Either way it's an English summer and "we'll weather the weather, whatever the weather, whether we like it or not!" - right? This double, Summer edition of Temespan is needless to say full of an amazing variety of events and activities for the next two months, as well as early notice of some of the upcoming events in September. We received a great end of year school report from Lindridge Primary and Nursery school so take a look at the many and interesting things the children have been learning about over the past year. If you're an outdoorsy type and have time on your hands, then perhaps you might consider taking on the Path Warden vacancy? Oh, and don't forget to contact the folks at Lindridge Village Hall, if you feel able to help with our Loo Appeal. Enjoy the issue, and most importantly, enjoy the Summer!

7 A Ministry of Welcome Archdeacon of Worcester Mark Badger The ministry of welcome is at the heart of the Gospel: it is what Jesus does and teaches us to do. We need to be especially aware of this truth when new people move into the community. They come excited about a new house and new opportunities, but perhaps also nervous and apprehensive about finding their place in a new setting. Welcome and hospitality underpin all mission and ministry in our parishes and most especially in areas of new housing development. A small token of appreciation can make a significant impact on new residents’ experience of their new community. Have you ever though how you might welcome new members to your community? How about saying welcome with a plant? Saying welcome with a potted flower or plant is like sharing a piece of joy that keeps growing! It can be your way of saying, “We’re thrilled you’re here!” and making them feel at home in your community. This little green friend isn’t just any gift; it’s a reminder that just like the plant, their place in the community, and perhaps the church family too, can bloom and flourish in their new home. As a Diocese we have developed a ‘welcome’ pack to help parishes to reach out to new residents and you can find out more on the website www.cofe-worcester.org.uk/news/reaching-thosemoving-into-new-homes.php We can all be involved in the ministry of welcome, helping to build and strengthen community life. Some of us will feel comfortable knocking on a door to deliver a gift of welcome, others may not, but young or old we can all get involved by taking a cutting and nurturing it until it is ready to be given as a symbol of our welcome and love.

9 A Message From Our Vicar Rev. David Morris Dear All, As I write this we are looking forward to going on holiday. In common with many families there aren’t too many times when we can just be together and enjoy one another’s company free from pressing issues. It’s a blessed time of peace which I hope many of you will also be experiencing this year. Holiday is a time of recreation (literally re-creating) when we can do the things that we have little time to do, or indeed enjoy doing nothing at all. In a world that seems to have become increasingly busy there really is something quite splendid, and perhaps counter-cultural, in just doing nothing. It’s the sort of time when we can re-connect with who we really are and delight in how God has made us. It all seems nicely rose coloured and idyllic. But let’s face it there are times when thinking about what to pack (particularly if you go somewhere in this country – do you pack for sun? For wind? For rain? Or indeed for all of these and a few more besides?!?) feels like a big effort, and after that you’ve then got a journey which you might not be looking forward to…so you could be forgiven for thinking that it’s easier to stay at home. If you feel like that there’s a great book from one of the people I admire that can help you. It’s by the late Rabbi Lionel Blue and is called “Sun, Sand and Soul – a little bit of heaven on holiday”. It’s pretty clear from his book that going on holiday for him could be a bit of a chore that turned out to be good once he was there. He had some interesting insights into holidays that are worthy of some reflection: Take a sieve with you on holiday as it helps if you have a row. This certainly is an odd suggestion but the idea is, if you do have a row, you imagine yourself as the sieve and think of God as the water that washes the bad vibes through you and out of you, so that you don’t just forgive but forget what you’ve forgiven. If you are delayed, don’t get angry, there are little goodnesses that you can do that only God sees – like not pushing, passing on

11 The Filling Station your newspaper to someone else to read, etc.. But the best thing to do is listen to other people’s remarks as they can be so funny that they raise your spirit, like: “The hotel meals last year were poison and the portions were so small as well.” As Lionel says, listen to them and feel pleased you are human. Days are scrolls, write on them what you want to have remembered. We all need time for re-creating ourselves whether that takes place in our gardens, in this country or abroad. Let’s all find just a bit of that special time, the bit that’s timeless, and delight in it as we are refreshed and renewed. Let’s call it our Sabbath time. And when we’re on our way back to our routines let’s remember to say a short blessing to God who has watched over us whilst we’ve been re-created: Blessed are you my Creator who has looked after me, and watched over me and brought me safely home. Amen. Love and prayers, DM. Our next meeting of the above will be on Thursday 18th July when Dave Kelly, a church planter and leader, will be speaking to us. We look forward to hearing his message to us. We meet as usual at Eastham Memorial Hall, Eastham, Worcs. WR15 8NP at 7.15pm for a 7.30pm start. Please note that there will be no meeting of The Filling Station in August and so the next date to put in your diaries will be Thursday 19th September when Tim Coles will be speaking. We look forward to you joining us for this evening of fellowship, worship, teaching, and refreshments. 13 Lindridge St Lawrence Church News John Caldwell Following on from recent successful mid-week Holy Communion services at Lindridge Parish Hall, this has now become a regular feature in the Lindridge Church activities schedule. This service is very accessible to people with varying mobility issues because of the access to the hall being on level ground, but it is open to all. The July service will not be held on the fourth Wednesday as is normal, but on the third which is 17th July. Our August service will be on Wednesday 28th but do check the 4Rivers Group Services schedule in this magazine for confirmation or date changes during holiday seasons. Tea/coffee and biscuits are served after the services which gives people time to talk and exchange local news and views. I can also always be contacted on the email address below for you to give views and comments. Zoom prayer meetings continue each Wednesday evening during term time at 6pm. Please join us for this and contact me with your email address so that the link can be sent to you. Choral Holy Communion: It has been decided that 9.15am is a better start time for our Choral Holy Communion services so please make a note of this for the future. There will be no service on 7th July as this has been the date set for the annual deanery service, which will be held at Hartlebury Castle at 10.00am. Our next service of Choral Holy Communion will therefore be on Sunday 4th August. Please note the new start time of 9.15am. Tea/coffee and biscuits are served after this service to which all are warmly welcomed. John Email: [email protected]

17 News from Lindridge Nursery The children at Lindridge Nursery had a really exciting visitor. Steffan came to school and showed us lots of different animals. We met cockroaches, snakes, an owl, a skunk, a lizard and a dragon. The children were very keen to touch and hold the different animals and listened carefully to Steffan as he told us about them. These first hand experiences are crucial to help the children learn about the world and make connections which is at the forefront of our ethos. • Teacher Led Nursery • Play Based Learning • Fantastic Forest Area • Qualified, experienced and caring staff • Wrap around care • Open to children aged 2-5 years • Funded and non funded places available from 2 years Contact us now to arrange a visit: 01584 881466 or [email protected]
18 Welcome to a roundup of our academic year as we near the end of 2023-24 at Lindridge St Lawrence Primary School and Nursery. It has been a busy and exciting year as we begin celebrating our 130th Year Annivesary. In Hedgehog class [Reception age 4 and 5 years] we have had a wonder- ful year exploring and learning. We started the year learning all about ourselves and how special we are before further exploring the amazing world around us. The children especially enjoyed our topic on animals where we researched the life cycles of different animals such as butterflies and caterpillars. In the photo you can see how the children created the life cycle of the butterfly in our class tree which we change depending on the seasons. We have had lots of opportunities to explore our expansive outside area which has allowed our children to develop their investigating skills and their confidence with trying new challenges. This half term we are learning about traditional fairy tales such as the Three Little Pigs and Little Red Riding Hood. We are going on a class trip to Wonderland so the children can see the houses from our fairy tales and meet the characters in our stories. This topic will allow the children to develop their imagination by writing and telling their own stories using our puppet theatre and the craft area to create their own settings and characters. We are lucky to have such an amazing school team and are excited to see what the children will achieve through their Lindridge St. Lawrence Primary School and Nursery 2023-24
19 school journey. Mrs Murphy In Otter class, [Years 1 and 2, age 6 and 7 years] this year we have been busy exploring both inside and outside the classroom. We started the year off learning about Mary Anning and making our own fossils and learning about ferocious a n i m a l s in Africa. We have been lucky as a class to have a whole afternoon each week, rain or shine to explore and learn in our forest school area. In these sessions we have investigated the different materials used around our school and junk modelled different modes of transport to test and trail in water and on string ziplines. Otters have had several dressup days this year, coming as their favourite characters from a Roald Dahl book character, as a superhero and in their pajamas. They also have one more in this last half term where they will be dressing up as interesting insects. Otter class also travelled to Hereford Cathedral this year and had an exciting day learning about the different parts of the cathedral as well as making brass rubbings and stained-glass windows. It has already been a very busy year for O t t e r class full of new adven - t u r e s and we are excited to see what this last h a l f term has in store! Miss Morris. Packed full of fun, learning, and exploration, this year in Squirrel class [Year 3 and 4, age 8 and 9 years] has been very busy! Beginning the year with an investigation into the American continent, and ending it with a close examination of the United Kingdom, Squirrel class have been up to all kinds of exciting things. Our children have been hard at work over the last year, covering a vast range of topics, from the Anglo Saxons, the Vikings, a geographical study of Europe, and
20 a an incredibly interesting study of our local area. Our school has stood for 130 years, and we have been celebrating across the year – and still have more cele b r a t i o n s to come! Last term we had a fantastic visit to Noverton Farm, which was a beautiful place where the children were able to learn all about the running of a local farm. We also had two special visitors, Leon and Jess, who are our local archaeologists at Ludlow castle. They brought in all kinds of fascinating finds for the children to look at, discuss, and handle. This term we are very excited to be taking part in the leaver’s assembly, ‘Treachery at Traitor’s Quay’. We are teaming up with the year 5’s and 6’s to make a production of a musical that involves our children taking on the role of villagers in a World War 2 themed village. This links really nicely with our 130-year history as a school, and we’re uncovering all kinds of interesting facts about our family’s histories as we go! We’ve had such an exciting year in squirrel class, and still have a fab half term left! Mrs. Henwood Helm Looking back over our year together in Fox class, [Years 5 and 6, age 10 and 11 years] it appears that we have been incredibly busy! Our children have studied a wide range of topics; including WW2, The Titanic, the Victorians and the incredibly interesting history of our school over its 130 years. During these topics we have taken part in several trips (RAF Cosford pictured) and hosted lots of exciting learning events. Our children have also shown themselves to be fantastic performers! We took part, for the first time, in the Young voices concert in Birmingham during which we joined a choir of over 6000 children. This was a fantastic eve-
21 ning that allowed our children to take part in something they can be truly proud of. Our key stage two children are also currently preparing for our summer production “Treach - ery at Traitors' Quay”, a musical production that sees our children take on the roles of Villagers in a World War 2 themed village. A new addition to our year 6 children’s responsibilities this year has been our “Peer mentor” scheme. We appointed 4 children who are ready and able to look out for the younger members of our school, helping them in any way they require to ensure their school life is as happy as possible. Oh, what a year it has been! And still one exciting half term left! Mr Pickford As you can see it has been a great year at Lindridge Primary with celebrations, visits and visitors. Our half termly Praise Celebrations along with our annual Harvest, Easter, Christmas and Leavers Services at St Lawrence’s Church and our weekly Godly Play sessions, supported by the church community have made for a n o t h e r s p e c i a l and memo r a b l e year. Our Friends of Lindridge S c h o o l [ F O L S ] have cont i n u e d to support us with activities and treats; a Pantomime, movie nights, discos, pop-up shops, ice lollies Fridays and lots more. We are looking forward to our upcoming ‘Art Festival and Kiddies Car Boot’ on Saturday 13th July at 10am and continuing our 130 Year celebrations over the 2024-25 academic year and would like to welcome everyone in our Teme Valley community to join us. We wish you all a lovely Summer. Mrs Amanda Greenow-Langford Head Teacher

28 Would You Like To Spend a Penny........or Several? Lindridge Parish Hall desperately needs your help! The problem is, we need to replace the flat roof over the toilet and we need your help to raise the funds to make this happen. We have always tried to keep money in reserve for maintenance issues but we are now faced with a large unexpected cost of over £6,000 to replace the flat roof of the toilet, which will exhaust most of our funds. We have a thriving village hall which caters for the needs of the local community and surrounding area. There are a variety of activities covering fitness, creative arts, games nights and bridge most weeks and then films, quiz nights on alternate weeks, and of course the monthly Saturday morning breakfasts. We are one of the few village halls that has a weekly Youth Club and Toddler Group. On average we have over 100 people visiting the hall which is a great achievement. The hall was built in 1910 and numerous people have given freely of their time on committees over the years to keep the hall in good condition and providing modern facilities while retaining its unique original features, and always operating within a limited budget. We try to keep the cost of hiring the hall as low as possible so that it is available to all. Needless to say, with rising costs, especially on LPG fuel and electricity, our cost base is under significant pressure. The purpose of this notice is to acquaint everyone with the situation and to establish if any of you would be willing to donate money to a fund that we hope will keep the hall in top condition to serve the community. Please contact a member of the hall committee to donate or if you would like more information. PH: 01584-881747 Email: lindridgeparishhall@outlook. com Thank you. Richard Rainbird-Hitchins
29 Menith Wood WI At our last meeting Sally Dickson gave a very detailed, visual account of the history of Bewdley, Tickenhill and The Mortimers. Her talk was full of fascinating local information and helped us understand the deep connections our area has with the monarchy across many centuries. Our D-Day afternoon tea held on June 8 at Lindridge Parish Hall was a great success, bringing together members, guests, and people from the community to commemorate the occasion. The Parish Hall looked amazing with its Union Jack flags, bunting and flower arrangements, and many people entered into the spirit of the 40s era dressing appropriately. Land girls, Pvt Walker from Dad’s Army, and Michelle from ‘Allo,‘Allo were present and added to the atmosphere. Music from the time was played during the afternoon whilst we enjoyed our tea. Thanks to all our members for their contributions towards the food, raffle prizes and setting up of the hall, and to all who came along to support this event. A donation of the profits from the tea is to be given to the Royal British Legion. We also held a litter picking afternoon in Eardiston on June 10 as part of the Climate Coalition’s Big Green Week, tackling climate change, and to protect and restore nature. Armed with high viz tabards, litter pickers, disposable gloves and rubbish bags, 5 members walked round the village in an attempt to make our village an environment to be proud of. Our next meeting will be on Monday July 1, our garden meeting, when we will be visiting Lower House Farm, Sutton. 33 At 10am on Sunday 28 July 2024 the gates of Stokesay Court will open for a fun-packed day for dogs and their owners and admirers at the start of the tenth anniversary of Ludlow Dog Day. Held in the beautiful grounds of Stokesay Court, situated approximately 6 miles north of Ludlow and just off the A49, the day is all about fun for the whole family, particularly our furry friends. Dogs can take part in over 21 competitions, from the scruffiest mutt and waggiest tail to the cutest puppy. There are have-a-go events including dog agility, flyball, and hoopers, while gun dogs will be able to demonstrate their ability to retrieve…or not! Demonstrations throughout the day include past favourites such as the Paws for Thought Display Team and Bliss Gate Dog Obedience Team alongside All Positive Dog Services with hoopers, loose lead and learn a trick and scenting training. As well as the doggy events, there will be plenty of stalls to enjoy whether selling dog and country related goods or pampering to human needs such as the food stalls, the drinks bar, and the popular tea tent. Money raised in past years has enabled Ludlow Rotary to distribute over £140,000 amongst a wide range of charities and community organisations. The club plans to use this year’s event to support ‘Ludlow Rotary Cares’, the club’s community grants scheme, as well as other deserving causes. Enjoy a wonderful day in a glorious setting while supporting numerous community and charitable needs. For more information: www.ludlowdogday.org.uk.

44 On Sunday 12th May St Andrew’s opened its doors to an unusual clientele. Billed as “The Blessing of the Animals”, this was Christine Clarke’s latest imaginative Sunday worship, created especially for our community in Stockton: a pet service. I have to admit to a little anxiety beforehand: how would we keep cats, dogs and small furry or feathered creatures safe and separate from each other? We need not have worried. Stockton, it turns out, is a very doggy place indeed, and the animal congregants were one hundred per cent canine. And, it turns out, St Andrew’s is ideal for keeping Labradors, a Poodle, a couple of Cockerpoos, a pair of Greyhounds and a fabulous Pointer under control, with its eighteenth century linenfold panelled box pews coming into their own as makeshift pens. It was all excellent, innocent fun – a chance to celebrate and give thanks not just for our own pets, but for all of God’s creatures, and their vital part in the earth’s eco-systems. Prayers drew our attention to the work of animal charities, among other animal matters. We enjoyed the story of Noah’s Ark, and some spirited hymns such as “All creatures of our God and King”. I look back on the service with gratitude and poignancy. Pets Aloud! St. Andrews Stockton
45 Our beautiful, beloved greyhound, Ivy, became unwell the week that followed, and was put to sleep six days later. We are glad she was there. Kate Harley gardening Club visits July & August We are indebted to Elva once again for arranging visits to two fascinating gardens. The first is on Wednesday, July 24th. The venue is Warndon Court Garden W(just off J6 of M5 ) The owners have been developing this garden for the last 12 years; their aim being to match the elegance of the historic house and combine this with a family garden. The soil is heavy clay, and they are aiming for all year round interest. Topiary is a particular feature, (the dragon presently resembles a rabbit apparently!) Roses do well, hence the timing of the visit for July. The second outing is to Rhydd Gardens, on August 28th. Here we can explore not one, but two walled gardens, a 60 foot greenhouse and also enjoy a nature walk and woodland, all with views of the entire Malvern Ridge. This venue is a 40 minute drive through Callow End, to the south of Worcester. For both outings we will meet at Clows Top Victory Hall at 6pm, so that we can share cars. To book, or for more information, call Elva on 01299 832288. May the weather be with us! Clows Top Gardening Club

49 Remi Harris and Tom Moore Knighton on Teme Parish Rooms At first glance, Knighton on Teme Parish Rooms might appear a little ..uninspiring?..but on entry, especially when there is a great evening of music to contemplate, it becomes a very special venue indeed. June 6, was just such a night when The KOT Parish Rooms hosted local musicians Remi Harris and Tom Moore with their eclectic mix of Jazz and Blues. After a minute’s applause to commemorate the 80th anniversary of our brave lads who were involved in the D-day landings, the duo, Remi (guitars) and Tom (double bass) kicked off their fantastic set. First up was a wonderful rendition of Fats Waller’s “Honeysuckle Rose”, followed by a haunting track called “Embers” and Arthur Johnston’s “Pennies from Heaven”. Remi then upped the tempo by interchanging his battered (Rory Gallagher edition) Fender Stratocaster and Gibson Les Paul to play some Jimi Hendrix followed by Peter Green’s Albatross, with Tom Moore’s Double Bass underpinning the melody of Remi’s artful playing. Whilst the rest of us were being mesmerised by the brilliant musicianship on show, Jan Spilsbury had been hard at work in the kitchen and managed to serve delicious, curry dishes (with fresh coriander picked from her garden) to the fifty plus guests. After the interval Remi and Tom ripped it up with some fantastic Jazz and Blues classics, followed by a selection of Remi’s signature Gypsy Jazz music, including an original composition that he wrote to play at the prestigious Django Festival in Portugal. The audience whistled and called for an encore, and the evening ended in a standing ovation, and by the look on their faces, both Remi and Tom appeared to have enjoyed the evening as much as the audience. Remi and Toms' playing is a minor marvel of poetic grace and structural economy and their interpretation of tunes using tempo, punctuation and the blending of instrumentation into tight co-ordination, results in a controlled, vibrant energy, without ever getting too heavy. Their knowledge of Jazz and Blues is vast and the way they interpret and improvise those tunes is magnificent! If you love your music and have yet to see Remi and Tom perform, then I would strongly recommend that you check out his tour program for this Summer. You can find Remi on Yardbirdarts.com.
