ROTASIA 2024 The bustling city of Bangalore recently played host to an event that beautifully intertwined the threads of fellowship, cultural celebration, and intellectual discourse Rotasia 2024. This vibrant conference, organized by the Rotaract Club of Bangalore, brought together 108 delegates from diverse backgrounds, all united by a shared commitment to enhancing well-being and fostering global connections. The conference commenced with a warm welcome from the hosts, as participants, dressed in informal attire, gathered to set the tone for an engaging and relaxed atmosphere. The first day was marked by ice-breaking sessions, allowing delegates to forge new friendships and strengthen existing bonds. The energy was palpable, setting the stage for the days of exploration and learning ahead. Day two was a kaleidoscope of cultural pride, as delegates embraced traditional outfits that highlighted their rich heritage. The Sri Lankan contingent, resplendent in osaris for the ladies and sarongs with shirts for the gentlemen, created a visually stunning tableau. This sartorial unity underscored the spirit of camaraderie and shared identity among the participants.

The day also saw the preliminary rounds of the highly anticipated Mr. and Ms. Rotasia competitions. Talent shows, creative performances, and spirited competitions filled the air with excitement and anticipation. The evening transitioned into a lively street food night, where delegates savored an array of delectable local delicacies, capturing the essence of Bangalore's vibrant street food culture. The third day was the culmination of the conference's intellectual pursuits. Engaging discussions, insightful panels, and thoughtprovoking sessions on well-being punctuated the day. Amidst the intellectual fervor, the highlight was the crowning of Lakshmi Rangasinghe from Sri Lanka as the prestigious Rotasia. Her achievement was a testament to the talent and dedication displayed by all participants. After the formalities, delegates enjoyed a well-deserved shopping spree, exploring the local markets and indulging in some retail therapy. The post-conference tour then whisked them away to the serene landscapes of Ooty, the historic allure of Kerala, and the breathtaking beauty of Munnar. In Kerala, the Dutch fort stood as a silent witness to centuries of history, while the houseboats of Alappuzha offered a unique glimpse into the tranquil life on the water.

In Munnar, the delegates visited ancient temples, immersing themselves in the spiritual heritage of the region. A dinner hosted by the local community provided a perfect end to the day's explorations. A ferry ride along the picturesque backwaters revealed the ingenious Chinese fishing nets, a technology that starkly contrasted with Sri Lankan fishing methods. The city of boats, with its charming houseboats, left a lasting impression on everyone. Throughout the conference our club fostered around 20 to 30 letterhead exchanges, intermingling and forging new connections and laying the groundwork for future collaborations. Delegates met and interacted with Rotaractors from many different parts of Asia, including all across India and Nepal, enriching their perspectives and broadening their horizons. As Rotasia 2024 drew to a close, it left behind a tapestry woven with memories of cultural exchange, intellectual growth, and new friendships. The event was not just a conference; it was a celebration of unity in diversity, a testament to the power of global fellowship, and a beacon of inspiration for future endeavors. Rotasia 2024 will be remembered as a landmark event that brought people together, transcending boundaries and creating a lasting impact on all who participated.

WITNESSING HISTORY AT THE RI PRESIDENT'S VISIT! As the PR Director for the Rotaract Club of SLIIT, there are countless events I've attended and stories I've shared. But none could have prepared me for the amazingly experience that was the Rotary International President's visit to Sri Lanka in January 2024. The excitement crackled in the air at the grand Cinnamon Ballroom. Rotarians and Rotaractors from across the island filled the room, their vibrant colors and infectious energy creating an atmosphere of anticipation. Not only was I witnessing a historic moment for Rotary in Sri Lanka, but it was also my responsibility to capture its essence and share it with the world. President Gordon R. McInally's address was truly inspiring. He spoke with such passion about Rotary's mission of "Service Above Self," reminding us young Rotaractors of the immense power we hold to create positive change. His words resonated deeply, reinforcing the reason we dedicate ourselves to community service projects and fellowship.

But the magic wasn't confined to the formal address. The open forum that followed was a treasure trove of insights. Rotaract and Interact members like myself had the incredible opportunity to ask questions directly to the RI President. Hearing his perspectives on global issues, his vision for youth leadership in Rotary, and his own experiences as a Rotaractor was truly invaluable. The entire event was a unique and memorable experience. The Rotarians behind the scenes had meticulously crafted a program that not only engaged the audience but also showcased the diverse work Rotary does in Sri Lanka. From the impactful visuals to the seamless flow of the event, it was a testament to the dedication and professionalism of the entire Rotary family. As the night drew to a close, I couldn't help but feel a surge of pride; not only because of the exceptional event, but also for being part of this incredible journey and a member of the intermingled families of Rotaract and Rotary.President McInally's visit wasn't just a one-off event; it was a catalyst, a spark that ignited a renewed commitment to service within me and countless other Rotaractors present that evening. Walking away that night, my phone buzzed with messages from fellow Rotaractors across the district. Everyone was buzzing with inspiration, sharing their takeaways and eager to translate President McInally's message into action.

However, the night wasn't just about historic pronouncements and inspirational speeches. It was also a night of Rotaract fellowship, and what better way to celebrate that fellowship than with cake? As it turned out, it was District Rotaract Representative Sathma Jayasinghe's birthday! In a delightful twist, the organizers surprised Sathma with a cake cutting ceremony right there amidst the grandeur of the event. The room erupted in cheers and well wishes, adding a heartwarming touch to an already momentous occasion. This experience will undoubtedly stay with me for years to come, a constant reminder of the impact we can create when we come together, united by the spirit of Rotary. The RI President's visit to Sri Lanka was a milestone event, and I feel incredibly privileged to have been a part of it. It was an experience that reaffirmed my belief in the power of Rotary, the potential of Rotaract, and the transformative impact of service. From a PR perspective, it was a crash course in effective communication and event management. But most importantly, it was a night that solidified my commitment to living the Rotaract motto – "Service Above Self."

CLEAN SL On a vibrant morning, Rotaractors from various different clubs across Sri Lanka, banded together and embarked on a transformative journey to Unawatuna for the district event of Phase 03 of Clean SL, underwater session and awareness program. This one-day initiative, held on the pristine shores of Unawatuna, focused on protecting marine environments and raising awareness about the importance of ocean conservation. With the dawn barely breaking, the team set out from Colombo at 6 am, driven by a shared commitment to making a tangible impact on the coastal ecosystem. By 9 am, the group reached Unawatuna, their spirits high and energy levels soaring. The day began with an insightful awareness session conducted by the Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA). This session was pivotal, as it provided participants with crucial knowledge on the pressing issues of marine pollution and strategies to keep beaches clean. MEPA’s experts discussed practical solutions to prevent littering and the long-term benefits of maintaining a pristine shoreline.

The highlight of the session was a hands-on beach cleanup activity. Participants, equipped with gloves and trash bags, scoured the beach, meticulously collecting every piece of debris. This collective effort resulted in the removal of 12kg of trash, a small yet significant step towards restoring the natural beauty of Unawatuna. The sight of the clean beach served as a testament to what community-driven initiatives can achieve. Post-cleanup, the participants engaged in discussions about sustainable practices to ensure the beach remains litter-free. Topics included responsible waste disposal, the importance of reducing single-use plastics, and community-driven efforts to maintain beach cleanliness. The exchange of ideas and experiences fostered a deeper understanding and a stronger resolve to continue such initiatives in the future. The adventure didn’t stop at the shoreline. After the cleanup, the group was introduced to the underwater world of Unawatuna. A snorkeling session allowed them to marvel at the vibrant corals and observe the diverse marine life that thrives beneath the waves. For those keen on exploring deeper, a diving session was arranged. Before diving, participants underwent a thorough briefing on safe diving practices and a trial to assess their physical fitness for the activity.

The underwater exploration was nothing short of magical. The participants admired the intricate coral formations and the colorful fish darting through the waters, gaining a profound appreciation for the marine ecosystems they were striving to protect. This firsthand experience of the ocean's beauty reinforced the importance of their conservation efforts. As the day drew to a close, the group left Unawatuna at around 6 pm, heading back to Colombo with a sense of accomplishment and renewed motivation. The journey back was filled with reflections on the day’s activities, discussions on future projects, and the shared joy of having contributed to a noble cause. Clean SL was not just an event but a movement towards a cleaner and healthier marine environment. It highlighted the power of collective action and the impact of community involvement in environmental conservation. The efforts of the Rotaract Club of ANC and its partners have set a precedent for future initiatives, inspiring others to take up the mantle of marine protection. This day in Unawatuna was a reminder of our responsibility towards the environment and the difference we can make when we come together with a common purpose. It was a day of learning, action, and a celebration of nature’s beauty, leaving an indelible mark on all who participated.
