UPCOMING Parshat Lech-Lecha By: Rabbi Landsman
EVENTS Rashi comments that the HaShem assured Avraham that leaving his home and
family in Aram and heading to a then unknown destination would somehow be to his
Candle Lighting: benefit and ultimate good. Even though this may appear strange to the casual
5:34 observer leaving the known and secure and heading out to wander to an unknown
destination the ways of HaShem are inscrutable and often counter-intuitive to
Havdallah: 6:34 human logic.
The purpose of Avraham’s wandering journey was to reach the Land of Israel and to

while in Aram and Charan, Avraham and Sarah did good work, spreading the idea of
Program 9-11:30 monotheism and teaching the basic system of morality that is the core of the
Tues. November 4 Torah’s value system. Many people were influenced by them and became followers of
Election Day monotheism and began to worship only the one true HaShem.
Wed. November 5 Rabbi Berel Wein wonders, why not leave Avraham and Sarah in Aram to continue
Bar Mitzvah their good work? Why send them off to the Land of Israel, then inhabited by the
fierce and pagan Canaanite nation, to a very uncertain and perilous situation?

7th Grade Boys Additionally, in the Land of Israel, the wicked, powerful and influential cities of
7PM Sodom were present. Seemingly Avraham and Sarah could have accomplished much
Fri. - Shabbat more by remaining in Aram than by travelling to the Land of Israel. As a result of
this type of human thinking, Avraham has to rely on HaShem’s counter-intuitive
November 7-8 logic, so to speak, and unhesitatingly embark on this dangerous journey that will

Shabbaton Rabbi Wein explains that it is clear from all of this that the fulfillment of Jewish
destiny and influence, of the holy self-actualization of the Jewish people can only be
Sun. November 9 achieved in the Land of Israel. The obstacles that the Land of Israel itself raises to

forbearers remain as the guideposts for all future Jewish generations.
House If we look around at the Jewish world today the only significant demographic growth
of Jews the world over is in the Land of Israel. The millennia-long exile and the

weakness. Only in the Land of Israel will the Jewish people find their soul and

Veteran’s Day Just as in the time of Avraham and Sarah, the Land of Israel is plagued with
dangers, problems and fraught with apparent peril. There is still a touch of Sodom

“Enhancing the Bond Between Parents and Children”
“Parent-child learning is truly the manifestation of everything we hold dear,” were the
introductory words of Rabbi Paysach Krohn as he kicked off the Yeshiva of Central Queens
(YCQ), Sunday morning Parent-Child Learning Program. Rabbi Krohn remarked on the
importance of taking time out of busy schedules to learn Torah with your children. The key
to the continuation of the Jewish people is dependent on the connection between parents and
children, Torah and HaShem. Rabbi Krohn pointed out how a program that entails parents
and children giving up a Sunday to be together learning torah, where they “disconnect”
from all of their daily activities, sports, and electronics in order to “re-connect” to each
other and to HaShem is the type of program we need more of. YCQ in establishing their
Sunday Morning Parent-Child Learning Program is a step in the right direction.
