UPCOMING Parshat Shmot By: Rabbi Landsman

EVENTS Rabbi Yissocher Frand quotes the Mishna which discusses the concept of Divine reward and punishment that is

Candle Lighting: 4:12 "measure for measure". One example cited is, Miriam waited to see what would happen to her brother's basket floating in
Havdallah: 5:11 the Nile, because of that all of Klal Yisroel waited for Miriam for a seven day period when she was temporarily "exiled from
the camp" as punishment for speaking lashon hara against her brother.

Sun., Dec. 22 At first glance, the fact that Miriam stayed at the riverbank to see what would happen to her brother does not

Chumash seem to be such a great deed on her part. She may have stayed out of curiosity, it may have been out of concern, but it
Presentations does not seem like such a significant and important act that it should require all of Klal Yisrael to wait for her in the wil-

2-204 at 11AM
In order to appreciate the actual significance of her act, we need to see it in the context provided by the Gemara
in Sotah. The Talmud states that Amram was one of the great men of the generation. When he heard Pharaoh's decree to

There will be NO throw all the male children in the Nile, he gave up hope and decided to divorce his wife, rather than bring any more chil-

Parent-Child dren into the world who would just be drowned in the Nile at birth. Amram set the pattern for the rest of the nation and

Learning this Sunday everyone followed suit and divorced their wives as well.
Miriam told her father that his decree was worse than Pharaoh's decree. Pharaoh's decree was only directed at

the children in this world, Amram was decreeing that the children would not come into existence and therefore would

Sun., Dec. 29 and at the age of 130 she became pregnant and had the child who grew up to be Moshe Rabbeinu. Again, everyone else

The Gemara then relates that when Moshe was born, the house filled with light. Amram kissed Miriam on the
9-11 forehead and told her "Your prophecy has been fulfilled." However, when Moshe was thrown into the Nile, Amram went
over to Miriam and slapped her on her forehead and asked, "Now what happened to your 'great prophecy'?"

Wed., Jan 1 It is in this context that we begin to understand the meaning of the pasuk "And his sister stood away from him at

New Years Day a distance." The reward that Miriam later received was not just for standing at the Nile for a few moments, it was for be-
No Sessions ing the heroine of the whole story of Amram and all the Jews taking back their wives. It was for being responsible for the
birth of the person who became the leader of the Jewish nation. She saved her brother and in effect the entire nation

because she refused to give up hope.
Siddur Presentations
Things looked hopeless. At the time Miriam spoke up to her father, there were already thousands and thousands

of Jewish children who had died in the Nile. By standing firm, to see what would be with her brother, she demonstrated a

YCQ Family News particularly Jewish trait: resilience and refusal to abandon hope. Miriam's heroic faith and resilience thus gave courage to
the nation and saved them from the terrible fate of discouragement and despair.

Mazal Tov to Yosef Miriam taught us the timeless lesson of not giving up hope when things look bleak. This valuable lesson symbol-

Levy on his ized by her waiting to see what would happen to Moshe in the Nile, is certainly worthy of the payback of waiting for Miriam

Bar Mitzvah when she was not able to travel. Have a Shabbat Shalom!

SPORTS UPDATE

JV Basketball Victory
By: Hillel Golubtchik and Oren Betesh

The YCQ Junior Varsity basketball team had a great season starting with a win against Yeshiva of Flatbush on Wednesday night
December 11th. There was great cheering from our team supporters and great coaching by Justin Schussheim which lead us to our
25-14 victory. Throughout most of the game the team as a whole played excellent defense which led to offense. Congratulations
to Jack Ruben, Danny Gidon, and Yonatan Blitz on scoring their first points on the JV team. There was great defense by Hillel
Golubtchik and Noah Goldstein which led to great offense by Oren Betesh and Joseph Gross. It was a great game all around and
we never stopped trying, hopefully there should be many more wins leading to the championship.

YCQ Hockey Team Win
By: Hillel Golubtchik and Davidi Salvit

The YCQ Wildcats Hockey team had a 7-3 win against Yeshiva of Barkai on Thursday, December 12th. Previously in the YCQ
Hockey season our team destroyed Barkai 7-1 in an exciting home game. Sam Krup who leads the team in goals had a hat trick for
the second time this season. Ezra Perlmutter had an incredible game in net only letting 4 goals. There was good coordination be-
tween Jackie Glazer and Coby Casden on offense. Our hockey team has a balanced 2-2 record this season beating Barkai twice.
We’re looking forward to future wins from our Hockey team.

YCQ WILDCATS VARSITY
By: David Salvit and Ezra Perlmutter

The boys’ varsity basketball team lost this Wednesday night to Yeshiva Derech Hatorah. In the first quar-
ter we were losing 14-2. But the Wildcats came back to end the second quarter 26-27 Wildcats. In the third
quarter we lost the lead led to poor defense. In the fourth quarter even though we were losing we never
gave up and that is the spirit of a true team. We are looking forward to improving our record and having a
great rest of the season! LET’S GO WILDCATS!!!

YCQ WILD KITTENS
By: Yale Beylus & Maayan Sandowski

The YCQ “Wild Kittens” are looking forward to a great season with our two amazing coaches Aviva and Daniella.
We took a hard beating to Magen David but it was only “first game jitters”. Now that that’s over, we plan to make a
great comeback against YNJ on Sunday the 22nd, with the help of Diana, Amanda, Michelle, Serena, Elana, Loren,
Yael L, Allison and our two fighting captains Marnie & Tehilla. We hope our classmates come and cheer us on.

2-205 and 2-206 Chumash Presentation

Morah Reut Berkowitz has managed to wow us yet again. Each of the classes, 2-205 and 2-206
finally received their Chumashim this past Sunday! For months they had been preparing for this
momentous day. They learned about the Chumash, how to find the Psukim, and how to read and
understand them. They wanted to share all that they do and learn with their parents and fami-
lies. They put on a beautiful show about the creation of the world. After a wonderful and exciting
show, each student received their very own Chumash engraved with his or her name. The class
learned the first ten Psukim together in front of their families and friends, and afterward en-
joyed some treats and cake. Mazel tov to all the second graders! It is so inspiring to see their
love for Torah!

JHS Visits the MET
The 6th grade girls visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Ancient
Egypt exhibit in conjunction with their ancient civilization curriculum. The
students had a wonderful time participating in a scavenger hunt in the mu-
seum as well. Thank you to Mrs. Howitt for planning such an exciting and
educational trip!
