YCQ Family News WOW- Words of the Week

Mazel Tov to Yonatan This year the students in JHS have been introduced to new academic words every week on a bulletin board in the main JHS

Evgi on his becoming lobby. Students who use these words in their writing or find them in their reading will get extra credit points or STAR cards for
that class. Please review the words with your whole family so that we can all learn together.
a Bar Mitzvah!
Definition- a concise explanation of the meaning of a word or phrase
Derived- formed or developed from something else; not original

Distribution- the act of spreading
Economic- of or relating to production and management of wealth

Environment- the totality of surrounding conditions

Sunday Morning Learning
On Sunday, November 20th the 5th-7th grade students enjoyed an inspirational class by Rabbi Finkelstein.
Rabbi Finkelstein did a matching exercise on the Lamed Tet Melachot through various hints, to help the
children and parents. We were able to gain so much of the interactive and cute lessons.

Debate
On Thursday, November 17th, the Middle School Yeshiva League held its first meet at HANC. The participating
schools were YCQ, HANC, HALB and BPY of Paramus. The resolution debated was: The United States should build a
wall on the US-Mexican border. We are very proud of the members of our team for the hard work and diligence;
especially the first place team of Shira Schwartz and Rachelle Winokur. Rachelle also won as second place individual
speaker and Shira for third place individual speaker. We look forward to January when YCQ will host the next league
meet.

Fourth Grade Powwow

“Hakame!” (Welcome!) was the greeting offered to the fourth grade students as they arrived at YCQ’s annual Powwow on
November 23rd. Members of the Shinnecock Indian Nation, which is located on the East End of Long Island, had arrived to
model their regalia, perform traditional dances, and teach the boys and girls about their customs and traditions. The
students were awed by the beauty of the regalia that was worn by three Shinnecock dancers – one garbed in a “jingle dress,”
one in a traditional fringed deerskin blouse and skirt, and one wearing a beautifully-colored, satin “ribbon dress,” designed to
resemble a butterfly in flight. The students were enthralled by the dancers’ performances, and enjoyed participating in
circle dances themselves. During the question and answer portion of the program, the girls and boys were fascinated to learn
that the Shinnecock are Algonquian people, and that their name means, “People of the Stony Shore.” The Shinnecock have
always been known for their powerful dugout canoes and for the fine wampum beads that they produce. The afternoon
concluded with a feast of traditional Native American food – corn muffins, apple sauce, cranberry sauce, popcorn, and apple
juice. It was an interesting, informative, and delicious celebration!

Second Grade Thanksgiving Workshop

On Wednesday, November 23rd the second grade participated in a Thanksgiving workshop. The students
each invited one guest to join them in school for the special program. Together with their guests the students
made turkeys using apples and candy, and pumpkin parfaits. The children and guests then solved
Thanksgiving puzzles. The program culminated with a special Thanksgiving photo booth and party. The
program was a success and will hopefully be an annual event.

Third Grade Intergenerational Melave Malka

On November 19, our third grade students celebrated their annual Intergenerational Melave Malka.
With musical accompaniment from Morah Tali Spector, YCQ’s music teacher, the students proudly
climbed the stage beautifully dressed in their shabbat clothing. They sang Hebrew and English songs
about Shabbat and Motza'ei Shabbat. Afterward, the students enjoyed watching a slideshow. A
beautiful collation was set up in the lunchroom where the students and families enjoyed music and a
magic show from Rabbi Yoel Hecht. A wonderful time was had by all! We would like to thank the
following people who ensured the success of the program: Rabbi Lonner, Rabbi Kovitz, Mrs. Benson,
Mrs. Beylus, and Mrs. Blum.

Third Grade Thanksgiving Celebration!

On Nov. 22nd all the third grade classes got together to celebrate Thanksgiving.
They worked in
groups to make
something about
Thanksgiving that
we learned in the
classroom
(mayflower, pilgrim
village, Wampanoag
village etc.) with
different supplies
such as Popsicle
sticks, feathers, and
pom poms and did
a wonderful job
presenting to the
rest of the grade! A
fun creative learni
ng experience for
all!

December 2016 / z”ga, ukxf

Dear Parents:

With Chanukah fast approaching, we are excitedly planning our annual

YCQ Parent Teacher Organization CHANUKAH BOUTIQUE.

The boutique takes place in the Junior High School Multi Purpose Room and this year is
scheduled for Tuesday, December 20th and Wednesday, December 21st (20th & 21st of Kislev).

The Chanukah Boutique is both a fun and convenient way for the children tochoose gifts
for the chag. It is also a chessed opportunity for the children, as all the funds raised go toward
our school and programming.

The boutique offers something for everyone. There will be gifts available for each
member of the family, friends and teachers. The cost of the items are very low so that every
child may purchase something (aprox. 50 cents and up).

CLASSES FROM NURSERY THROUGH 8TH GRADE WILL BE SCHEDULED FOR VISITS TO THE
CHANUKAH BOUTIQUE.

ALL PARENTS ARE WELCOME TO COME TO BROWSE AND SHOP EACH DAY.
IF YOU CANNOT MAKE IT, PLEASE REMEMBER TO SEND MONEY ALONG WITH YOUR CHILD

ON THE DAY OF HIS/HER SCHEDULED VISIT.
FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE, ALL NURSERY THROUGH GRADE 3 STUDENTS WILL BE RECEIVING

ENVELOPES TO PLACE THEIR MONEY/CHANGE IN.
For the boutique to be a success, we need your assistance! We are looking for some
great volunteers to set up and help us at the boutique. If you can give of your time in some
capacity, please contact one of the people listed below.
We look forward to hearing from you soon.
