VOLUME 14 NUMBER 31 JUNE 3, 2016- 26 IYAR 5776

UPCOMING EVENTS Parshat Bechukotai By: Rabbi Landsman

Candle Lighting: 8:04 Towards the end of the Tochacha, the Torah says, “and I will remember my
Havdallah: 9:05 covenant with Yaakov, and even my covenant with Yitzchak, and even my covenant

Sunday, June 5 with Avraham will I remember; and the Land I will remember.” This pasuk contains
Yom Yerushalayim the rather unusual spelling of the name Yaakov with five letters (Yud-Ayin-Kuf-Vav-
Celebrate Israel Parade Vet), rather than the usual four letters (Yud-Ayin-Kuf-Vet). Rashi quotes the

Monday, June 6 Medrash, which says that the “full” spelling of the name Yaakov (with a ‘vav’) occurs

Chagigat Bnot Mitzvah in five places in Tanach and the “missing” spelling of the name Eliyahu (without the
Grade 6 Girls normal vav at the end) also occurs five times.

Tuesday-Wednesday The Medrash explains that in those five places, Yaakov our Patriarch

June 7-8 figuratively took a letter from the name of Eliyahu as a security pledge to guarantee

Grades 1-5 that the prophet Eliyahu would appear and announce the imminent redemption to his
Literary Writing Festival children (Eliyahu will be the precursor of the Messiah).

Friday, June 10-13 Rabbi Frand quotes Rav Dovid Feinstein, who explains why it was

Shavuot- No Sessions specifically a “vav” that Yaakov took. The last Mishnah of Tractate Eduyoth relates a
tradition in the name of Rabbi Yehoshua, that Eliyahu will not expose families that

Lag B’Omer Color War
On Thursday, May 26, the elementary school celebrated Lag B'Omer with a day full of Color
War activities. The students competed in different sports activities: dodgeball, basketball and
soccer. Mr. Schwartzman ran very exciting relay races. Each grade also competed in a trivia
competition with questions about science, math and literary arts. “B-L-U-E all the way to
victory!” and “Let’s go White Team!” could be heard throughout the day. For the first time in
YCQ’s illustrious 75 year history, Color War ended in a tie. The students had such an amazing
time. Thank you to all the teachers who ran a color war event.

A Trip to The Queens Zoo
On Lag B’Omer the nursery went on a trip to the Queens Zoo. The children enjoyed feeding
the animals in the petting zoo. They also had a chance to visit some bears. The trip ended with
a ride on the carousel and playing in the playground. Upon their return to school the children
were eager to discuss what they learned at the zoo and which part they liked best. Teachers and
students enjoyed an amazing day.

Spring Band Concert
On May 26, the YCQ band members under the direction of Mr. Hynes of Paul Effman Music
Services, gave a spring concert. Twelve violinists played a selection of songs including
Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star and London Bridges. Hatikvah, the theme to Star Wars, and
Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony were played by the woodwind, brass and percussion sections of
the band. The performance was amazing and the music was heard as it reverberated through
the halls of YCQ.

The Giver
Through Project Based Learning, grade six students gained knowledge and skills
by designing a game and game board for the book, The Giver by Lois Lowry. While
playing the games, students investigated and responded to engaging, complex
questions, problems, and challenges from the important events they read about in
the book.

Grade 7 Trip to Philadelphia
On May 24, grade 7 students went on the YCQ annual ‘Philly’ trip. They went to see the
Liberty Bell and to the Franklin Institute. Followed by the Duck Boats tour that took them on a
tour around Philadelphia on land to see all the monuments and then they took the truck/boat
into the water and looked at historical ships docked there. The students ‘quacked’ at their tour
guide with their duck whistles as he offered information and a lot of jokes. Before
returning back to school, the students enjoyed dinner at the Cherry Grill Chinese food
restaurant. It was both a fun and educational outing.

Assemblyman Simanowitz Visits YCQ
Following letters on air pollution written by grade 6 students, Assemblyman Michael
Simanowitz visited YCQ to discuss their letters on this very important issue with them. He also
arranged for an educational specialist from the Department of Environmental Conservation to
join him in order to student knowledge on the importance of protecting our environment. Using
furs and skulls from New York City wildlife, students were able to touch and explore the
physical features of different species, which help them survive through this hands-on learning
experience.
