THE YCQ VIEW!
Parshat Toldot
1 KISLEV 5782 by Rabbi Landsman
UPCOMING EVENTS
Rosh Chodesh Kislev The Pasuk says: “And these are the generations of Avraham: Avraham gave birth
Candle Lighting: 5:28 p.m. to Yitzchak.” Rashi is bothered by the fact that “Avraham gave birth to Yitzchak”
Havdallah: 6:27 p.m. merely restates something we already know. Furthermore, why does the Torah go
YCQ Early Childhood back and trace the family lineage from Avraham when introducing the offspring of
Program Open House! Yitzchak?
Sunday, November 7 Rashi answers that the cynics of the generation contended that Sarah became
10 a.m. pregnant from Avimelech. “She lived many decades with Avraham and had not
No Sunday Learning become pregnant from him.” To counteract this cynicism, Hashem fashioned
Sunday, November 7 Yitzchak’s appearance to be identical to that of Avraham. It was immediately
Daylight Savings obvious to anyone who saw Yitzchak that “Avraham fathered Yitzchak.”
Turn Clocks Back Many times children look like their parents. It is possible to meet someone for the
One Hour on Sunday Nov. 7 first time and immediately recognize him as being the son of an individual who is
No School well known to you. In this case, the identical appearance of the father-son pair was
Thursday, November 11 more overt than even that. The Medrash states that Hashem made a “miracle”
Veterans Day to make this happen. The appearance of Yitzchak was so exactly like that of his
YCQ FAMILY NEWS father that it was miraculous!
Mazal Tov to Avraham Avinu wanted to sanctify the Name of Hashem and publicize the great
Yaakov Kakuriev miracle that Hashem did for him. Avraham made a big celebration for just that
(YCQ Chef) purpose, but the cynics were sitting there having a field day. They joked that
on The Birth of a Yitzchak could not possibly be Avraham’s child. Sarah must have become
Granddaughter pregnant from Avimelech. We know how it goes: A roll of the eyes, a twist of the
Mazal Tov to nose, a mocking smile.
Rabbi Avi Kramer In truth, this cynicism was illogical. They were saying that “Sarah was pregnant
(JHS Rebbe) on The from Avimelech” because he could not possibly be Avraham’s child. The wonder
Engagement of His Son here wasn’t that Avraham had fathered a child. Avraham had already fathered a
Shmuel Chaim To Rivky son from Hagar! The wonder was that Sarah, barren all her life, conceived after she
Shechter of Hillcrest reached the age of ninety!
What then was the nature of this cynicism? Why did Hashem respond in such a
LIBRARY ELECTIONS miraculous fashion to counteract this patently false type of mocking? Rabbi Frand
explains, the point is that cynicism has exactly this power. Cynicism does not need
to be precise or accurate. The effect of a “one-liner” is basically like a pin that, in
a moment, bursts the balloon. The fact that anyone with intelligence who thinks
about this for 30 seconds will recognize it as nonsense and irrelevant. The damage
has already been done. Such is the power of leitzanut.
Allowing this momentary bursting of the balloon of Kiddush Hashem would have
defeated Avraham’s entire purpose in making the party. Thus, Hashem needed to
make a miracle to restore the inspirational nature of this festive meal.
The Mesilas Yesharim writes in Chapter 5: “With the smallest joke, a person can
deflect from himself the greatest amount of inspiration and enthusiasm. One joke
pushes away 100 rebukes.”
Have a great Shabbat!

Library Elections With Morah Etta

Grade 2 Sweet Election

Mrs. Blum and Morah Aliza’s second grade class learned all about Election Day with their very
own class election. The class voted on their favorite candy and the winning treat was given out the
class. The students filled out ballots to cast their vote and placed them in the class ballot box. Each
student received an “I Voted” sticker, just like at the real polls. And the winner is . . . Sour Belts! What
a sweet way to learn all about Election Day!

Consortium Of Jewish Day Schools

YCQ has had the privilege to work with the Consortium of Jewish Day Schools (COJDS) over the
past five years. COJDS is an organization that is dedicated to the empowerment, development,
and improvement of Jewish day schools across North America, promoting best practices and
using traditional Torah values as their guide. Last week COJDS interviewed Rabbi Ribalt and Rabbi
Landsman to understand why it is important for us to improve and implement standards to help
students learn Chumash on their own. We had the privilege of hosting COJDS, and we look forward
to partnering with them further, to help our students become connected to Torah and help them
become independent and excited learners.

Grade 7 Girls Volunteer For CHAZAQ “Power Up Campaign”

This past Tuesday and Wednesday, the Grade 7 girls had the opportunity to join CHAZAQ in their
annual telethon. CHAZAQ is an organization in the Jewish community, whose mission statement
is “building communities.” CHAZAQ holds lectures on health and finances to support anyone
in need. It also places Jewish students whose families cannot afford Yeshiva tuition into Jewish
schools. Additionally, CHAZAQ runs a weekly food pantry for those struggling to put food on their
tables. After recognizing the importance of what CHAZAQ does for our community, they felt they
HAD to help. CHAZAQ ran a 36-hour Power Up campaign to help raise $1.3M in funds for their
important work. The girls participated by making calls to donors directly from CHAZAQ HQ. With
every phone call they made, they informed the donors that every dollar is matched. The girls were
Baruch HaShem very successful and had a blast while being a part of a very special mitzvah! Yasher
Kochachen to the 7th grade girls! CHAZAQ couldn’t have reached their goal without you! Thank you
Mrs. Willig, YCQ JHS Chesed Coordinator, for creating and facilitating this wonderful opportunity!
