THE YCQ VIEW!
8 KISLEV 5782 PARSHAT VAYETZEI
UPCOMING EVENTS BY RABBI LANDSMAN
Candle Lighting: 4:21 p.m.
Havdallah: 5:21 p.m. At the beginning of the Parsha, Hashem blesses Yaakov with the
words “I am Hashem, G-d of Avraham your father and G-d of Yitzchak;
Sunday Learning Program the ground upon which you are lying, to you will I give it and to your
Special Guest Speaker descendants. Your offspring shall be as the dust of the earth, and
Rabbi Dov Keilson you shall spread out powerfully westward, eastward, northward, and
author of the new book, southward.”
“Open Your Eyes – The simple understanding of the blessing “Your offspring shall be as the
Seeing Hashem Everywhere” dust of the earth” is that Yaakov’s descendants should be so plentiful
Grades 5-8 that their numbers will be comparable to the dust of the earth. The
Sunday, November 14 Medrash, however, sees in these words more than just a blessing of
9 a.m. being plentiful and bountiful. Out of all the similes that one might pick,
the terminology “like the dust of the earth” is somewhat peculiar.
Grades N — 5 This is different than the blessing elsewhere that we should be “like the
Picture Day sand of the sea” (k’chol haYam). The phrase “k’afar ha’Aretz” literally
Tuesday, November 16 means like the dust of the ground. The dust of the ground is that which
we walk on. Is it not peculiar that Jews are blessed by being told that
JHS Picture Day they will be like the dust that people trample?
Wednesday, November 17 There are so many more picturesque similes to use, as we find
YCQ FAMILY NEWS elsewhere. “Like the stars in Heaven” is certainly a more majestic
Mazal Tov to comparison. Stars are unreachable. They are beautiful. They sparkle.
Adelina Gavrilov (7G1) “As many as the stars in Heaven” is a very inspiring and poetic blessing.
On Her Bat Mitzvah But “k’afar ha’Aretz” is almost like saying “you should be like dirt.” Is
this a blessing?
Mazal Tov to Even the expression “k’chol haYam,” like sand of the sea, seems
Mrs.Rebecca Kosoff more appropriate. In our minds, we do not think of the sand on the
(YCQ Administrative Assistant) seashore as something we trample upon. We associate sand of the sea
On the Birth of A Baby Boy with beautiful white sandy beaches. Even sand has quite a different
connotation than “you should be like dust.”
We Regret to The Medrash explains the very powerful significance of this choice of
Inform You of The Passing of words. This is more than just a blessing of multitudes. The blessing of
Rabbi Mendel Chaim Bernstein, “k’afar ha’Aretz” represents the history of the Jews.
Beloved Father of Everybody tramples over the dust of the earth, but in the end the dust
YCQ JHS Rebbe, of the earth always remains on top. That same dust ultimately covers
Rabbi Ephraim Bernstein those who trample it.
“From dust you are taken and to dust you will return.” In the final
analysis, the dust of the earth is always on top. This is the analogy and
the blessing of “Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth.”
Yaakov is told that his children will be trampled upon and spat upon,
like the dust. But in the end, like the dust, they will remain on top!
Shabbat Shalom

Ms. Laffer’s Grade 3 Students Study Veterans Day

In honor of Veterans Day, Ms. Laffer’s Classes 3-212 and 3-211 learned in Social Studies, that
a veteran is a person who has fought for our freedom and our country – Navy, Army, Air Force,
Marines, and Coast Guard. Our nation honors the men and women who have bravely served our
country over the years; those who have risked their lives to make the world a safer and better
place for us all. In reading groups, the students read an article about Veterans Day, and answered
comprehension questions. They each wrote a “Retell” about what they learned. Ms. Laffer brought
in pictures of her grandfathers who served in World War Two. Her paternal grandfather Hy served
in the U.S. Army, and her maternal grandfather Alex served in the U.S. Navy. The class learned that
although we celebrate Veterans Day every year on November 11, we should remember to honor our
veterans every day!

Grade 2 Stav Skit

Morah Foular and Class 2-207 performed a “Stav Skit” today to show how much they know about
the Fall season. They learned many Hebrew descriptive words about Fall, and the differences
between the seasons. What a fun and unique way to learn more Hebrew and apply it to our every
day lives.

After School Program: Literacy Club

Ms. Rosenblum’s Grade 5 Literacy Club is progressing nicely in its reading of “The Unteachables”
by Gordon Korman. The students focused on the characters in the book: who are the favorites,
non-favorites, and their traits, feelings, and actions. They drew pictures of what they thought the
characters looked like. Thank you, Ms. Rosenblum, for encouraging students to love reading!

Mike and Ike and Marshmallow Towers
By Yonah Gold and Jonathan Shamayev, Grade 5

This Tuesday the students of Class 5-300 at YCQ attemped to build the largest tower out of Mike
and Ikes and marshmallows. They had two small packs of Mike and Ikes, a decent number of
marshmallows and about 20-30 toothpicks. In class 5-300 we had many different strategies, and
the towers took on many dimensions. Some students stacked high, and the towers came crashing
down. Many kids had difficulty, and many did it with ease! When they were all finished, they got
to eat all the candies that they were given to build their structure! The winner was Jacob Geula, in
second place was Naftali Hativi and in third was Nehorai Avramcheyiv.
