YCQ Commemorates Yom HaZikaron

Members of Bnei Akiva visited YCQ for Yom HaZikaron. In order to teach students about the daily
struggles faced in Israel and to help students create a greater connection to fallen soldiers and terror
victims, Bnei Akiva set up multiple stations giving the student a more meaningful understanding of this
special day. Students learned how important it is for us to support our soldiers who are fighting everyday
for Eretz Israel. In addition, our students paused for a moment of silence as is done annually in Israel to
honor those who died while defending our beautiful country! The students all sang Hatikvah while
looking at the flag that represents our freedom! May we merit to see the complete yeshua and see
Mashiach speedily in our day! The fourth grade choir led by Morah Tali Spector, our music teacher, per-
formed beautiful and meaningful Israeli and Jewish songs for their parents and participants at Congrega-
tion Etz Chaim during their Yom HaZikaron program. Special thanks to Rabbi Ribalt and Morah Tali for
coordinating this event.

AUTHOR/ILLUSTRATOR DOUGLAS FLORIAN SHARES ROLLICKING RHYMES AND
AWESOME ARTISTRY WITH GRADES 4 & 5 IN THE LIBRARY

On Tuesday, April 17, celebrated author, Douglas Florian visited the YCQ Library and inspired our 4th-and-5th
Grade students with a mesmerizing presentation about writing, poetry, illustration, and his best-selling books. “My
Favorite Nation is Imagi-Nation,” announced Mr. Florian within the first few minutes of a program which readily
kept his audience absorbed from start to finish. This is a fitting way to describe the free flow of creative
imagination evident in all his published poems. His exceptional talent extends to his eye-catching illustrations,
along with an uncanny knack for transforming almost every word out of his mouth into clever rhyme and word
play. The author reviewed several elements of poetry in his books: Rhyme, Rhythm, Alliteration, Repetition,
Personification, Symmetry, and Onomatopoeia, to name a few. A separate drawing portion of the presentation
followed in which Mr. Florian randomly sketched pictures of animals while supplying poetic clues, as students
attempted to guess what each was supposed to represent. Many of the students had an opportunity to ask questions
prepared in library prior to this special event. A heartfelt thanks to the school’s PTO for making this special library
program possible! Thank you to Mrs. Etta for coordinating this special event for our students!

Names, Not Numbers

On Tuesday night, April 17th, YCQ hosted Holocaust survivors and their families
at our annual Names, Not Numbers dinner. Students spent time getting to know the
survivors they worked with and interviewed in order to create a film that shared
their experiences. After dinner, close to 150 people watched the film produced by
our own eighth grade students as they shared a living tribute to the
Holocaust. Special thanks to Mrs. Golubtchik for all the time and hard work.

Eighth Grade Trip to Meet Author Irving Roth
On Tuesday, April 17, the 8th grade visited Mr. Irving Roth, a Holocaust
survivor who wrote the memoir, Bondi’s Brother. He showed the
students a short video that documented the causes of the Holocaust.
Students were then given the opportunity to ask Mr. Roth questions
about his life and experiences. Lastly, students got to explore Mr. Roth’s
Holocaust museum. It was a very inspiring and moving experience.
