YESHIVA OF CENTRAL QUEENS
David and Toby Reich
guests of honor
David was raised on New York’s
Lower East Side until his family moved to
Kew Gardens Hills in 1974. David attended
Manhattan Day School, Yeshiva Dov Revel,
Yeshiva University High School and Ohr
Torah Institute in Forest Hills.
Toby grew up in Deer Park, Long
Island and attended the Hebrew Academy
of Suffolk County and the Hebrew Academy of Nassau County.
Toby and David met in Israel when they were both there for
the year after high school, he in BMT and she at Bar Ilan University.
They both attended Queens College where Toby also got her Master’s
Degree in Speech Language Pathology in 1988. David graduated
from Cardozo Law School in 1991.
Toby has been evaluating and treating children with speech
and language difficulties for over 25 years. Toby founded and ran
a full service therapy agency that served pre-school and school age
children in public schools and yeshivas, including Yeshiva of Central
Queens. Now Toby works in private practice and with children ages
0 – 3 in the New York City Early Intervention Program. She is also
an adjunct lecturer at Queens College where she teaches a senior
level course in the undergraduate department of Linguistics and
Communication Sciences and Disorders.
David worked at Deloitte & Touche as a tax consultant and
then worked with his father as an attorney in private practice before
becoming a legislative counsel in the New York State Senate, first
for Senator Emanuel Gold and then for Senator Seymour Lachman,
where he was instrumental in passing legislation requiring every
school in New York State to teach a course on the Holocaust. David
then worked with Toby in her therapy agency for almost ten years.
David has a private legal practice focusing on real estate, wills and

estates and general corporate matters. For the past few years, David has
also been working as general counsel for Custom Care Concierge in
Great Neck, NY.
David is President of the Young Israel of Kew Gardens Hills,
where he has been successful in obtaining government funding for the
youth department and for security projects. He has been a board member
at Yeshiva of Central Queens for the last decade and is always available
to do legal work and counseling for the yeshiva. David is also involved
in a number of other not-for-profit and community organizations.Toby

serves on the Young Israel’s Youth Committee.
Toby and David have three children: Jonathan, 27, Jennifer,
23 and Allison, 20, who graduated from Yeshiva of Central Queens
in 2004, 2008 and 2011 respectively. Jonathan works for a medical
supply company. Jennifer will be graduating in May with a Masters
Degree from Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health
and Allison is finishing her second year at Hunter College’s Macaulay
Honors Program. She has recently become engaged to Kevin Wolf of

SCHOLARSHIP DINNER - MARCH 11, 2018
YESHIVA OF CENTRAL QUEENS
Michael and Evelyn Schussheim
keter shem tov
Michael & Evelyn Schussheim are gratified by
their family’s extensive, half century relationship with the
Yeshiva of Central Queens. Michael, the son of the ven-
erated and widely admired RIETS Rosh Yeshiva, Rabbi
Zelo Schussheim ז”צל, and the ebullient Mrs. Sheilah
Schussheim ז”ל, was raised locally in Kew Gardens Hills.
He graduated from YCQ’s Jamaica campus in 1972. His
wonderful wife, Evelyn, is the daughter of Wolf ז”לand
Lena Peck, intrepid Holocaust survivors who met and
married in Israel, where Evelyn was born. During the
early nineteen sixties, the Pecks opted to join other fam-
ily members who lived here in the United States. They
settled comfortably into the Pelham Parkway neighbor-
hood of the Bronx, where the large Jewish community embraced many thousands
of Holocaust survivors.
Michael and Evelyn are both products of the City University of New York,
having earned their degrees at the Bernard M. Baruch College and Queens College
respectively.Michael obtained a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) majoring
in public accounting while Evelyn received a Master of Science in Education (MS)
with a concentration in nutrition. Michael has devoted much of his professional life
to public service, becoming the comptroller of Rockville Centre, Long Island at the
tender age of twenty-nine. He was the recipient of numerous budget preparation
and financial reporting awards. He lectured frequently about municipal affairs and
politics, particularly relishing his interaction with students of all ages and back-
grounds. Michael currently heads a successful real estate tax consulting firm based
in Cedarhurst. Evelyn has enjoyed a lengthy career as a much-respected registered
dietitian nutritionist at Long Island rehabilitation nursing facilities. Her warm and
endearing personality has made her a very potent professional in her field. She has
also served as a perspicacious guide to many young, newly educated dietitians.
The Schussheims have long been active in the Jewish community. Michael
served for eight years as the treasurer of Congregation Bais Medrash of Cedarhurst
where he worked closely with his widely esteemed rebbe, HaRav Dovid Spiegel
Shlita. He recently entered his thirteenth year as a member of the prestigious
Lander College for Men Board of Overseers. Evelyn has served as the president of
the Sisterhood of Congregation Bais Medrash. She also spent four years serving on
the Parent Council of Stella K. Abraham High School for Girls. The Schussheims
have previously been honored by both Yeshivat Sha’alvim, where their two sons were
post-high school students and Hatzalah of Far Rockaway & the Five Towns.
Michael and Evelyn are extremely proud of their beautiful family – Justin
and Alyssa Schussheim, Eli and Marin Herman and Zachary. Justin, a dentist by
profession, is a popular YCQ basketball coach and mentor to sixth grade boys. Alyssa
is a beloved Tanach Morah to girls in the junior high school. Justin and Alyssa have
four children, three of whom are currently students in YCQ. Eytan, Tamar and
Michal are members of YCQ’s fourth, second and first grade classes. Their youngest
child, Yehuda Yosef, is presently attending pre-school. Eli Herman is an industrious
audit manager at KPMG LLP while Marin is a highly regarded second-grade teacher
at Yeshiva Darchei Torah in Far Rockaway. They have four children, Akiva, Bayla,
Zevi and Sruli. The Schussheim’s youngest child, Zachary, is a third-year student at
Rutgers School of Dental Medicine.
SCHOLARSHIP DINNER - MARCH 11, 2018
YESHIVA OF CENTRAL QUEENS
Avi and Shelly Peretz
parents of the year
Avi and Shelly both grew up
in the Petach Tikvah area of Israel,
where they were educated in the local
mamlachti dati schools. Avi attended
a special high school which provided
students with technical training in the
operation, repair and maintenance of
helicopters, after which he served in
the Israeli Air Force. Upon completion of high school, Shelly enrolled
in Sheirut Leumi, where she spent a year as a mentor and caregiver
at a religiously-run home for children from dysfunctional families.
Subsequently she took a job in the precious stones industry.
Arriving in the U.S. in 1991, Avi became involved in real
estate, eventually starting his own business which includes sales,
rentals, and maintenance. Upon arrival in the U.S. in 1993, Shelly
continued to pursue her career with diamonds. When the couple got
married in 1995, Shelly gave up her profession in order to become a
full-time homemaker and mother, in the belief that young children
should have a full-time nurturing experience and a mother’s attention.
Their four children include Daniel ’11, who graduated Yeshiva
Rambam and is majoring in economics at Queens College; Naomi ’14
who is attending Shalhevet High School in the Five Towns; Binyamin
’17 who is attending MTA, and Atara who is presently in sixth grade
at YCQ.
As a reflection of their continuous hakarat hatov and sense
of obligation, Shelly, with the logistical backing of Avi, has been
involved with the PTO since their children started school at YCQ.
Among the positions held are the Book Fair, Supperette, Chanukah
Boutique, and Mother’s Day Boutique.
May the zechut of Avi and Shelly’s devotion to their family
and the yeshiva earn them good health, “yiddishe nachas” and success
in all their endeavors.
SCHOLARSHIP DINNER - MARCH 11, 2018
YESHIVA OF CENTRAL QUEENS
Rabbi Yaakov D. Finkelstein
educator award
דברים היוצאים מן הלב נכנסים אל הלב
Yeshiva of Central Queens is pleased
to honor one of its most effective and popular
rebbeim, Rabbi Yaakov Dovid Finkelstein.
Growing up in Montreal, Canada,
Rabbi Finkelstein studied at the Yeshiva
Gedola of Montreal, where he graduated from
high school in 1991. He went on to the Rabbi
Naftali Riff Yeshiva in South Bend, Indiana
from 1991 to 1994, and then to Eretz Yisrael
where he studied at Yeshiva Yagdil Torah in
Yerushalayim, followed by a number of years at the Kollel of Hagaon
Rav Shmuel Miller shlita. Rabbi Finkelstein holds a dual master’s
degree in Education and Special Education from Touro College.
In his eighteenth year at YCQ, Rabbi Finkelstein serves as
a rebbe of the fifth grade and as the seventh grade rebbe of Gemara,
Mishna, Navi, and Halacha.
Rabbi Finkelstein says that he doesn’t teach Torah; he teaches
children. He is constantly devising creative ways to spark the interest
of the students, adapting the lessons to what the children enjoy with-
out watering down the lesson content. He knows what makes each
child “tick” and strives to develop a life-long “yachas” - relationship
with each child.
A resident of the Flatbush section of Brooklyn, Rabbi Fin-
kelstein has led Chaim Day Camp in Brooklyn as head counselor for
the past 16 years, and has been a member of the Chaverim volunteer
emergency response team for the past 15 years.
May he, together with his wife Hadassah, continue to see
much nachas from his talmidim and from his children Dovi, Ari,
Nossi, Racheli, and Shmuel.
SCHOLARSHIP DINNER - MARCH 11, 2018
YESHIVA OF CENTRAL QUEENS
Marc Merrill
alumni award
Marc Merrill comes from a legacy YCQ
family. His mother Mrs. Ruth Merrill graduated
from YCQ in 1963, and was honored at YCQ’s
fiftieth anniversary celebration. His aunt, Eva Sole,
graduated in 1962. His siblings, Jeremy ‘91, Michael
‘93 and Michelle ‘96 are YCQ graduates, and so is
his wife Sarah ’04, and her siblings Faigy ’02 and
David ‘05.
Before coming to Queens in the 1950’s, the
family lived in Flatbush, Brooklyn. However, they couldn’t find a yeshiva
suitable for the family with an affordable tuition. The family searched and
found a yeshiva in Queens – YCQ – that arranged for them to pay a tuition
they could afford. “If it wasn’t for YCQ, our family would not be frum today,”
says Mrs. Merrill.
With the nurturing and encouragement he received as a student in
YCQ, Marc applied his innate abilities to succeed in high school and higher
education. After graduation from YUHS for boys (MTA), Marc spent two
years at Yeshivas Lev HaTorah in Ramat Beit Shemesh, Israel, under the
tutelage of Rabbi Boaz Mori. Back in the United States, Marc attended
Yeshiva College and earned a degree in history. He also studied in the RIETS
Semicha program for three years. Having learned about the many young
high school graduates whose dreams to study Torah in Eretz Yisrael were
hampered by the lack of finances, Marc single-handedly organized a fund
to provide scholarships for these boys and girls. According to Mishpacha
Magazine that featured an article about Marc’s project, Torah LeTzion has
raised close to $1 million, sending 350 post-high school students to Yeshivot
in Eretz Yisrael.
Marc took his first full-time professional position as Director of
Alumni Activities at YCQ. He began to mobilize the alumni to resume
the relationship they had with the Yeshiva, for their betterment and for the
benefit of the Yeshiva. Even now, having moved on to the Yeshiva Univer-
sity Department of Institutional Advancement for RIETS, Marc remains
a significant conduit of information and ideas to his successor. Among his
other volunteer activities was a six-year stint as Assistant Director of Youth
Activities at the Young Israel of Jamaica Estates, during which time he
met his partner in life, Sarah Weintraub. Today the Merrill couple thanks
Hashem for their two lovely children Binyamin, 2.5, and Naomi, 1 year old.
After a day of work and helping with the children, Marc always
makes it his business to go to the Bais Medrash Ohr HaChaim to learn
“lishmah.” Marc Merrill represents the fulfillment of the mission of YCQ.

דרךof תורהand מידות טובותand for opening your warm arms
and being a second home to our children and all of us!
From their first day of nursery to the day of graduation,
YCQ has exceeded our expectations in every way. The great morot, rabbis,
and teachers have given our children an amazing education
and taught them to love learning.
We thank YCQ every day for being such a great school, and we hope
to continue our wonderful relationship for years to come.
May ‘ הcontinue to bless the YCQ entire family with אריכות ימים שלום ונחת
Avi and Shelly Peretz
v
We grew up witnessing our mom, Shelly, dedicating countless hours
working to improve this amazing Yeshiva. From running the annual
Chanukkah Boutique, to representing parents on the school board,
our mom always poured her heart and soul into giving back to YCQ,
that gave so much to her kids. To some, sharing their already busy
mom is too much to ask for.
For us, it was an honor knowing she worked so hard to make YCQ,
a place we called home, even better. We know YCQ is lucky
to have our mom, as we are lucky to have YCQ. Thank you so much
Mom for all that you have done for us and for
all that you have done for YCQ. For all the times we nagged you for your
attention and time, yet you were still able to find time to make
YCQ a better place. Thank you (super) Mom, we love you!!
