UPCOMING Parshat Emor By: Rabbi Landsman

EVENTS Our thoughts focus on the mitzvah of sefirat haOmer as we read in Parshat Emor, about
that mitzvah that we are in the process of fulfilling. Sefirat haOmer begins and concludes with
Candle Lighting: a korban. The korban haOmer (barley offering) brought on the second day of Pesach initiates the
7:52 countdown to Shavuot, which culminates with the korban of the shtei halechem (two loaves of bread),
offered on Shavuot.
Havdallah: 8:54
There are certain similarities between these two korbanot. Both are grain offerings, which are
Sunday, May 22 incumbent upon the community to bring, and in contrast to other korbanot, they can only be brought
Pesach Sheini from grain that grew in Eretz Yisrael. Aside from these similarities there are certain stark differences
between them. Rabbi Tzvi Sobolfsky, Rosh Yeshiva, Yeshiva University explains that the korban

Transition Night grain offering. Although the shtei halechem are made of wheat, they are required to be baked
as chametz. A korban mincha, which is chametz, is an anomaly because all other menachot had to

and so radically different from one another?

The korbanot of the Omer and shtei halechem reflect the dual aspects of man. The Omer was

Choir Performance Commemorating Yom HaZikaron
A grade four choir led by Mrs. Tali Spector our music teacher, performed beautiful and meaningful Hebrew
songs for their parents and participants at Congregation Etz Chaim during their Yom HaZikaron program.
The students then participated in a trivia game where they had to answer questions relating to Eretz Yisrael.

Commemorating Yom HaZikaron

Members of the Bnei Akiva Youth Movement visited YCQ for Yom HaZikaron. In order to teach
students about the daily dangers and struggles faced in Israel every day and to help students create a
greater connection to fallen soldiers and terror victims, Bnei Akiva set up multiple stations that
introduced students to family members of a lost soldier or terror victim, giving them a more personal
connection. Students learned how important it is for us to support our soldiers who are fighting everyday
for Eretz Yisrael. In addition, our students paused for a moment of silence to give honor to the fallen
Soldiers.

Yom HaAtzmaut Celebrated
The fourth graders hosted grades K-2 with an Israel Fair. Younger students learned all about
Eretz Yisroel and felt like they were really there. Events were held for students throughout the
day, with flag making and other activities to celebrate our independence. The entire school got
to listen to music, sing and participate in Israeli dance during a concert in the yard. It was a
great day of celebrating Eretz Yisrael.

Chesed Trip to Young Israel Of Queens Valley Senior Center

The 4-304 boys went to Young Israel of Queens Valley Senior Center to perform acapella
songs for the program participants. Rabbi Landsman, Mrs. Cohen, Rabbi Soffer and Mrs.
Dua joined the boys at the Center as they entertained beautifully.

Final Debate Match
This past week, the YCQ Debate Team competed in their final debate competition for the year. The
debate was hosted by North Shore Hebrew Academy and included debaters from SAR as well. All
YCQ debaters were very well prepared and delivered persuasive speeches and challenging
crosses. After all the scores were tallied, Ari Ostrow won a trophy for 1st place individual speaker
and Ari and his teammate, Eitan Gutenmacher, were awarded 1st place team. Yasher koach to the
entire Team.

Mishmar Groups Go to Mets Game

All of the grades 4-8 students that participated in the after school Mishmar Program were treated to
a Mets game at Citifield. These students made a commitment to spend time learning additional
Torah to what they learn during school hours.

Annual YCQ PTO Supperette

This year’s Spring PTO Supperette gave tribute to several members of the YCQ family in recognition for their service to
the Yeshiva. We honored our Judaic Studies Assistant Principal, Rabbi Dr. Steve Eisenberg, who will be making Aliyah
this summer, in gratitude for the innovative learning styles he brought to the Judaic Studies curriculum.

The next honor was bestowed upon Mrs. Millie Levine for 13 years of dedication to her grade 2 students. Mrs. Melissa
Cohen, General Studies AP described Mrs. Levine perfectly in her speech, “Mrs. Levine, you have taught your students the
most valuable lesson, which is respect – respect for elders, respect for peers, and respect for themselves. This you taught,
not by telling them, but by showing them through your incredible middot tovot.”

Honor was also given to Mrs. Stefanie Sturm, a former teacher and current resource room provider thanking her for years of
support and teaching hundreds of students.“
In addition, this year's grade 8 graduating parents that were involved over the years as an integral part of the planning and
implementing of fund raising and programming to benefit the students and the yeshiva, through membership and
involvement in the PTO were given Hakarat Hatov for their years of service.
