VOLUME 14 NUMBER 5 OCTOBER 30, 2015 30 CHESHVAN 5776

UPCOMING Parshat Vayerah By: Rabbi Landsman

EVENTS In our Siddur, we repeatedly refer to the akeidat Yitzchak as testimony to

Candle Lighting: Avraham's absolute trust in Hashem, and we plead to arouse Hashem's mercy
upon us by virtue of our ancestor's great merit.
5:36
Havdallah: 6:35 Rabbi Dr. Abraham Twerski, world renowned Rabbi and psychiatrist raises the
following question, Avraham's great devotion to Hashem notwithstanding, there
Sun., Nov. 1 have been many other instances of great sacrifice and martyrdom in our history.
Set Clocks Back After all, Hashem spared Yitzchak's life, but Channah watched her seven sons be
killed because of their refusal to bow to an idol. In fact, the king was so moved by
One Hour Channah's children's acceptance of martyrdom that he wished to spare the life of
5th-8th Parent the seventh child. He threw down his ring and said to the child, "Just bend down to
Child Learning pick it up. You will not be worshipping the idol, but the people will think you
complied and bowed to the idol, and that will allow me to spare your life."
9-11:30

Fri. Nov. 6 Channah told the child not to pick up the ring, and the child was killed. Does this not
JHS Boys equal the akeidah? Yet, we do not invoke Channah's merit in our prayers.
Shabbaton! Unfortunately, there were far too many instances of martyrdom in our history, but
the merit of the akeidah goes beyond martyrdom. In addition, the episode of
the akeidah testifies to the greatness of Avraham in other ways, which constitute a
Shabbat Nov. 7 source of teaching for us. Rabbi Dr. Twerski explains that there are subtleties in the
JHS Boys episode of the akeidah that are often overlooked.
The Torah relates that on the day after he received the awesome Divine command,
Shabbaton

Sunday Nov. 8 "Avraham woke up early in the morning" (Breishit 22:3) to carry out the divine
Preschool Open command. The Talmud cites this as a virtue of Avraham and as a teaching that
those who are diligent to serve Hashem hasten to fulfill His mitzvot. One subtlety is
House overlooked. If Abraham awoke in the morning, obviously he slept during the

Tuesday Nov. 10 night! What father, knowing that he was to sacrifice his beloved child the next day
Bar Mitzvah could possibly sleep peacefully? At the very best, a father would be up at night,
Workshop 7th pacing the floor, wringing his hands and crying. But not Avraham. His trust in
Grade Boys Hashem was so perfect that he took everything with equanimity. Everything that
Hashem does is good. If Hashem wants me to have a son, that is good. If Hashem
wants me not to have a son, that, too, is good. Avraham slept peacefully all night.
Wednesday Nov. 11 Another great virtue of Avraham is pointed out by Harav Chaim Shmuelevitz
Veterans Day (Sichos Mussar 5731:1 ). For decades, Avraham had been denouncing idol worship.
No Sessions The idolatry most severely condemned in the Torah is the Molach, which was
BJE Faculty served by human sacrifice. Avraham vigorously condemned this practice, saying

Conferences that it was unthinkable that Hashem would ask for human sacrifice. Now, if he

Sunday Nov. 15 would carry out what he felt to be the Divine command to sacrifice Yitzchak, what
PTO Family will he say to the multitude whose practice of human sacrifice he had so
Picture Day vehemently condemned? He would have to say, "You were all right. Throughout
my entire lifetime, I was wrong!" Few people can admit that the position which
5th-8th Parent they espoused so vigorously and for so many decades was an error. The greatness
Child Learning of Avraham was that he was ready to do this.
We can see now why the akeidah is singled out as Avraham's greatest merit. It
9-11:30

tells us much about the character of the father of our nation, whom we are to

YCQ Family News emulate. Shabbat Shalom

20/20 Torah Vision

This past Sunday, participants of YCQ's Sunday Learning Program
enjoyed an engaging lecture by our JHS rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Howitt.
Entitled "20/20 Torah Vision", Rabbi Howitt's address discussed the
importance of appreciating the Torah as our supreme indicator of
truth, and the need for a person to adjust their ideals to fit with the
lessons and values of the Torah. From the parent and child chavruta
learning at the beginning of the program until the exciting raffle
drawing at the end, a meaningful and enjoyable time was shared by all.

New Family Welcome Reception

The Parents Teachers Organization of YCQ had a nice turnout at their annual
new parent evening on Monday night, October 26th. Held in the multi purpose
room, parent’s met and socialized with other. Rabbi Landsman opened up with a
beautiful dvar torah followed by greetings from Mrs. Tracy Landsberg, YCQ PTO
President. We then heard a timely short lecture from Mrs. Marci Davidovics, our
school social worker on “Helping our kids to have space to grow”. The best part
of the evening was hearing each parent introduce themselves and share why
they chose YCQ. We are so thrilled to welcome our new families to our ‘home’ at
YCQ.

Eighth Grade Visits Ellis Island

This past week, the eighth grade students visited Ellis Island and the September 11th
Memorial. The students sailed past the Statue of Liberty on a beautiful ferry ride. The
students took a tour of the Ellis Island Museum and learned about the history of the island.
They ate an outdoor lunch overlooking the Statue of Liberty and spent time at Battery Park. At
the 9/11 Memorial the students took parchment paper and etched the names of particular
victims that they researched, followed by dinner at Bravo Pizza. The eighth grade students had
a wonderful educational day of touring lower Manhattan!

Kindergarten Rain Program

In honor of the month of Cheshvan, when we daven for rain in Israel, the Kindergarten
students experienced a hands-on rain program with music, movement and dance. Morah Toby
Jacobowitz, music educator, gave the children scarves and flowers and had them move to dif-
ferent kinds of music representing the gentle rain and heavy rain falling in Eretz Yisrael. The
children had a wonderful time dancing around the room to the music!
