“Four Score and Seven Years Ago!”
On Wednesday, February 22, 2017 the 4th and 5th graders were privileged to have Arts Power National Touring
Theater come to YCQ and perform “Four Score and Seven Years Ago”. The play featured five characters that re-
told the story of the Civil War and all the events that led to the famous Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The
students were enthralled to see their social studies curriculum come to life.
Bracha Bee
This week the students participated in our annual bracha bee. The atmosphere was exciting with students cheering
on their fellow classmates as they demonstrated their vast knowledge of the Brachot. The students had prepared
weeks in advance for this program and it was clear how well the students knew their brachot. Kol hakavod to our
students and teachers and to Rabbi Ribalt for their dedication and participation in making this program a success!!
AN INFORMATIVE AND INSPIRING LIBRARY VISIT WITH ILLUSTRATOR, JANICE HECHTER
On Wednesday, February 22, the YCQ Library welcomed award-winning picture book illustrator, Janice Hechter, who gave a
fascinating presentation about the creative and technical process skillfully combined to create illustrations for one of her books,
entitled Avi’s Choice. A PowerPoint presentation accompanied a reading of the book, which centered on the main character, Avi’s
challenging choice: should he play ball with a friend or fulfill the mitzvah of “bikur cholim” by visiting his sick Grandpa? Mrs.
Hechter followed this with a demonstration of the technical tasks necessary to finalize the book prior to printing. The students
were asked to identify changes from first effort to second, such as the main character’s crooked teeth and no tzizis in the first draft
to a brighter smile and tzizis in the second. They were also asked to determine which of two or three selections made a better
book cover: one with two boys playing ball or two scales side-to-side featuring the ball on one and “bikur cholim” on the second.
A chorus of “ooh’s” and “aah’s” accompanied this intriguing presentation. Overall, the students clearly saw that it takes a great
deal of detailed effort and time to make a book. A special heartfelt thanks to the YCQ Parent-Teacher Organization for making
this extraordinary event possible!
Mix-It Up Program
This past Tuesday Mix It Up students did a lesson on anti-bullying book to grades 1st to 5th. The students worked very hard
preparing for the day. A few months ago Assemblyman Michael Simanowitz donated anti-bullying books so the students could make
a great lesson out of it. The kids in the classes really enjoyed and learned a lot from the Mix It Up kids. A big thank you goes to
Sam Verstandig, Rabbi Landsman and Mrs. Golubtchik for making this day happen and Assemblyman Michael Simanowitz for the
donation of books.
