Dear Readers: As I write this brief column with the rain yet again pouring down after those fleeting few days of sunshine in early May, I wonder if my vision of summer that I hoped to convey on the front cover, is in fact just a phantom of my imagination. Well, ever the optimist, I'm holding out for lovely warm weather to enjoy time in the garden with a bowl of strawberries - and maybe a glass of Pimms - and also plenty of sunshine to help us enjoy all the great events we have to look forward to locally over the coming weeks. As you'll see, among the many event notices, this issue contains details of the Lindridge Summer Show in August, which is always a popular event in the community. Check out the various categories if you would like to compete this year. There are all sorts of happenings taking place, in Stockton, Knighton on Teme, Eardiston and Menith Wood, so take a few minutes to peruse this month's Temespan and plan your outings for the coming weeks. Enjoy!

7 Diocese News Bishop John to Retire Bishop John has announced that he will retire in October Bishop John was enthroned as the 113th Bishop of Worcester on 1 March 2008, coming here from the Diocese of Ely where he was Bishop of Huntingdon. As Bishop of Worcester, he has been the Chief Pastor for parishes across Worcestershire and Dudley as well as serving in the House of Lords since 2012 and as Lord High Almoner to HM The Queen and then HM The King from 2013. Bishop John will withdraw from ministry in mid-September with a farewell service in the Cathedral at 4pm on Sunday 29 September, to which all are welcome. His retirement will then formally come into effect on 9 October. He said: “Being Bishop of Worcester has been an enormous privilege. By the time I leave I shall have been here nearly 17 years, the longest I have lived anywhere in my life. I have lived through the best of times and the worst of times in my personal life during those years and am more grateful than I can say for all the love and support I have received. I am not anxious to retire – I am deeply attached to Worcestershire and Dudley and love being Bishop here! However, I shall be 70 in February and feel, under God, that now is the right time to leave.” Following Bishop John’s announcement, the process will begin to find the next Bishop of Worcester. This will be led by a small group of people from across the Diocese as well as from the national church and will involve wide consultation with those in our parishes. During the vacancy, the Bishop of Dudley, Martin Gorick will become Acting Diocesan Bishop. Further information on the process for selecting the next Bishop of Worcester will be available shortly. Bishop John will be retiring to Wiltshire with his wife H-J ColstonInge.

9 A Message From Our Vicar Rev. David Morris Dear Friends, I’ve been out cycling this week (which in itself is not particularly newsworthy) and as usual found myself in the Teme Valley. The hills over here are far more challenging than where I was previously which is a good thing for fitness if not tiredness! I find that in this area as I’m slowly hauling myself up the climbs that my mind starts to wander. Recently, rather than thinking about performance, or what was about to come next, I found myself thinking about Rabbi Lionel Blue. He’s someone I have admired greatly but he was not exactly the epitome of performance-enhancing motivation. When he was on Radio 4 it was clear that he was basically a frail old man but with an immense ability to be observationally funny. Simultaneously he was imbued with a real down to earth understanding of God that sadly with his passing he will no longer be able to share with us on Thought for the Day. But the more I thought about it, and the more the hill went up, the more I thought that in many ways in the current climate of Celebrity Culture we’ve lost the joy of realising just how great ordinary people can be. I don’t know if you remember the programmes on Britain’s Greatest Generation (they’ll still be available to stream somewhere) but they highlighted just how remarkable ordinary people can be and we’re impoverished if we forget the everyday people that bring real meaning to our lives. The prophet Joel might not be too familiar to some but he summed things up this way: Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old people will dream dreams, your young people will see visions. Let’s celebrate the fact that our old people will dream dreams. Let’s listen and share one another’s stories. Without that we have little vision and we are consequently poorer. Ordinary people really are quite extraordinary and that’s something we should thank God for. God bless you all. DM

13 Lindridge St Lawrence Church News On April 27, 120 people gathered at St Lawrence Church for "A Lovely Afternoon Concert", and if you were not one of them – you missed an absolute treat! Pupils from Lindridge St Lawrence CE School and Abberley Parochial VC Primary School performed lovely songs, The Church Choir performed six songs and some very talented individuals sang all sort so songs and played instrumental solos (including three from the Schools!). The concert ended with audience participation singing So long, Farewell…from the Sound of Music and then rousing renditions of Land of Hope and Glory and God Save the King. Refreshments were served in the School afterwards, including some delicious home baked cakes. Admission was free as the Church put on the event as part of its work in the communities, but a total of just over £325 was received in donations. 19 Mud Run for June On April 24, Cameron and Oliver Rainbird Hitchins, took part in the Eastnor Castle 6km Mud Run 2024. Due to their fantastic effort and everyone’s generosity, they have raised approx. £550 to fund new playground equipment for Stottesdon Primary School. This will provide the children with a safe and enjoyable space to play, whilst fostering their physical and social development. Congratulations and well done to Cameron and Oliver!!

20 This year’s weather has kept us all on our toes, and with the relentless rain we have had the inevitable floods on the “Woodston” roads. The Parish Council is working towards trying to avoid the usual scattering of vehicles that make their way into the flooded roads, getting stuck and causing the road to be closed for debris clearing. We feel better signage at appropriate points along the preceding road would help give drivers an alternative route. While this seems quite a simple thing to action, getting all the governing bodies working together is a slow, slow, business, but we continue to lobby for action. Hopefully, before next winter, something will be sorted. The planning application in Eardiston by Eden Homes is progressing through Planning; the Parish Council has worked with the developer who has suggested a few of our ideas which have had a degree of success. There is also a small development at’ Lambswick Farm” which is currently in the [contd/..p 25] Lindridge Parish Council Chairman's Annual Report Judy Thomas

We had a good turnout with a congregation of over twenty. The Service was taken by Mark Wild; but before that his wife, Kym, enchanted us with some beautiful harp music; she also played at the end of the Service before the serving of coffee and biscuits. We particularly like to do this as it allows people to talk together which helps to encourage the community spirit. Our thanks must go to Mark and Kym for making the Service so special. We will be having this service on the fourth Sunday in each month until September when we will review the attendance and hope to make this a permanent feature at Knighton. Matins at Knighton

40 Vespera is Chloe May’s third album and the first of purely solo piano works. The project was inspired by her dormant track “Free the Mind” which came together and led to the composition of the rest of the album. Vespera means “Evening Star”, beautifully evoked by the lyrical melodies that characterise each track and are heard through the album, transporting the listener to a place of freedom, rest and relaxation away from the hustleand bustle reality of day-to-day life. Chloe May Evans is a local composer and multi-instrumentalist from the Teme Valley, former soprano in Queens’ Cambridge Chapel Choir and University Chamber Choir, one part of Kindiva, and composed “The Holy See Gets it” for artist Ian Wolter, awarded the Arte Laguna Performance Prize, Venice Italy, 2016. You can listen to her music on platforms including Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, Deezer and YouTube. Latest album released by local artist Teme Valley South Churches Choir(TVSCC) Music in the parish We are passionate about bringing choral music back into our rural parish churches and bringing people together. Our next Evensong service will be: 4pm St Mary’s Church, Stanford, Sunday 2nd June There will be cake and refreshments after the service too and we would love to see you there. 43 Menith Wood needs your help In the early 1990’s, the residents of Menith Wood formed a Community Association to buy the dilapidated Old Chapel Hall, raising sufficient money through extensive fund raising and grants. A contract of sale was signed on 7th December 1993. The Association went from strength to strength, raising funds to refurbish the hall and build an extension. It continued to thrive over the years, with events often oversubscribed. Unfortunately support for the hall and its events is now dwindling, with lack of carparking an issue, and the expansion of activities at local village halls. To date, we continue to meet regularly, and organise social events. We have a monthly coffee morning, an annual plant sale and book sale, a very successful evening of Carol singing, supported by our local junior school, and a lively Christmas party to mention but a few. The hall is available for hire, and used by local parish councils, The Trustees of the Millenium Green, the WI, and is used for private functions. Following grants made available from MHDC Covid funding, the hall has new heating and lighting, the clock tower has been renovated and a new clock installed. We now have double glazing and a lovely bespoke wooden front door. Due to retirements, after our AGM in October we will no longer have a chairperson or treasurer, and we are looking for local residents to join the committee to bring new ideas and ensure the Association continues to thrive. Unfortunately, failure to encourage people to join us will mean that the Association will cease to exist, and the Old Chapel Hall will no longer be managed. If you’d like to join us or would like more information, please email: [email protected] or give me a ring on 01584 881744 Thank you. Sharon Sanders

44 Menith Wood WI Our meeting in April saw Avril Pulley speak to members about her working life as a flower maker in clay at Royal Worcester and then in sugarcraft. She demonstrated with the air drying clay she now uses, showing different types of flowers, their colours, and how to combine them together. She had brought along handmade flower cards which were available for members to buy. Our next meeting will be on Monday 3rd June when Sally Dickson will be speaking to us about “Bewdley, Tickenhill and The Mortimers”. This will be held at Old Chapel Hall, Menith Wood – 2.15pm for a 2.30pm start. We are looking forward to our next fundraising event which is an afternoon tea on Saturday 8th June at Lindridge Parish Hall celebrating “D-Day – 80yrs on”. See advertisement inside back cover. As part of the Climate Coalition’s Big Green Week commitment to tackle climate change and protect and restore nature, Menith Wood WI members will be undertaking a litter pick in Eardiston on Monday 10th June – 2.30pm outside Lindridge Parish Hall. On a similar note our annual meeting in May was followed by a “Swishing” event which involved a small donation of money to swop items of clothing or accessories with others in an attempt to encourage us to re-use these things instead of simply discarding them. Visitors are always welcome to our meetings, and if you would like further information about us and our future programme then please email [email protected]
