VOLUME 17 NUMBER 19 FEBRUARY 15, 2019 10 ADAR I 5779

UPCOMING Parshat Tetzaveh By: Rabbi Landsman
EVENTS
One of the main garments that the Kohen Gadol of Israel donned was the choshen, that
he wore upon his chest. This contained twelve precious jewels of different colors and on each of
the stones was engraved the name of one of the tribes of Israel.
Candle Lighting: 5:11 In addition to these stones there were two large elongated diamond stones that were
Havdallah: 6:13
embedded in the shoulder straps of the ephod that the Kohen Gadol wore. Engraved on those
shoulder strap stones were the names of the A vot of Israel and a reference to all of the tribes of
Monday, February 18 Israel. Thus all of the twenty two letters of the Hebrew alphabet were to be found on these
President’s Day stones on the choshen and on the shoulder straps.

NO SESSIONS This allowed these stones and their engraved letters to serve as the urim v’tumim the

means of prophecy by which important national issues could be decided with divine help and
Sunday, Feburary 24 intervention. Though the letters of the answer shone on the stones, the ability to string the letters
UPK In Session together correctly and coherently into the necessary words and message depended upon the
Grades 5-8 prophets of Israel who “read” the urim v’tumim accurately.
Rabbi Wein teaches that this was symbolic of the symbiotic relationship, so to speak, of
Parent Child Learning HaShem and the Jewish people in pursuit of the national and spiritual goals of Israel. Only by

Saturday, March 2 this interaction of heaven and humans could the message of the urim v’tumim have any
YCQ 78th constructive meaning. Rabbi Wein explains that heaven alone never completely determines our
future. We must also work and strive, interpret and analyze, study and act in order to see our
Anniversary Dinner future realized successfully.

Sunday, March 3 In the pocket of the choshen there was inserted a piece of parchment with the ineffable
name of HaShem written upon it. This was the engine that powered the miracle of the urim
UPK In Session v’tumim. Without its presence the choshen was a lifeless collection of jeweled stones. This
Grades 5-8 significance is part of Jewish tradition.

Parent Child Learning Beauty and expensive value are only relevant when they are somehow inspired and

created for a lofty purpose of spirit and service. Shlomo Hamelech wisely said that “if
Tuesday-Wednesday HaShem’s spirit is not felt in the building, then those that have constructed it have toiled in
March 5-6 vain.”

Book Fair In the time of Bayit Sheni, the choshen was present on the chest of the Kohen Gadol,

(please note the but the urim v’tumim was no longer in effective operation. The human element of service and
calendar change) dedication was already lacking. There were no longer prophets present amongst Israel and the
choshen therefore was merely an ornament, part of the uniform of the Kohen Gadol but no
longer a guide to the future and a source of instruction to the people of Israel from HaShem.
The lacking of the choshen led great men and rabbinic leaders during Bayit Sheni to
recognize early on that this Temple was ultimately doomed to be destroyed. The necessary
YCQ Family News interplay of heaven and earth, of HaShem and His creatures were no longer present. In such an

Mazel Tov to Rabbi environment, no matter how beautiful the structure or how handsome the jewels may have been,
Landsman on the birth the sense of eternity upon which all Jewish life is based was absent. It is our task to somehow
of a granddaughter! restore the very same urim v’tumim in our personal and national lives.

Sunday Learning

This past Sunday there were two shiurim given by two of our Rebbeim. Rabbi Rosenfelt, our Junior High
School Rebbe, gave an enlightening shiur entitled, “The Mishkan: Why Did We Really Need It?” He spoke
about how the commentaries eplain the purpose behind building a temporary home for the Shechina to rest
prior to building the permanent Bait HaMikdash. Rabbi Bernstein gave a shiur to his seventh grade honors
Gemara students and parents on the background history of Rashi, which described the next level of
development his in-depth analysis of Chumash and Gemara. The program concluded with a raffle led by Rabbi
Bernstein and a 3-on-3 basketball in the gym.

Trip to See Junie B. Jones

This past Monday, the kindergarten and second grade went to Queens
College to see the show, Junie B. Jones, a musical adaptation of the best-
selling book series by Barbara Park. The show was about Junie B.’s first day
of school and how a lot of things have changed. There were many loveable
characters and fun-filled songs that captured the students’ attention and
made for a great learning experience and entertaining trip.

Grade 7 to the NY Hall of Science

Last week, the seventh grade visited the NY Hall of Science in conjunction with
their STEM curriculum in Mr Goldstein’s science class. Students learned about
solar power in a 3-D movie, found ways to help the environment in ‘Connected
Worlds’, and learned physics and biology through many exciting exhibits.
Everyone had a fun and educational time. Special thanks to Mr. Goldstein for
organizing the trip and to all of the chaperones.

Mrs. Kaplan’s Class Let It Snow!
Before this week, Mrs. Kaplan’s class was wondering if any snow would ever
come! Mrs. Kaplan had the students remove all of the stuffing from diapers
and put Sodium polyacrylate on a tray. When water was added, there was
instant snow. The students had a lot of fun watching the chemical reaction
and can’t wait to try it at home again. They were even more excited when
finally some real snow came this past week!

Healthy and Wise: Jack and the Hungry Giant
This year, Morah Aliza Solomon started YCQ’s Healthy & Wise program with a new
book called, “Jack and the Hungry Giant: Eat Right with My Plate” by Loreen Leedy.
In this book a giant named Waldorf teaches Jack about the 5 Food Groups and how to
make a healthy meal. He reminds Jack to make half his plate fruits and vegetables and
the other half grains and protein. His wife, Zofia, reminds Jack not to forget his dairy
foods. Waldorf also tells Jack not to eat too much junk food and not to forget to
exercise. After reading the book the students drew their own healthy meals, making sure
to include all the food groups on their plates.

Dear Parents,

As Parent Teacher Conferences are approaching, we would like to extend an invitation for all parents in grades N-5 to

schedule prior to arriving at school on Parent Teacher night. The scheduling system is first come/first serve, so the
earlier you sign up, the more availability there will be for appointments, and the more likely you will be able to
customize a convenient schedule for yourself.

Before beginning the process, please check the following schedule of conference dates and times in order to know
when the teachers you would like to see will be available:

Please Note: Fourth grade parents should not sign up for a Math Conference. Rather it should be done via phone or
