These lovely sunny harbingers of spring are such a welcome sight at this time of the year and bring a joyful spot of colour to cheer up these (hopefully) last grey days of winter. Lots of daffodils in this, our Easter issue, as the flower has become the symbol of renewal, new beginnings and hope that we associate with Easter and springtime. And this issue is bursting with all kinds of events and opportunities to get out and about and enjoy what March has to offer, both here in the parish and further afield. So take a few minutes to browse through and make a note of important dates for your personal calendar. Enjoy! all th b e c o m e

7 Choral Mattins, the sung service of morning prayer, was the main Sunday service in my childhood parish church – the place where I first felt called to the ordained ministry and where my spirituality and faith were shaped and nurtured. Many memories come back to me when I think of my time in the choir, but as Lent journeys on I particularly remember that one of the canticles sung in the service changed: the Te Deum, the great ancient hymn of praise, was retired for the season in favour of the Benedicite Omnia Opera – a fabulously named canticle for a child to ponder. It is an exciting musical expression of praise for creation encompassing everything from the ‘sun and moon’, ‘fire and heat’, ‘dews and frosts’, right the way through to the more exotic and bizarre praises for ‘the fowls of the air’ and by far the best for a child to sing, ‘o all ye green things upon the earth, bless ye the Lord’. During the seasons when the church was stripped of flowers and colour, when we were giving things up, and paring things down, it was a joyful and playful thing to sing these words every Sunday morning in Lent. Lent is often talked about as if it were a challenge to be beaten, a marathon of demands for us to prove a point. Spiritual disciplines and denials do have their place but not as an end in themselves but as a way of stripping away the distractions that prevent us ordinarily from seeing the glory of God at work around us. The playful words and images of the Benedicite were all the more wonderful because they were sung in a season otherwise without colour or vibrancy. I pray that these 40 days will surprise us with new and living understandings of the God who calls us, not to dullness, but fullness of life. 9 An Easter Message Rev. David Morris Dear Friends, I’ve just been for a bike ride out through the floods in the Teme Valley and in this season where we’re thinking about new life it’s hard to imagine the farmers having an easy time growing crops – please keep them in your prayers. But new life will come and that’s what we celebrate with the risen Lord Jesus at Easter – it’s the hope that lots of parts of the world are desperately looking for now. However, the thing that really struck out on my bike ride was the sheer majesty of the water. There was lots of it, sometimes in great volume and flowing with immense power. Sometimes it was just making itself know tumbling down streams and culverts. Sometimes it was running off the fields and running down the road in a way that was not going to be stopped – on one part of the route it really was like cycling up a river. The main thing though was that it was everywhere and in everything. In Jesus’ world, running water was always seen to be powerful expression of the Holy Spirit. Here was something that was unstoppable and found its way wherever it wanted to go. Certainly that was something that I was experiencing! Think of it this way though, the Spirit really is in everything, it is everywhere. Sometimes we might be lucky enough to experience with great force but very often it is just there and working away if we can just stop and recognise it. And it’s present in all parts of the Rural Mission Area where are sorts of things are happening and are to be celebrated and acknowledged. This Easter may you receive just the sorts of things you look forward to. But let’s hope that we are all filled to overflowing with the Holy Spirit (even if we have to wait for Pentecost to fully celebrate that in church) that we feel inspired to do things to follow in Christ’s footsteps. It might start with simply phoning someone or indeed giving away one of the many chocolate eggs that fill our homes. Whatever it may be for each one of us, may it be filled with love. God bless, DM.

11 Message From Our Local MP Harriett Baldwin We are blessed to live in a wonderful area where we have great employers, great schools, and, as important to those moving to the area, low levels of serious crime. I was elected on a pledge to recruit 20,000 more police and West Mercia Police Crime Commissioner John Campion has put this pledge into effect locally. Over the last three years, 330 additional police have been recruited and trained. West Mercia Police now has 2496 officers – that’s the highest number ever recorded. You regularly tell me that visible policing is very important to you in our town centres - Pershore, Malvern, Upton-upon-Severn and Tenbury Wells - as there are occasional instances of anti-social behaviour. I went out on patrol with Pershore police to see the challenges for myself. I am pleased to hear that their visible policing patrols, as well as some targeted plain clothed officer investigations, is delivering results, with anti-social behaviour down 44 per cent after a 73 per cent increase in interventions in Pershore. Rural crime is an issue which is regularly raised by farmers whenever I meet them with equipment theft occurring far too often. It’s another issue that PCC John Campion has been focussing on and I am hopeful that more resources can be allocated to detecting and prosecuting offenders. Speeding is a key issue, particularly in rural West Worcestershire and alongside the work of the county council and the Safer Roads Partnership, I am keen to see police monitor and enforce speeding across the area. The busy A46 continues to be raised with me, both on the doorstep and in my post bag but also a number of rural communities have recently written sharing concerns about speeding and how to make their own roads safer for road users and pedestrians. The national Crime Survey picture is reassuring - since 2010 violent crime is down 51 per cent, neighbourhood crime is down 48 per cent and theft is down 46 per cent. While every instance of crime is troubling, I am confident that West Mercia Police is doing the best it can to keep you safe and secure.

13 On Boxing Day 2023, it was reported on internet news channels that major supermarket stores had already started to sell Easter Eggs! They claim it is by public demand. Now, I don’t wish to cast aspersions on our commercial cousins, but even in my pre-diet chocolate loving days, I didn’t buy chocolate three months in advance – Easter is at the end of March, not the end of December! You see Easter, like Christmas appears to have two images; the secular with its chocolate eggs, and the religious which is all about the resurrection. But, do these two images have to be completely separate? Humans have understandably, always seen eggs as symbolic of fertility and birth. It is believed that Easter eggs can be traced back to Christians in ancient Mesopotamia, being symbols for new life, new beginnings rooted in the resurrection of Jesus. In Britain in the Middle Ages the eating of eggs during lent was banned. However, chickens didn’t stop laying eggs during Lent, so this began the practise of hard boiling eggs and decorating them to share with family and friends on Easter day. The first hollow chocolate egg was introduced to Britain in 1873 by the company Fry’s. In 2023 it is estimated that approximately 80 million Easter Eggs were purchased in Britain, with 76% of adults associating chocolate eggs with Easter. That is a lot of chocolate! For Christians, Easter is the single most important time of the Christian Calendar and we celebrate our belief in the resurrection of Jesus through a variety of services. Throughout Lent we have our Lent Groups, as well as reflective times of Stillness and Peace. Palm Sunday we have services with processions and hymns. Maundy Thursday, a Holy Communion reflecting the Last Supper of Jesus with the 12 Apostles. Good Friday, the day on which Jesus’ crucifixion is observed, we have ‘Stations of the Cross’ and reflective worship. Easter Saturday, an evening Easter Vigil with cheering and a joyful noise. Easter Sunday Holy Communion in several churches, and an Easter Garden Experience along with our Easter Egg hunt in Stockton. 15 are later in the magazine, on our church noticeboards and website. Just as spring plants often struggle to pop their heads up through the cold soil of passing winter, when humans wish to refresh our lives, to seek a new way, we may also struggle to know how to take that first step. May we in 4Rivers Churches this Easter time, offer you that first step, come along and join us, and see what it’s all about. However you celebrate Easter this year, please know that your Church families in 4Rivers hold the wellbeing of all people in our communities, in our hearts and prayers. Have a blessed and happy Easter and know that you are loved by God. If you wish to contact 4Rivers churches contact details will be on Church noticeboards. Church office email: [email protected] Church office phone: 01299 575055 Website:4rivers.church “I beg you, bear with one another in love” The World Day of Prayer is an international, inter-church organisation led by women from around the world. A service is created each year by the women of a particular country, which enables us to share their hopes, concerns, and prayers. The Day of Prayer is celebrated in over 146 countries, beginning in Samoa, and prayer in native languages then travels all around the world ending 36 hours later in American Samoa. The services take place on the first Friday in March which this year is Friday, March 1st. Here in the 4Rivers group we have been joining this “wave” for many years with a service in one of our churches. We are planning to hold the service this year in Great Witley Parish Church at 10.30 a.m. It has been prepared by the women of Palestine who will have written it so long before the tragic and traumatic events which are engulfing their homeland. This makes the theme of the service “I beg you, bear with one another with love” even more poignant. The Christian women of Palestine are calling us to connect with the land from which Jesus came and are sharing with love a reminder that they are there and will not give up witnessing to his love. Although the service is written by women, men are also invited to take part and everyone is welcome. Please come if you can. World Day of Prayer Service at Great Witley Church Friday, March 1, 2024 at 10.30 am a.m.

18 News from Lindridge Nursery One of our favourite stories this term has been ‘Each Peach Pear Plum’ by Janet and Allan Ahlberg. The children enjoyed trying different fruits which were growing in the orchard where Tom Thumb was hiding. When we looked at the page with Mrs Hubbard we discovered that her cupboard was empty so we made yummy biscuits which we enjoyed munching at snack time. The children made binoculars and used them to look for characters from the story when we went for a walk around the school grounds. The Nursery has some spaces for 2 and 3 year olds, please contact us if you would like to visit. If you have a child turning 2 before 1st April 2024 then you can now apply for 15 hours free Nursery funding which are accepted at our Nursery. You are welcome to come and visit the Nursery or to find out more then please contact the school office for more details: 01584 881466 or [email protected]

29 SCOTLAND COMES TO KNIGHTON There was rather a feel of the Highlands in Knighton in January, as we celebrated Burns Night in the Parish Rooms. Everyone made an effort; there was a lot of tartan visible with many kilts, some genuine ones complete with sporran and Sgian Dubh; and some rather more improvised, possibly leaving some home dining tables short of their cloths! The evening started with the Haggis being piped in around the tables and then presented, followed by the Selkirk Grace. It was then served together with the traditional neeps and tatties, and there was even a vegetarian version of the Haggis. After supper we were treated to a splendid display of dancing by the Tenbury U3A Scottish Dance Group, led by Dr Jane McIntosh. After this fine example it was time for everyone to join in and a full Ceilidh followed. What a splendid evening for all, including the Sassenach English as well as the Welsh and Irish contingents. Special thanks must go to Sheila Bragger, and Jonathan and Jan Spilsbury, who were able to do all the delicious cooking on our splendidly re-equipped kitchen with its new large cooker and dishwasher. We are very grateful to them for organising such an enjoyable evening, and we are all really looking forward to next January.

37 The March 27 meeting is our Spring Show, when part of the Hall is full of cheery spring flowers waiting to be judged. Guaranteed to lift the lowest spirits! Our speaker this month is Darren Rudge; an old friend of the Club. (Who could forget his previous talks “Teabags, Bras and Tights” and “Colour and Interest in the Garden.”) Darren is an horticulturist with 30 years experience. He has been a BBC broadcaster for 15 years; was an assistant director at Birmingham Botanical Gardens, and currently runs a garden design business. The subject of his talk this month will be “Low Maintenance Gardening” A topic which I am sure will be of interest to everyone. He does encourage full audience participation, so be prepared to join in. As usual there will be a flower of the month competition, and a magazine swop.
