Introduction

English textbook for primary school grade four is the second in a series of three textbooks
which are currently developed to respond to the new policy of the Ministry of Education on the
reform of general education from 11 years to 12 years. Upon the new educational reform, the
Ministry of Education has decided to include English language in the curriculum of primary school
from Grade three to Grade five, starting in academic year 2009-2010. To implement the new
policy, the Foreign Language Research and Resource Center at the Research Institute for
Educational Sciences in cooperation with the Faculty of Letters, the National University of Laos
formed a team to develop the Curriculum and write textbooks with teacher’s guides. The
development of this grade four textbook and teacher’s guide was financed by the AusAid and Save
Children Norway (SCN).

The contents of the textbooks mainly focus on the illustration base learning. Activities in
the lessons stress four skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing). The objective is to build up
the children’s basic knowledge of English language for their further studies.

Along with the textbook, the teacher’s guide has been provided in order to help teachers
perform their teachings effectively. The teacher’s guide has included teaching techniques of each
step of the lessons. There are also some instructions of using teaching aids and some suggestions
for teachers and students how to create teaching aids for their own classes.

However, the textbook is produced under the time pressure; therefore, some minor errors
could not be avoided. The Foreign Language Research and Resource Centre highly appreciates all
comments and suggestions from textbook users and those are considered as a great contribution to
the quality assurance of the textbooks as well as to the development of the Lao National Education.
