning to their life while giving them a chance to make an impact on someone else’s life. Stay tuned.

Rotaract Bestie

An attempt to adore Friendship

Rotaract is a movement with the involvement of the youths
globally. Many join in this movement to volunteer for the
betterment of the society while having fun and cherishing
every moment as a youth. I was excited when I saw the
impactful projects done by some group of youths of my age
and personally wanted to join this movement to experience the
fun and obviously to meet new friends.
There are so many new bonds created by meeting as a stranger
in a strange event and then building up a lifelong friendship.
And there will be times we feel down, but there is a friend who
stands by us supporting to get emotionally and mentally fit to
get along our way. This is the beauty of friendship where we
give without measuring and expect nothing but the strength of the friendship to grow more and
more. The challenges we face as a Rotaractor will surely make us a better people and the opportunity
to make our lives better. But there will be a group of friends to support you and rise above as one,
no matter what.

"A friend is one that knows you as you are, understands where you have
been, accepts what you have become, and still, gently allows you to
grow." – William Shakespeare

Friendship doesn’t have any boundaries. We surely have friends throughout the country and also
friends from beyond the ocean as well. I met some Indian Rotaractors through the project ‘Sentier’,
where we travelled to few iconic places in Sri Lanka and we still have that bond.
The Rotaract Bestie project was organized along with the International Friendship Day to give an
opportunity to the fellow Rotaractors to remember their besties whom they met through this
movement and appreciate them. A capture with their bestie of the best moment they had during
the time in Rotaract with a caption was used to reminisce the memory and the fun during the times
in Rotaract.

Even though we be with the friends we made from Rotaract, there were very seldom opportunities
to appreciate the gems you got. Through the project Rotaract Bestie the opportunity was taken by
many of the Rotaractors from Sri Lanka and around globally as well to show how grateful they are
for their BESTIE.
It was amazing to see how Rotaract has helped to connect people and build friendship despite of
the race, color, religion, or country. And I wish that everyone would be able to build a better world
with understanding among the cultures, where there will be no racism in the human race.

THE WANDERER

About World Tourism Day

“I can’t think of anything that excites a greater sense of
childlike wonder than to be in a country where you are
ignorant of almost everything.” -Bill Bryson-

World Tourism Day is celebrated on the 27th of September each year. World tourism day was
introduced by the United Nation World Tourism Organization in 1980. This year the theme
for the world tourism day was “Tourism and Rural Development”. This theme was mainly
chosen to give an opportunity to the rural areas by moving out of these big cities and preserve
cultural and natural heritage all around the world.

Due to the prevailing Covid-19 pandemic which has affected all the countries
around the world, most of the countries are locked-down as the rate at which the
virus spreading is high. As Rotaractors, we took the initiative to take the message
about Tourism Day virtually to the fellow Rotaractors and rest of the world. We
initiated this project as a joint project with our twin club, Rotaract club of SRM-
Kattankulathur, India, which was an awareness program for travelers by educating
them on world famous destinations and their historical values.

Members from both the Rotaract Clubs, wrote a blog in the last day. Also, we got our very
own members to share their traveling experiences among themselves. Rotaract club of SRM
made a video on those memories to make sure that those will be memorable. Through our
members’ and our twin club members’ traveling experiences which were shared among us we
were able to find beautiful and precious places that are not recognized by people.

People travel around the world with various intensions. Some people travel to have fun, some
travel as they want to know about places and sometimes for the education while others travel
to make money. Do you know that there are so many benefits to a country when people travel
around the world? Did you know these benefits will raise the economy?

Tourism make thousands and thousands of job
opportunities especially for women and youth. For an
example most of the women who live around tourist
places in Sri Lanka make handcrafts and sell them to
tourists as they too need something memorable.
Tourism can develop the infrastructure of a country as
tourism boost the revenue of a country. Countries tend
to develop their infrastructure so they can attract more
tourists. Such as amusement parks, highways, new
airports, improves public space, etc. Not only the above
benefits, tourism has also created a cultural exchange
between local citizens and tourists.

Did you all ever think how to promote tourism in our country? Minimize
the threats from terrorists and make country’s security high so that
tourists do not need to worry about their security. As a country, it
is needed to develop their infrastructure in the way tourists want.
It should be up to a certain level to accommodate world class hotels
and also tourists like to do adventurous activities so the government
can encourage private sector to build amusement parks. Government

can invest on conservation projects so that tourist attraction sites will be
protected. Most of the tourists speak English, French, German or Spanish. If we can educate
local to build the skills to get familiar to few foreign languages, it will be advantageous to attract
more tourists and surely be a factor for economy growth. After that maintaining clean cities
and tourist locations is also needed. No one wish to visit dirty, polluted places. Keeping the
country clean is everyone’s’ duty as citizens of this country so that we can be exemplary to the
world.

STRIDE

REALIZE | REFLECT | REFORM

STRIDE is an initiative by the Rotaract Club of SLIIT aiming to enhance the
personality, confidence and corporate presence of undergraduates around Sri Lanka.
In simpler terms it’s a great “STRIDE” towards brilliance.
Stride is a monumental initiative considering the depth of detail that it attempts to
fulfill. It consists of 3 main phases, each concentrating on core aspects of an individual
or the environment they associate with:

1. Persona Stride – a phase with

multiple sub-projects focusing on guiding
students to build their personality and
market themselves in an appealing
manner to the outside world.

2. Corporate Stride – just like the

name suggests, it aims to mold an
individual to confidently present
themselves to the industry. More
importantly, enlightening students on
how the corporate world operates.

3. Speaker Stride – if you have a look at how this project has been organized,

you will be able to notice an important pattern. First it focuses on your personality
development, then presenting yourself to the corporate world, and finally it
comes down to you becoming a speaker.

Social Daemon

Social daemon being the very first project of Persona Stride had a
remarkable response. The session was conducted by Jency Paul -
Global Graduate Recruitment Specialist at Unilever. The event has held
on the 7th of August 2020 starting from 4.30pm to 6pm, which
immensely benefitted all participants to grab techniques to build their
identity and remodel their social media account; especially LinkedIn.
Jency, being a leading recruiter herself, was able to take us through
the eye of a job recruiter, touching upon points like what they look
into, the small details that can play a significant role and how certain
aspects of a social media profile can be made appealing or how it can
affect you. The session had 80+ participants joining from various
universities around Sri Lanka.

Overall, the session was highly effective and gave every participant an
abundance of knowledge to help them create and build a digital
recognition and the effectiveness was extended with the Q & A session
held at the end of the event.

Corporate etiquette & grooming

Grooming and table etiquette, rather an interesting topic to talk about
was made even more captivating by the presenter- Kumar De Silva.
Kumar De Silva, a leading Corporate Etiquette trainer in Sri Lanka and
also an award-winning television personality, was able to pull a
fascinating session with all the experience and knowledge that he
possesses. This being the 2nd sub-project of Persona Stride, was yet
another insightful session which was sponsored by CIMA, Sri Lanka.
Two back to back sessions were conducted on 2 consecutive days - 6th
and 7th of September. The sessions were highly interactive, where
Kumar De Silva was constantly engaging the audience while also sharing
highly beneficial information. This again targeted undergraduates of Sri
Lanka, attempting to make them aware of what the corporate world
expects from them and the nature of the corporate environment,
specially differentiating the atmosphere of corporate environment to
that of schools and campus/universities.

Personal Branding

‘BRAND’, what is the first thing that crosses your mind
when you hear this word? Nike? Apple? Ralph Lauren?
Now why did not you ‘YOURSELF’ cross your mind? Is it
because you are not a brand? First of all, can a person
be a brand? If yes, then how?

To answer these questions, Rotaract Club of SLIIT
conducted an exhilarating session on personal
branding through the initiative STRIDE. Stride is an
initiative which aims to help individuals develop their
personality, enhance their skills, confidence, and
corporate presence. The session was conducted via
Google Meet on 7th of October 2020 with more than
seventy undergraduates participating from all parts of
the island.

Coming back to the question stated earlier – “Can a person be a brand?”. Yes, personal branding is
definitely a thing, and to enlighten us on this we had a very special personality who joined with us– Fahad
Farook. He is an International Trainer and a certified Transformative Coach and above all an inspiring
personality to thousands of individuals.
The session kickstarted with the moderator Renu Harshatha, 4th year undergraduate specializing in Cyber
Security, giving an overwhelming introduction to the key-note speaker.

Fahad Farook, with all his expertise was able to run us through the significance of personal branding and
everything that it encompasses. He started off the session by diving deep into the concepts of personal
branding and then touching upon pivotal elements that it compromises such as “How to be comfortable
by being yourself.” Afterwards he stepped into a different dimension of “How to behave and dress”. And
finally winding up the session with a strong lesson to take back – “Believe in Yourself”.

Did the session end right there? No, it did not! A fun filled interactive Kahoot! game session was conducted
by Renu. Questions were related to personal branding, specially focusing on aspects that were discussed
during the session. Top three winners were selected out of this and were presented with exciting internet
data bundles. Imesh Balasuriya was able to conquer the first place, while Methmini Kariyakarawana and
Hiru Ihalakorala were able to win the second and third places.

The session was, without any second thoughts, a great success. There was abundance of knowledge being
shared, moments to cherish, lessons to take back and most importantly the word ‘BRAND’ was redefined.

Time management

It is never an easy task to manage one’s time and all that has to be done with the busy schedules
of the modern world. Impatience, indecisiveness, poor performance and poor punctuality are all
reflections that you are struggling with improper time management.
Mr. Pulasthi Panamgama joined with STRIDE on its fourth phase, to enlighten our participants
about strategies and tips to manage time. The session was held on the 2nd of November 2020,
with the participation of over 100 Rotaractors and undergraduates from all around Sri Lanka. The
session which was moderated in Sinhala was conducted via google meet and was broadcasted
live over social media too. Questions that the participants had were collected beforehand and
answered during the session, while opening up for any further questions and clarifications as well.
The value and importance of time management, importance of not procrastinating, strategies to
overcome procrastination, importance of time allocation for aesthetics and family, techniques to
trick one’s mind to harness the best out of the time given and many more such facts were
discussed.

Stress management

On the 20th of December 2020, a Q and A session on Stress Management was conducted in order
to learn the techniques and strategies that could help us cope with stress. This session, which
was held under Persona Stride via Google Meet, had over seventy attendees, who were able to
submit their questions via Instagram and were also able to ask many questions during the session.
We were joined by Ms. Rasini Ayanthi Bandara, a Psychologist working as a mental health care
professional for Mind Heals. She is also a public speaking and personality development coach
under her own brand, LAPS (Learn the Art of Public Speaking). She is a visiting lecturer to First
Friends Campus, Kandy, and she conducts many workshops for school children, university
students, and government and private sector employees. Ms. Rasini’s welcoming and warm
personality created an atmosphere of honesty and safety, which resulted in the participants feeling
comfortable enough to share their personal life experiences.

Although most of the participants had a general idea about the definition of stress, Ms. Rasini
offered everyone a completely new perspective. Any stressful situation that we are in, or any type
of distress that we are feeling, is all under our control. This unique outlook on how we can control
our mindset in order to avoid stressful situations or distressing emotions, seemed to strike a chord
with the participants. This soon became the theme of the session, as Ms. Rasini and more
participants began sharing their own personal “stressful situation” stories. It became apparent
that the common factor and more often than not, the determining factor for how the individual
would go on to deal with the stress, was whether or not they chose to look at life through a
positive lens.

~KNOW IT ALL~

A Knowledge Bank

Do you have that friend who knows a multitude
of random facts? The one you call the Walking
Encyclopedia or the Know-It-All? Have you
ever envied and wished that you could be them?
Know It All is a Public Relations initiative that
hopes to increase the knowledge of our fellow
Rotaractors as well as the community on topics
of various interests as well of the services of
Rotary and Rotaract. The initiative started in
July 2020 and will continue on.

Quizzes are conducted on Instagram using Instagram Stories on the last week of
every month, and they may be about Rotaract, about articles on the RAC SLIIT
blog or on a special day of the month. This interactive approach helped us build
better connections with our Club members as well.

The quizzes on the month of July, August and September focused mostly on the
Rotaract movement. We tested the knowledge of club members on the Avenue
Brandings of Rotaract and the history of the Rotaract Club of SLIIT. We also
had questions on Sustainable Development Goals introduced by the United
Nations, which helped in creating awareness within the community about the
SDGs. Knowledge on the articles published on the blog were also tested,
specifically about Nelson Mandela and his life, World Nature Conservation Day
as well as our Community Service project “Help Her Raise”.

Know It All took a spooky turn in the month of October, focusing on
Halloween. Interesting facts related to Halloween, its origins and phobias
related to it were shared, and the Rotaractors were quizzed on them. We also
had some fun by asking our members and followers to share their reaction of
seeing a spider with us, using a GIF. We witnessed some
brave souls as well as a few Arachnophobes as well.

Taking a break in November, Know It All was back in December full of
Christmas spirits. Facts you did not know about Christmas and its origins were
shared on Instagram and then the members tested how much they knew by taking
part in our quizzes.

That concluded Know It All for the year 2020, and we are glad that this helped
our members broaden their knowledge on the Rotaract Movement and on general
facts too. We hope to see you soon with more interesting and fun facts in 2021 as well!

“Even devils should beware when bargaining with Thanos of Titan”
― Jim Starlin, The Infinity Crusade

.... for a Titan may never be killed, even in his demise in disintegration to dust, his legacy will ever be
immortal. His example ever an inspiration to those that follow. His thirst ever felt by those who seek the
chalice of immortality....
Even years after the era of the Great Titans, Rotaract Club of SLIIT came across the word ‘Titan’ as
Rotaract Club of Pearl Island announced the launch of Titan game series which was based on
community Service Avenue. Where our courageous Rotaractors realized that this is a great
opportunity to show everyone the Titans inside us and leave a legacy with a great service for the
community.

Summit of the TITANS
After the idea was grasped firmly, we the
Rotaract club of SLIIT came up with a solid
team of 27 members who had the grit, skill
and heart to pull off this task. So, the first
ever meet up of the chosen team took
place on 4th of September 2020 at Spar.
After a healthy discussion of two hours the
final plan was made to conquer the Titan
game series.

First Shot at Hunger
Hunger is one of the main issues currently the world is facing.
Therefore in order to fulfill the first two sustainable development
goals the Rotaract Club of SLIIT initiated the project “Hunger
Relief” to serve a hot meal to 30 people living on the street
around Malabe and Kaduwela Area. Titans from Rotaract club
of SLIIT ended their first project on a successful note.

A Hectic Day
With the first attempt being a complete success, Titans of Rotaract club of SLIIT decided to speed up the pace
of their run, launching two projects under time frame of 24hours.

First one was to uplift the literacy of children. The Book
Drive was the initiative undertaken by the Rotaract Club of
SLIIT to help less privileged children discover the sheer
joy and wonder of reading. It was a multi-phased project
whose 1st Phase took place as part of Titan Games on the
6th of September 2020. As the First phase, a total of 50
books were collected from enthusiastic donors. Then they
were distributed among two selected Child development
centers. Vajira Sri Children’s Development Center and
Shilpa Children’s Development Center were selected as
the two beneficiaries from the project. The volunteers
visited each of these locations and donated 25 books to
each Children’s Development Center.

Second project on that very same day was named “Dare
to Care” which was done to educate the public on
protecting themselves and their community from Covid-
19. in this project the team members were given a dare to
be completed to raise the awareness about the basic
safety precautions of Covid-19. The dare given to each
team player was to reach out to the public and spread the
awareness with them. Such as, sanitizing hands
frequently, explaining about types of masks and their use,
maintaining social distancing was the mainly focused
precautionary factors.

To commemorate the World Suicide Prevention Day 2020
Titans of RACSLIIT decided to raise awareness regarding
suicide prevention. A pamphlet was shared targeting 500
students, lecturers, and others in SLIIT. This was also
conducted during the “Let’s Walk & Talk Sri Lanka”,
Suicide prevention walk organized by the Rotaract District
Steering committee RID 3220 in collaboration with Rotary
and the Interact District as well.

Kamikaze

‘Kamikaze’ in other words, "Divine Wind Special Attack Unit", were a part of the Japanese Special Attack
Units of military aviators who flew suicide attacks for the Empire of Japan against Allied naval vessels.
Likewise, A pack of 20 dedicated Titans flew to Galle in order to complete a series of projects.
1. Beach Cleanup – Rethink Trash

This was launched under three phases in order to maximize the impact of the project. First to clean the
Jungle Beach area which happens to be a significant tourist destination in Sri Lanka. Then as the second
phase, dispose of the accumulated waste in a responsible manner. Final phase was to raise awareness
amongst the public of the harm done to the environment due to irresponsible disposal and encourage the
use of more sustainable methods in dealing with waste.

Phase 1 (Jungle Beach)
The members of the Rotaract Club of SLIIT visited Jungle
Beach, Unawatuna, where the surrounding area was
firstly surveyed. Several main sections of the beach and
the surrounding shrubbery were identified as being heavily
littered with garbage. The volunteers separated into
groups and headed off towards each of the previously
identified locations. The large piles of waste were
separated as plastics & polythene, metals, glass and
miscellaneous and packed into separate bags
accordingly. The requisite safety precautions were strictly
followed by the volunteers by wearing face masks, rubber
gloves and appropriate footwear.

Phase 2 (Recycling)
The bags containing the aptly sorted waste materials were
transported to the Thalpe Recycling Center. Care was
taken to unpack the materials to the correct lots at the
recycling center. The owners of the establishment were
briefly interviewed and inquired on the day to day routine
of their small business.

w

Phase 3 (Awareness Program)

Subsequently, the volunteers headed to Galle, where they
split into groups and distributed flyers containing
information regarding the calamitous effects of disposing
PET bottles, polythene and plastics irresponsibly to the
environment. The flyer also contained details enlightening
and encouraging people to follow the principles of
Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

2. Project කැසබ් ෑවා

Sea turtles are ancient species, having been around since the time of the dinosaurs, about 110million years but
unfortunately because of human deeds they have being included to the list of endangered animals. This creature
is a classic example of the wonders of Mother Nature. Seven different species of sea turtles grace our ocean
waters, from the shallow seagrass beds of the Indian Ocean, to the colorful reefs of the Coral Triangle and the
sandy beaches of the Eastern Pacific. While these highly migratory species periodically come ashore to either
bask or nest, sea turtles spend the bulk of their lives in the ocean. World Wild Life Fund work on sea turtles and
specially focuses on five of those species: green, hawksbill, loggerhead, leatherback, and olive ridley.

Over the last 200 years, human activities have tipped the scales against the survival of these ancient mariners.
Slaughtered for their eggs, meat, skin, and shells, sea turtles suffer from poaching and overexploitation. They
also face habitat destruction and accidental capture—known as by catch—in fishing gear. Climate change has
an impact on turtle nesting sites; it alters sand temperatures, which then affects the sex of hatchlings. Nearly all
species of sea turtle are now classified as endangered, with three of the seven existing species being critically
endangered.

While World Wildlife Fund (WWF) is committed to stopping the decline of sea turtles and works for the recovery
of the species, Rotaract Club of SLIIT decided to help the work to secure environments in which both turtles
and the people that depend upon them can survive. Under
this initiative to help Sea Turtle Life we went to Koggala
Sea Turtle Farm and Hatchery to help in protecting these
beautiful creatures by cleaning the homes.

On the 12th of September 2020, A group of 19 Titan
members approached Koggala Sea Turtle Farm and
Hatchery around 1.00pm with the intension of helping
them in whatever possible manner. After speaking about
this initiative with the authority personnel there, we were
asked to help them by cleaning sea turtle tanks and
refilling them with sea water. With that being said our
Titans who were dedicated to this initiative started the
task.

We divided our titans into two teams, one was to clean
the tanks and the other team was to refill the tanks.
After scrapping mossy walls of turtle tanks and toiling
with sea water under the heaty sun for four consecutive
hours we were able to fulfill our goal by cleaning and
refilling the tanks there. After finishing our fully detailed
description about sea turtles were given to us by the
guide coordinator there as he was really impressed
with our effort towards well-being of Sea Turtles in their
farm and hatchery.

3. Faces of Equality

Our last project for that day was done in order to
influence the narrow mindset of people. Faces of
Equality is an initiative to educate people that all human
beings deserve to be treated the same despite their
gender. During the visit to Galle by the Rotaractors of
SLIIT, the pedestrians were educated on this topic
through pamphlets. Interesting ideas regarding this
subject was shared by the people which were useful to
the Rotaractors as well. The Rotaractors believe that
one small step lead to a huge gateway for change.

A Day with Flowers
The project “Wholesome Smiles Innocent Hearts” was a
welfare activity done by the Titans of RACSLIIT with the
hope of bringing smiles to the faces of innocent hearts
at the lady ridgeway hospital, Colombo.

This great community service under the Rotaract focus
area “maternal and childcare “was well planned and
coordinated to bring out an excellent project. The event
was held on the 15th of September 2020 at the Lady
Ridgeway hospital in Colombo, from 4pm onwards. The
rotaractors made sure to follow all health guidelines in
order to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The project
committee spent two days collecting donations for the
children at the ENT ward. The donations were receivcehdildinretnheatfothrme EoNf Tstwataiordn.erTyh, eagdeonaaptipornosprwiaetree troeycseiavend

addressed, to give an introduction about the project. The rotaractors sang songs to the audience while playing
the guitar. The children joined us soon by singing along and clapping to the rhythms. Some of them did not
hesitate to enjoy to their fullest by dancing to their favourite songs. Then the gifts were distributed to the children
by the rotaractors, which was a surprise to all the innocent hearts. The event came to an end around 6 pm.

Millionaires

Money is the core element for projects apart from the
Will, Grit and Heart to carry out community service
initiatives. Therefore, we had to launch a project to
raise funds for our battle of uplifting community
standards. A Bake sale was organized to cover the
expenses for the Titans game series. The bake sale
was held at Lyceum International School, Gampaha.
Team RACSLIIT was able to reach more than 200
students, teachers and parents and raised enough
money through this bake sale.

Extra Tip

While the bake sale was being carried out, A project was initiated with the goal of helping children study
effectively without wasting effort. Several key tips to keep in mind when studying were printed in a colorful card
and distributed among the students of Lyceum International School, Gampaha. These cards had essential tips
like,

• Do not cram – Work daily, do not wait till the last moment

• Take it in small chunks – Do not go for stretched out study sessions

• Make peace with your study place – Keep your study place clean, tidy and pleasant to look at.

• Go more graphical – Use charts, graphs and illustrations
Something for Youth

• Communicate more – Communicate more frequently with your teachers
A seminar session named “Tharunya Nagitinna” was
held for a group of 500 young people to help them seek
a light for their lives. The subject topics that were
discussed and clarified to the youth at this seminar
were: love/relationship problems, unnecessary
addictions (such as alcohol, drugs), lack of purpose for
the future, sex education and failure to recognize the
values of others. This program was conducted by Rev.
Fr.Kalana Peiris and it was held on 17th of September
2020 from 7 pm to 11 pm at the Church of St. John the
Baptist- Nagoda

End of a fourteen day Marathon

After doing projects for 14 consecutive days without a break, Finally Titan game series came to its final stages.
Before going on to the Titan X, team RACSLIIT had to submit their reports, where Secretaries and Editorial
panel did their best to complete and submit those within the given time.

TITAN X

After nailing the final nail on Titan projects, it was time to face the ultimate challenge of Titan X: complete the
maximum number of community service projects within nine hours. To conquer this challenge, hungry Titans
from all around the country gathered to Barracuda Beach on the 19th Saturday. Sharp at 9.00 am as the start
whistle was blown Titans started hunting down projects.

First things First

To start up the projects team RACSLIIT decided to bring peace and harmony SDG to the table. At this day and
age, in over three-quarter of the countries in the world, religious differences have been used as a point of
discrimination and conflict. Thus, the Titans of Rotaract Club of SLIIT proudly initiated "Project One Nation", an
initiative aimed at providing and promoting the essence of the main religions existing in Sri Lanka, held on the
19th of September from 8.30am onwards. This was a significant milestone for all of us since each of us were
either born into or raised up in varied religious backgrounds engraved in our hearts, but the opportunity to visit
other religious places and apprehend their religious procedures and teachings is quite a rare scenario. The
phases of the project were as follows,

• First Phase: Kadiresaran Kovil

• Second Phase: St. Mary’s Church

• Third Phase: Jumma Masjid

• Fourth Phase: Sri Wijayaramaya, Bambalapitiya

These phases articulated the themes of learning and
understanding Hindu, Christianity, Islamic and Buddhism
religious procedures. On this day we saw each individual
coming together as one with the sole intention of
comprehending one another’s spiritual beliefs. The Titans
got together to get to know each religion, spread religious
harmony and they didn’t forget to clean the premises and
contribute in eradication of dengue. They also did a tree
plantation and watered the plants at selected locations.

More into Woods

After completing “ONE NATION” project in style, team RACSLIIT decided to spice things up by carrying out a
rapid cleaning session with regard to “Say No To Dengue” and a physical fitness session for teenage kids. In
the suburban areas of Colombo, the drains get blocked due to many reasons such as heavy rain, accumulation
of sand, poor water flow etc. However, a cause that we can control is the collection of waste and dirt in the
drains. Blocking of drains may lead to severe health concerns as sewages may overflow. Specially, during rainy
seasons,

seasons, when drains overflow, the bacteria from the waste can pose health concerns for people around. The
overflow also causes flooding that can hinder day to day activities of people such as travelling. The titans
gathered at Dehiwala Athapaththu Road and cleaned the drains. The debris and waste collected in the drains
were removed allowing the water to flow without getting hindered. The collected garbage bags were located on
a garbage collection tractor for disposal. Then the physical fitness session started under the project name called
“Stay Fit”

In the current situation, many of us are occupied with work, studies or other day to day work which reduces the
time we give ourselves to take care of our bodies. While being dragged down due to the busy schedules, the
focus to allocate some time for physical activity is reduced. This results in many suffering from heart diseases,
obesity and other illnesses. Not only does physical exercise improve your physical body, but also it’s proven to
improve mental health and moods.

The titans got together with a few teens at the St. Mary’s
Church Ground, Dehiwala for a physical exercise session
to overcome this. First a physical session including the
warm-up exercises were carried out. The session was
headed by one of the athletes in the Titan team. The
teenagers followed the exercises as instructed and
engaged with the team. After the first session, both parties
played a friendly football match to further encourage sport
activity among the teens. The session helped the young
teens to become more active in their lives and also helped
to improve the mental health by making them to be more
focused.

With the end of the third project for the day Titans of RACSLIIT started to feel the searing gaze of the sun,
reminding them about daily wage workers. So, the Titans decided to launch a quick King-Coconut donation for
the municipal council workers.

After the COVID-19 pandemic, many small businesses
and daily wage owners were gravely affected due to the
lack of income. The people faced many struggles in caring
and feeding their families. In an attempt to combat this, the
titans purchased king coconuts from a street vendor and
gave them to the garbage collectors at the municipal
council. This way the street vendor was encouraged to
keep his business running and also got motivated mentally
to continue positively. The workers of the municipal council
are constantly exposed to the sun and thus are prone to
various health issues including dehydration. King coconut
is known for their health benefits and thus was given to the
collectors to quench their thirst and remind them further to
keep themselves hydrated at all times. This will also help
the workers to stay fit and continue with their work in
keeping the country clean.

King-Coconut donation was followed with a Gender
Equality awareness campaign, as many people suffer due
to injustice from gender inequality. The lack of awareness
in the community has increased such cases. By raising
awareness, the community is encouraged to change their
moods and attitudes towards societal change. The titans
collaborated with the Rotaract Club of SRM Kattankulathur
and initiated an awareness campaign - Faces of Equality.
The titans stood on the road side holding boards criticizing
the negative effects of such inequalities. The joint club too
promoted the campaign by sharing the leaflets that were
distributed in the first phase.

Furthering the ever inclusive sentiments of our movement, the TitansX team of Rotaract Club of SLIIT took it
upon themselves to make the day of the children living in Boys Development Center, Pamunuwa. Being a true
example of fellowship, Ceylon Cold Stores PLC (Elephant House) came forth to partner up with Team RACSLIIT
and generously donated several packs of flavored milk packets to be distributed to the children. The project
served in removing the barriers that separate these less privileged children from having a fairly normal life,
reducing the level of financial and social inequality the children experience daily.

To wrap things up with the Titans X, Titans from RACSLIIT
decided to launch a book drive in order to uplift the literacy
of children on probation centers. Because education is the
best gift someone could receive and Knowledge is the only
treasure that could not be stolen. SLIIT Titans donated
books to the children at the Vajira Sri Children’s home,
Kotte and Shilpa Children’s home, Colombo 05. The
innocent children at these Children’s homes are privileged
and provided with all basic needs. But they lack love and
care from their parents. Most of them yearn for company.
The best companion who could provide them company are
books. By donating useable books Titans intended to
share knowledge as well as to provide care to these
innocent souls by providing them good company. After
talking to tthheemmaannaaggeemmeennttaattbbooththCChhilidldrerenn’s’shhoommeess, ,ititwwaass revealed that the children lacked many work books

It was not just the hard work of the five Titans who participated in Titan X, their effort would have gone in vain
without the amazing Editorial panel and wonderful PR team behind them. Because of that at the end of the day
we were able to say “ Hell yeah, this is called ‘TeamWork’ ” loud and proud.

ENDGAME

After toiling under the sun putting their hearts out and their bodies on the line for 14 consecutive days, finally
the Judgment Day for Titans came along. They gathered to Royal Mas Arena with the proud feeling of the work
they delivered. It was quite an epic night where Titans around the Island got an opportunity to enhance their
fellowship with each other while tapping their shoes to the beat of DJ music and glamorous dancing
performances.
After a short while the announcing of title winners started and the Titans from RACSLIIT marked their impact
on the Titan game series proclaiming five title awards. Namely,

• Most innovative and sustainable green life initiative - 1st Place : Rethink Trash 2.0
• Most outstanding coastal cleanup initiative -2nd Place : Rethink Trash 2.0
• Most outstanding digital communication effort - 2nd Place : Dare to Care
• Most number of projects - 2nd Place : 11 projects
• People's choice award - 2nd Place : Project කැස්බෑවා

As the distribution of sub titles ended, the most awaited moment of the night came along. The announcement
of the Titan game series championship winners from 2000+ competitors. Everyone was on their toes with
crossed fingers hoping it will be their team as the host says the name of “Rotaract Club of SLIIT” as the first
runner up of the event. All the rotaractors from SLIIT who participated in the event were over the moon as they
went on to the stage to collect their trophy and the price money cheque from the veteran racer Mr. Dilantha
Malagamuwa and Minister of Youth and Sports Mr. Namal Rajapaksha. Rotaract club of Manipay and Prefects
Board of Hindu Ladies College came in third and first place respectively.
