UPCOMING Parshat Chayei Sarah By: Rabbi Landsman
EVENTS
This week's parsha contains the story of the purchase of the Maarat HaMachpela and
Candle Lighting: 5:52 the burial of Sarah Emainu. The Mishneh in Avot says that Avraham experienced ten tests,
Havdallah: 6:51 which are listed or alluded to in the previous two parshiot. According to most commentaries,
the commandment to sacrifice his son Yitzchak was the tenth and final test. According to
Tues., Oct 29 most opinions, Avraham reached the apex of his spirituality when he passed that test.
Picture Day
Grades N-5 Rabbi Yissocher Frand quoting Rabbeinu Yona, in his commentary to Pirkei Avot,
disagrees. Rabbeinu Yona lists the incident in this week's parsha related to Sarah's burial as
Wed., Oct 30 the tenth and final test. The fact that Avraham has to buy a burial plot for his wife from Eph-
Picture Day JHS ron, in the land promised to him by HaShem, constitutes the tenth and final test. Avraham
8th Grade Parents successfully passed this test when he had no complaints against HaShem concerning this in-
cident.
HS Night 8PM
Rabbeinu Yona's opinion is based on a Gemara in Bava Batra 15b which puts the fol-
YCQ Family News lowing words into the mouth of the Satan: "Master of the Universe, I have traversed the
whole world and found none so faithful as your servant Avraham. For You told him 'Arise,
Mazal Tov to walk through the land to the length and the breadth of it, for to thee I will give it' and even
Mordechai so, when he was unable to find any place in which to bury Sarah until he bought one for four
hundred shekels of silver, he did not complain against thy ways."
Balakhaneh, and
Josh Babayev, on It is difficult to explain this Rabbeinu Yona. It certainly does not seem to fall into the
their Bar Mitzvah! same league as being prepared to sacrifice one's son to the Almighty.

Tzetchem L’Shalom One of the approaches to explain this difficulty is to give a "baseball analogy". There
to Mrs. Samantha is a difference between a regular game and the final game of the World Series. When a per-
son knows that "this is it crunch time!" he may be able to conjure up within himself great
Naymark our reservoirs of strength. When a person knows that he is on the spot, he can sometimes act for
transportation a short time, on a supreme level that far surpasses his normal capacities. When Avraham was
Coordinator on her given the command to take his son and go with him to Har HaMoria, he sensed that this was
upcoming Aliya to a big test. With that sense of the drama of the moment, he gathered in his entire spiritual
Eretz Yisrael! might and power of concentration. The adrenalin flowed and he rose to the occasion.
Welcome to our new
transportation The incident with Sarah's burial plot was just another day of the week. He was faced
Coordinator, Mrs. with this distressing situation in a moment when he was not expecting a test. The adrenalin
Liron Friedman. She was not pumping. There was no voice in his head telling him "It is 'nisayon' time this is it!"
can be reached at

718-793-8500 x 330 nature to some extent even beyond what might be demonstrated in a test such as 'Akeidat
Yitzchak.'

Have a great Shabbat!

SPOTLIGHT ON NEW FACULTY

My name is Mrs. Marjorie Wein, and I am the new 6th grade Language Arts teacher. I have taught at many
academic levels and in several subject areas during my years of teaching, and this informs my current
interdisciplinary approach. It is a pleasure to return to YCQ this year in my new capacity, having taught
Social Studies in the middle school several years ago. I am enjoying getting to know the dynamic and
capable 6th graders as we embark on our adventures in reading and writing. As the parent of two current
students and three proud graduates of YCQ, I feel privileged to now be part of the energetic, warm, and
collegial environment that distinguishes YCQ.

Eighth Grade Visits the 9/11 Memorial

On October 16th and 17th the eighth grade students went on a very important trip to the
9/11 Memorial in lower Manhattan. Mrs. Rosenberg gave each group of students the name of a
victim and the students researched the victim prior to the trip. The students were handed an im-
pression kit, which consisted of parchment paper and black crayons. The students made an impres-
sion of the name of the deceased. Many people who passed by saw the work the students did and
were very impressed by the students’ knowledge and interest in such a monumental and historic
landmark. Very special thanks to Mrs. Rosenberg and Mrs. Golubtchik for the hard work they put
into this special program!

Kindergarten and Nursery Visit Green Meadows Farm

This past week the kindergarten students went to Green Meadows Farm to see
many animals first hand. The children got to feed and pet a llama, donkey,
goat, cow, rabbits and much more! They rode on a hay ride and on ponies, as
well as saw a ventriloquist show, with a puppet. The children had an amazing
time and had a chance to experience animals up close!
