UPCOMING Parshat Yitro By: Rabbi Landsman

EVENTS

Candle Lighting: 5:10 There are differing opinions as to when exactly Yitro appeared in the camp of
the Jews in the desert. There are those who follow the rabbinic saying that one
Havdallah: 6:12 cannot infer chronological order from the contrast of narratives as they appear

Monday, February 17 in the Torah. Rashi definitely adheres to this view in many instances. However
President’s Day Ramban and others maintain that a general chronology of events can correctly

Sunday, Feburary 23 Rabbi Wein states that according to this last view, Yitro appears to join the

Grades 5-8 Mishkan. This makes his appearance and newly found commitment to Jewish life
and Torah values even more remarkable. Yitro is the epitome of the restless,
Parent-Child Learning wandering, curious, seeking soul of humans.
9:00am-11:30am
According to Midrash, Yitro experimented with all forms and types of
worldly faiths and religions before arriving at Moshe’s doorstep in the
wilderness of Sinai. And, he exclaims that “only now do I know” what I am
searching for and where eternal truth and soulful serenity lie.
Sunday, March 1 All humans embark on the same journey as did Yitro. All of us are looking

for the ultimate meaning of our lives and what our purpose on earth truly is.
Grades 5-8 Some of us, like Yitro of old, are forced to take many detours and encounter
Parent-Child Learning many dead-end paths before finding our road to fulfillment. Unfortunately, there
are many who never find their way clear of the maze of society, mores and the
9:00am-11:30am distractions that are the roadblocks to our search for our true selves and
purpose. But many of us, again like Yitro, are able to fight our way through our
YCQ Family News previous errors of direction and reach the sanctuary of a Torah life and a moral
existence. Yitro stands as a living and eternal example of this great spiritual
accomplishment.

YCQ-PTO Annual Challah Bake with Mrs. Kosher Guru

Thursday evening, February 6, the PTO organized their annual Challah Bake. Bringing members of the
Yeshiva and community together to perform the mitzvah of Hafrashat challah. At the PTO event, a crowd
of over 100 women, men, and children gathered together to partake in this meaningful mitzvah. Rebeka
Boxer, Mrs., Kosher Guru, gave the participants guidance and chizuk through her inspirational story of
faith and miracles and of how this mitzvah has brought her closer to HaShem. She discussed the
connection between performing the mitzvah of Hafrashat challah and the miracle of facing difficult
obstacles in life by connecting to ones Yiddishkeit and to HaShem.
When the challah dough was complete, in a meaningful moment, the entire room in unison made the
Hafrashat challah bracha, bringing a spiritual feeling of achdut and understanding. Thank you to Julie
Faska, Rachel Stern, Aliza Peled, Valerie Olsen, Melissa Stock, and those who stayed for hours after to
help clean up. A lot of work by the volunteers went into making this event an experience to remember and
to encourage others to continue baking challah and davening to HaShem with kavanah.

Tu B’Shevat Shuk

In honor of Tu B’Shevat, the sixth grade girls designed a simulated Israeli shuk in the
multi-purpose room. Upon entering, the elementary school students handed in their
passports and received tickets to purchase items in the shuk, including different
products from different food groups. This way, students were able to learn and make
different brachot. This was a wonderful hands-on learning experience for our students
as they became familiar with Israeli culture. Special thanks to Morah Alyssa
Schussheim for all of her hard work in creating the shuk.

customize a convenient schedule for yourself.

Before beginning the process, please check the following schedule of conference dates and times in order to know
when the teachers you would like to see will be available:
