VOLUME 13 NUMBER 20 MARCH 6, 2015 15 ADAR 5775
UPCOMING Parshat Ki Tisa By: Rabbi Landsman
EVENTS As the second half of sefer Shemot focuses primarily on the construction of
the Mishkan, the tragic eigel tale sticks out, seemingly unrelated to its neighboring
Candle Lighting: perakim. Rashi, however, sees a response to the chet ha-eigel in the Tabernacle
5:33 construction, explaining that the Mishkan helped Israel to achieve a kappara for their sin.
Havdallah: 6:35 Interestingly, in Bamidbar Rashi understands the mitzva of the Para Aduma as fulfilling a
similar function. How did these two, apparently different, mitzvot serve as a kappara for
Sunday March 8 the same chet?
5th-8th Parent Rabbi Tzvi Sobolofsky, Rosh Yeshiva , Yeshiva University explains that if we are to
Child Learning understand how a mitzva can serve as a kappara, we must comprehend the sin for which
it atones. What was Israel's motivation in creating the golden calf? In his Kuzari,
9-11:30 Rabbi Yehuda haLevi explains that Bnei Yisrael had no initial intent to worship avoda
Monday March 9 zara. Rather, they sought a this-worldly manifestation of God's presence. This desire, not
Parent-Teacher intrinsically wrong, was satisfied by the binyan haMishkan. What differentiated the eigal
from theMishkan?
Conferences The answer can be found in the last several pesukim of sefer Shemot. Concerning every act
3:45 Dismissal involved in the binyan haMishkan, the Torah takes pains to assure us that it was
performed "ka-asher tziva Hasehm et Moshe." The emphasis of this recurring phrase
K-8
Tuesday March 10 contains the simple yet fundamental difference between the eigel and the Mishkan. Both
were intended to serve as vehicles with which to relate to the Divine, yet one became
Book Fair avoda zara and the other became the dwelling place of the Shekhina. The Mishkan was
Wed. March 11 built because Hashem had commanded it; each detail was adhered to precisely as God
had instructed. Only in such a manner can a physical entity serve as a makom for the
Book Fair hashra'at haShekhina. A plan devised by man without HaShem’s specific instruction will
Wed.-Thur. ultimately result in Avoda Zara. The lesson to be learned after the eigel incident was that
March 11—12 the God's presence would rest in Israel only if His specific commanded methods of attain-
ing this goal were adhered to. As such, the Mishkan was the ultimate kappara for the chet
5Th Grade ha-eigel. Klal Yisrael would ultimately merit an earthly manifestation of Hashem's glory,
but only "ka-asher tziva Hashem et Moshe."
Overnight Trip With this understanding of the root of the chet ha-eigel, the para aduma's role in the
To Greenkill
Sunday March 15 kappara is equally apparent. The red heifer could be called the "chok par excellence." As
a chok, it reinforces to us the message that our avodat Hashem must be dictated by
5th-8th Parent HaShem. We cannot rationalize the meaning of a chok, yet we perform it nonetheless. This
is the antithesis of the mistake that led to the eigel. Rather than relying on our human
Child Learning perception of what is spiritually appropriate, we subjugate ourselves totally to the retzon
9-11:30
Tuesday March 17 Hashem, and only in this manner will we attain hashra'at haShekhina. Furthermore,
Science Fair the para aduma serves not merely as an atonement for the eigel, but as a prerequisite for
entering the Mishkan. Only when these mitzvos work in tandem- when we learn from
6th Grade 7PM both that avodas Hashem is dictated by "ka-asher tziva Hasehm et Moshe"- can the chet
Friday -Shabbat ha-eigel be eradicated.
March 20-21 The concept of the Mishkan being the ultimate expression of "ka-asher tziva Hashem et
Moshe" was endangered by Nadav and Avihu offering ketoret "asher lo tziva osam,"
8th Grade Yachad which they were not commanded to offer. A dedication of the Mishkan which did not
Shabbaton follow God's precise instructions would undermine its entire message. Such actions were
therefore punished severely.
May we be zoche to learn the message of the Mishkan and the para aduma, and may we
YCQ Family News live our lives "ka-asher tziva Hashem et Moshe." Shabbat Shalom!

Fifth Grade Chesed Trip
After the success of our Chanukah Chessed trip, the fifth graders returned to various nursing
homes and assisted living centers to bring Purim cheer. Students arrived in costume and presented
residents with mishloach manot that they had decorated and prepared in class. The fifth graders
then helped the residents decorate crowns so that they too could be in costume. Our students
ended their visits with Purim Bingo. The students were so happy to bring joy to those who might
not otherwise receive mishloach manot and visitors for Purim. A special thank you to Mr. Hativi,
Mrs. Szlechter, Mrs. Laub, Ms. Cigan, Mr. Nadelbach, Mrs. Hoffman, Mrs. Orlanski, Morah Fried,
Rabbi Rohr and Mrs. Cohen!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DR. SEUSS!
On March 2nd, the first grade celebrated the birthday of Dr. Seuss! The students were so excited and
surprised to find their first grade teachers dressed up as characters from his books. They read stories, took
pictures, and learned all about this amazing author's life. First grade is so excited to continue learning from
the amazing works of Dr. Seuss!!! What is your favorite Dr. Seuss book???
