JHS Mix It Up A nti-Bullying Club Visits the Elementary School by Sarit Adler
This week, The Mix It Up A nti-Bullying Club members gave lessons to the elementary school students. The
first, second, and third graders were read stories about bullying. The fourth and fifth grades were shown a
PowerPoint presentation, along with a video and song related to bullying. After viewing the PowerPoint
and a discussion, the fourth and fifth grade students wrote their thoughts on two anti-bullying quotes that
will be displayed in the Junior High School building as a reminder. When students were asked, they all
enjoyed the program and learned a lot from it. The Mix It Up Anti-Bullying Club will continue to include
the elementary school in their programs. Thank you to Mrs. Maisel for organizing such an important event.
Special thanks to the students that gave their time to work with the elementary school students: Ariella
Miles, Talia Cohen, Tani Lichtman, Eli Dykman, Kerenna Klein, Sarit Adler, Siggy Orenbuch, Zachary
Rosenthal, and Zach Samuels.

Rebbe-Talmid Basketball Game

Last Friday, April 5, the Rebbeim of YCQ took on the Varsity Basketball Team. This
event has been long awaited by the faculty and students. Was the Varsity Team going to
avenge the loss from last year? Are the teachers going to be the reigning champs? These
questions were finally answered when both teams faced off on the court. With all of the
efforts made by the students, it wasn’t enough and the Rebbeim came out with the win.
Even with the loss, the Varsity Team said it was a great and competitive game. This
game has become a loved tradition at YCQ and everyone involved was excited to be a
part of it!

Torah Bowl Championships
The Torah Bowl Tri State Area Championships were played in Brooklyn on Monday. For the
second time in as many years, the YCQ Boys Torah Bowl team advanced to the Championship
Round of the Torah Bowl playoffs. After securing a double bye for finishing the regular season a
perfect 12-0, they advanced to the finals where they battled in a tough best of three series with
Ramaz to claim their place in history as Southern Division Champions. Although the boys were
Southern Division Champions, they could not get past the powerhouse YNJ (Yeshiva of North
Jersey) in the Tri State Area Torah Bowl Championships. The boys were asked one hundred
questions on the entire Sefer Shemot with Rashi. However, they simply could not keep up with the
“fast paced offense” run by YNJ. The girls team also had an incredible season finishing up the

regular season as the number two
seed. However, that did not stop
them from upsetting the Yeshiva
of Flatbush and taking back the
Southern Division crown.
However, they could not keep up
with the Kushner girls team in
the Championship round. We
look forward to building on the
most successful two year run in
YCQ Torah Bowl History.

Until next year!

Class 4-304 to Satmar Matzah Bakery
This past Tuesday, Rabbi Soffer’s fourth grade class went on a trip to
the Satmar Matzah Bakery. Students had the opportunity to observe
the genuine and intense Matzah baking procedures. They saw
everything from the special water that sits overnight, to the
kneading of the special shmura flour, all the way to the completion
of the Matza. Additionally, they learned the halacha of taking away
a portion of the dough after baking. Special thanks to the
chaperones including Mrs. Cohen, Mr. Nagorev, Mrs. Khaimov, Mrs.
Greenfield, Mrs. Mossiyev, and Mrs. Koptiev.

Eighth Grade Trip to Meet Author Irving Roth
On Wednesday, the eighth graders visited Mr. Irving Roth, a Holocaust survivor who
wrote the memoir, Bondi’s Brother. Mr. Roth spent time interacting with the students
and inscribed numerous copies of his book. Students were given the opportunity to ask
Mr. Roth questions about his life and experiences. The eighth grade students toured
Mr. Roth’s Holocaust Museum to learn more about this tragic time in our Jewish
History. It was a very inspiring and moving experience.

Science Lab with Mrs. Jaffe
The first and second grade students have been learning about engineering in lab-science. They
learned about bio-mimicry, how engineers study things in nature, like birds than design things
that help make our lives easier, like airplanes. They are now learning about simple machines by
using different simple machines as well as building a pulley system and using it as both a zip-line
(inclined plane) and as a pulley to move objects from one location to another with minimal effort.
The students also talked about different types of engineers who design, build and test things to
make our lives easier and better. Their favorite of course, was the food engineer; who wouldn’t
want to have a job testing new food combinations, especially ice cream flavors.
