THE YCQ VIEW!

12 IYAR 5782 PARSHAT EMOR BY RABBI LANDSMAN
UPCOMING EVENTS
Candle Lighting: 7:45 p.m. A recurring theme in Parshat Emor is the incompatibility of the
Havdallah: 8:47 p.m. Beit HaMikdash and Tumah. The Kohanim, those designated to
serve in the Beit HaMikdash, must refrain from contact with a
YCQ FAMILY NEWS dead body which constitutes the highest level of Tumah. Although
Mazal Tov to a regular Kohein does defile his sanctity to bury his immediate
Morah Michal Binyaminoff relatives, the Kohein Gadol, whose bond to the Beit HaMikdash
On the Birth Of a Baby Girl is greater, is prohibited to defile himself even under these
circumstances.
Mazal Tov to A Kohein is prohibited from serving in the Beit HaMikdash in
Morah Osnat Fried a state of Tumah. Even a person that is not a Kohein must be
On the birth Of a Grandson tahor when entering the Beit HaMikdash or eating korbanot. The
complete separation between the Beit HaMikdash and tumah
Mazal Tov to requires that even terumah, the holy food of the Kohein, and
Morah Malka Bart ma’aser sheini, the tithe eaten in Jerusalem, must be preserved
(ES Assistant Teacher) in the state of taharah. Why is tumah the antithesis of the Beit
On Her Engagement HaMikdosh, thereby requiring scrupulous care that anything
To Tzvi Nash associated with the Beit HaMikdosh remain tahor?
Rabbi Tzvi Sobolofsky, Rosh Yeshiva, Yeshiva University explains
Mazal Tov to that all forms of tumah are linked to a loss of life. The highest level
Mia Aranbaiev (6G2) of tumah is linked to the most profound loss of life, the death of
On Her Bat Mitzvah a human being. Dead animals also emit tumah, albeit to a lesser
degree. Even the loss of potential life such as when a woman
Mazal Tov to becomes a niddah is associated with tumah.
Shira Katri (6G2) According to the Ramban in the beginning of Vayikra, the primary
On Her Bat Mitzvah purpose of bringing a Korban is a reaffirmation of life. One who
sins deserves death according to the strict rules of justice.
Mazal Tov to Hashem in His mercy wants us to offer an animal in place of
Talia Shalomoff (6G2) ourselves, thereby reminding us that it is the kindness of Hashem
On Her Bat Mitzvah that grants us another opportunity to live.
The Beit HaMikdash and everything surrounding it represents the
Mazal Tov to gift of renewal of life. Tumah, which is synonymous with death,
Elisheva Shutzman (6G1) has no place in the Beit HaMikdash. The Kohein who serves in
On Her Bat Mitzvah the Beit HaMikdash must be a symbol of this renewal and have
no association with the loss of life. The message emanating from
Mazal Tov to the Beit HaMikdash is clear: come back to Hashem, begin your
Aviel Babaev (7B1) life again, and celebrate this renewal in a state of holiness and
On His Bar Mitzvah taharah.
Shabbat Shalom
Mazal Tov to
Donny Faigen (7B2)

YCQ EARLY CHILDHOOD

From Caterpillars to Butterflies In Early Childhood

The children in YCQ Early Childhood are busy monitoring changes. What kind of changes? Why,
caterpillars to butterflies, of course. Right now each class has a container with caterpillars in it.
Every day they check to see what is happening to them. The classes are counting the days until the
caterpillars go into a chrysalis, and are charting each day. They will count the days until they emerge
as butterflies and chart that information as well. In the end, the children will not only have watched
the metamorphosis take place, but they will know exactly how long it took. Once the beautiful
butterflies emerge, we will set them free!

Grade 3 Visits The Rose Center for Earth and Space

Grade 3 brought their solar system literacy unit to life with a trip to the Rose Center for Earth and
Space. All four third grade classes boarded buses to the city for a visit to the stars! We were so
excited to see how much we would weigh on other planets, and watched a quick video about
Black Holes. Some of us even touched a real, giant meteorite! When we finished, we took the glass
elevator up to the Hayden Planetarium dome to see the show, “Worlds Beyond Earth.” The students
were in awe of the 87 foot diameter sphere, and the comfy seats that surrounded the giant projector.
When the lights went down, we were treated to an awe-inspiring show that took us on a trip to
see the planets and moons in our solar system. Our visit took us to the surface of Saturn, Jupiter,
Mars, and Venus. We also had a visit to Titan, one of Saturn’s many moons! After a picnic lunch, we
returned to YCQ (conveniently located on planet Earth!). We learned so much about the planets in
our solar system. I hope that this trip serves as inspiration to the future astronauts, engineers, and
scientists among our students. We know the future holds great things for all of them!

Mrs. Etta’s Sneak Peek of the Week at the Library

Monster has a lot of needs! He needs his sleep, but he is afraid of the dark. He needs a spectacular
party - preferably a super cool pirate party! And, he needs our vote - even though he isn’t old
enough to be president! Paul Czajak’s Monster and Me series was the subject of this week’s library
sessions with Kindergarten and Grade One. Students were treated to a story about monsters with
good natures rather than beastly ones. They drew their own monster, each one named for its own
unique qualities. Perhaps Paul Czajak, whose visit is scheduled for May 25, will decide which
monster will be a good match for the one he consistently wrote about in his books?
The Grade 4 boys were challenged to identify the difference between popular “Myth” and “Truth”
when introduced to MYTHS Busted: Just When You Thought You Knew What You Knew, by Emily
Krieger. Many of the affirmations have been around so long that they have been widely accepted as
“fact,” but were proven to be false! For instance, while the majority of the boys asserted that bats
are definitely blind, it was found that bats hunt mostly by echolocation. Next week, the question is
whether the fourth grade boys can stump Mrs. Etta with their own astounding claims - myth or fact?

YCQ Wildcats Girl’s Soccer Remains in Yeshiva League Lead with Win!
By Rebecca Sisser (8G1)

Yeshiva of Central Queens (YCQ) hosted North Shore Hebrew Academy (NSHA) for an intense
soccer game. Rebecca Sisser, Shira Canter, and Hannah Nisanov all scored two goals each. Starting
defenseman Sarah Leah Sullivan and Shira Dishi kept NSHA at bay most of the game with their
suffocating defense. YCQ was leading with a few minutes to go, but a late goal by NSHA tied the
score 6 – 6. After a scoreless overtime, the game went to a sudden death penalty kick shoot out.
Goals by Rebecca Sisser, Tehila Betzalel, and Becky Feygin made the game winning save to seal the
victory. With this win, YCQ remains first place in the league with a 6 – 1 record.

ANNOUNCEMENT

YCQ Appoints Rabbi Rohr to ES Assistant Principal of Judaic Studies Position

It is with great pleasure that we announce that Rabbi Joshua Rohr will
join our Administration as Assistant Principal of Judaic Studies for the
Elementary School, effective July 1, 2022.
In selecting Rabbi Rohr, the Search Committee, as well as the YCQ
Board of Education and Board of Trustees, were particularly impressed
by his dedication, energy, and passion for maintaining high standards
of academic excellence and warm relationships with the entire school
community.
Rabbi Rohr attended HAFTR Elementary and High School. After studying
for two years at Yeshivat Sha’alvim in Nof Ayalon, Israel, Rabbi Rohr
earned Smicha Yorah Yorah and a BA in Psychology from Beis Medrash
L’Talmud/Lander College for Men. He received his M.S. in Jewish
Education from Yeshiva University Azrieli Graduate School for Jewish
Education and Administration.
For the past fourteen years at YCQ, Rabbi Rohr has firmly established
his commitment to Jewish education and Torah learning. He currently plays several important roles at YCQ:
Director of Curriculum Development of Judaic Studies Grades 1 – 8, Grade 5 Rebbe, and Junior Varsity
Basketball Coach. He served as a curriculum developer for the Consortium of Jewish Day Schools. His
reputation for developing Judaic curricula, especially in Chumash, his pedagogic excellence, as well as his
ability to foster warm relationships with his students and their parents, are defining aspects of his career.
“His achievements demonstrate that a career at YCQ transforms faculty into highly qualified and talented
educational leaders, thanks to the mentorship that they receive from Rabbi Landsman and the entire YCQ
educational community,” stated Rabbi Michael Ribalt, current Assistant Principal of Judaic Studies. Rabbi
Rohr contributed significantly to the authorship of the Lehavin Ulehaskil Chumash Curriculum for Sefer Shmot
with the Consortium of Jewish Day Schools, which is now used nationally. During the pandemic, his calm,
caring demeanor provided a sense of stability and consistency, easing the communication between our
students, parents, and faculty.
Rabbi Ribalt, who has been chosen as Head of School for Rabbi Pesach Raymon Yeshiva (RPRY), is working
closely with Rabbi Rohr to ensure the seamless transition and continuation of initiatives he developed for
YCQ. This includes the Lehavin Ulehaskil Program in Grades 2 – 5, a uniform Ivrit/Yediot Klaliyot curriculum in
Grades 1 – 4, and a Kriah department developed with a focus on an individualized experience.
The search process that concluded in Rabbi Rohr’s appointment was an extensive and thoughtful one. The
committee advertised widely and brought many candidates to our campus for face-to-face interviews. We
appreciate all the numerous, outstanding candidates for their interest in YCQ, and for taking the time to meet
with us. We thank the members of the Search Committee, including YCQ administrators, teachers, members
of the Board of Education, and parents, for their time and effort.
Because of his established connection to our school and community, we expect Rabbi Rohr’s transition to be
a smooth and successful one, indicative of YCQ’s bright future. Please join us in congratulating Rabbi Joshua
Rohr and wishing him many more years of success in his work on behalf of the Yeshiva of Central Queens.
Dr. Joel Wein, President
Mr. Israel Glaser, Chairman, Board of Trustees
Rabbi Mark Landsman, Principal
Mrs. Ora Verstandig, Chair, Board of Education, Search Committee
