“Enhancing the Bond Between Parents and Children”
“Parent-child learning is truly the manifestation of everything we hold dear,” were the
introductory words of Rabbi Paysach Krohn as he kicked off the Yeshiva of Central Queens
(YCQ), Sunday morning Parent-Child Learning Program. Rabbi Krohn remarked on the
importance of taking time out of busy schedules to learn Torah with your children. The key
to the continuation of the Jewish people is dependent on the connection between parents and
children, Torah and HaShem. Rabbi Krohn pointed out how a program that entails parents
and children giving up a Sunday to be together learning Torah, where they “disconnect”
from all of their daily activities, sports, and electronics in order to “re-connect” to each
other and to HaShem is the type of program we need more of. YCQ, in establishing their
Sunday Morning Parent-Child Learning Program, is a step in the right direction.

Parshat Noach Comes Alive

This past week, some of the animals from Noach’s Teivah visited the nursery,
kindergarten and the first grade children when a traveling teivah came to the YCQ yard.
The children in grades N-3 got to feed and pet a llama, sheep, goat, rabbits, and much
more! The children had an amazing time and had a chance to experience animals up
close just like Noach!

Mix It Up!

The Mix It Up At Lunch day was a great success! The Mix It Up club is a JHS anti-bullying club which
promotes tolerance, diversity and acceptance in our school. The lunch is one of the most special days of the
year. The lunch room is transformed into An array of colored tablecloths and the 6th, 7th, & 8th graders are
each given different color plates. This way they all sit with new friends from all different grades. At each table
the ice breaker games helped to start conversations. As if having Carlos and Gabbys for lunch wasn't amazing
enough, we were treated to delicious cupcakes with all different colored sprinkles. One major highlight of the
day was the visit from Senator Joseph Addabbo. He came to show support for YCQ and spoke to all of us about
how proud he was of our school for taking this stand against bullying. Thank you to all of the many people that
made this day such a wonderful experience.

Addabbo Praises Student For Anti-Bullying Club

In a continuing effort to raise awareness of bullying in our schools, state Senator Joseph P.

Addabbo, Jr. met with a local 8th grader who runs an anti-bullying club in his school.

Sam Verstandig, a student at Yeshiva of Central Queens, recently met with Addabbo at the

Senator’s mobile office hours held at the Forest Hills Library to discuss the school’s Mix It Up

club, of which Sam is president. The group aims to teach children how to be tolerant of others

and embrace their differences, rather than put each other down through bullying and mean

behavior. The club also focuses on teaching students how to react if they see others being

picked on.

“We could all learn a lot from Sam and the message he is spreading through the Mix It Up club,”

State Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr. met said Addabbo. “With a little more tolerance and understanding from all of us, our world could be a
with Sam Verstandig, a local 8th grader much more peaceful place, but perhaps the most important environment to teach this concept is
who runs an anti-bullying club in his in our schools. Too often, we see young lives lost far too soon due to bullying, and with the
school, Yeshiva of Central Queens. advancements in technology, our kids are now more exposed to mean and unfriendly behavior

than ever before. As the father of two young girls, I understand the importance of teaching

children to celebrate each other’s difference rather than criticize them.”

During his meeting with the Senator, Sam shared details about some of the club’s outreach efforts, including a Mix It Up At Lunch Day

where students are encouraged to sit with other students at lunch instead of their normal group of friends. Sam organized ice breakers to

help his classmates gets to know each other, and the students also held a moment of silence for all the children who have lost their lives as

a result of bullying.

In the few years since it was started at Yeshiva of Central Queens, the club has become so popular at the school that it no longer has the

space or resources to accommodate all the students who wish to join. Sam has arranged a schedule and a budget for fundraising and

other outreach events throughout the remainder of this school year that he plans to work on with his teachers and classmates.

“I am so proud to see not only the dedication Sam has put into building this club, but also the immense amount of interest that his

classmates have in joining and helping to spread the message about how harmful bullying can really be,” Addabbo said. “I encourage all

students to get behind this meaningful cause, and look forward to seeing Sam’s project grow to be even bigger.”
