Final Sunday Morning Learning Session!

The world famous speaker Rabbi Mordechai Becher, inspired and entertained the large audience for the final
Sunday morning learning of the year. In a mock court trial using the audience as his jury, he debated whether or
not ‫פרעה‬should be guilty for his crimes against the Jews; or was he just following “the will of God”. Using the
commentaries of ,‫רמבם & רמבן‬he clearly delineated the reasons for the ultimate guilt of .‫פרעה‬The students were
then treated to a grand raffle, which included a Play Station 4 and other great prize.. Students were also given a
new Artscroll addition ‫מסילת ישׁרים‬so that they could continue their extracurricular learning even when the
Sunday morning the learning is concluded. Special thanks to all the Rabbeim who gave up their Sundays to give
over shiurim, and to Rabbi Bernstein for organizing all these weeks!

YCQ TORAH BOWL TEAM UPDATE!!

For the first time in nearly ten years, the YCQ Boys Torah
Bowl team has advanced to the Championship Round of the
Torah Bowl playoffs! After securing a double bye for
finishing the regular season a perfect 12-0, they battled in a
tough best of three series to claim their place in history as
Southern Division Champions. After Ramaz defeated fellow
Manhattan rival MDS to advance to the finals, YCQ awaited
with bated breath to begin the Championship Round. This
would set up a rematch of last years finals against Ramaz
where YCQ came up just short.Game one of the finals
produced an outcome that had not been seen in over a year:
a YCQ Boys team loss! However, after surprisingly
dropping game one, YCQ went on to win the next two
games to advance to the finals and avenge last years loss to
Ramaz. On the “court,” Eitan Canter played a “gritty” game
as he was a Game Time Decision battling an illness, and he
proved to be the difference maker. The most successful
season in YCQ Torah Bowl history was lead by Ari
Schick, Eliya Alcoby, Eli Dyckman and the Canter brothers
(Eli and Eitan). We cannot wait for the Championshop
Round!

Western Hemis”fair”

Around the world in 80 days? How about half-way around in two days? YCQ’s Multipurpose Room
was host to presentations about places in the western hemisphere hosted by our 5th graders at our annual
Western Hemis-Fair. Over one hundred displays and hand-crafted projects showcased the many
interesting places on our side of the Atlantic. We went from Greenland to Argentina, saw Native
American regions, and a few natural wonders!! Heartfelt thanks to our 5th grade Social Studies teachers,
Mrs. Hoffman and Mrs. Orlanski, our computer research experts, Mrs. Jen Jaffe and Mrs. Mazal
Yusupov, as well as Ms. Rosenblum, Rabbi Rohr, Rabbi Finkelstein, and Morah Fried. It really takes a
great team to put on such an amazing show! Kudos to the amazing work of each of the 5th grade
students.

YCQ Runs Wild in Junior High Hockey Finals

This past Thursday night, the YCQ Wildcats put the final touches on their perfect season, defeating the HALB Lions, 4-1,
in the Junior High Hockey Championship game, played in the new gym at HAFTR.
The history between the two sides is brief, yet recent. Two years ago, the Halb Lions defeated the YCQ Wildcats in the
finals 3-0, adding another banner to the HALB gym wall. Only four members of either team remain. All members of the
losing YCQ side and all with lasting memories of the defeat in only the school's second finals appearance.
Both teams entered the contest after dominant semifinal victories. Halb earned their way to the finals with an 8-2 trampling
of Magen David, while YCQ punched their ticket by dominating Har Torah, 7-3. The two teams met during the regular
season, in a matchup that saw 12 goals scored, a 7-5 YCQ victory and HALB's only loss on the season, setting the
expectation for a high-powered affair. What occurred turned out to be a technical defense-first clinic and timely scoring that
would spearhead the top seeded YCQ Wildcats to victory.
YCQ opened up the scoring half-way through the first period, when Andrew Haller deposited a pass from Sam Korman,
into the HALB net, on the power play, to give the Wildcats the 1-0 lead. Early in the 2nd period, YCQ would extend their
lead, with Haller scoring his second goal of the evening, moving up the middle of the floor, and winding up from mid-court,
to make it 2-0. With just a little over three minutes remaining before the second intermission. Korman would jump on the
score board himself, taking a pass from Tani Leitner on a 2-on-1, and hitting the back of the net. The Lions would get a
chance to cut into the lead, as YCQ took a penalty as the period came to a close, but the stingy YCQ Penalty Kill held down
the fort, keeping the score at 3-0 heading into the third period.
The start of the 3rd period would prove to be the backbreaker. Korman would add another tally for YCQ, moving to the net
all alone with the ball, faking a short-side stuff attempt, instead, working around the goalie and sending it to the opposite
post to cap YCQ's scoring on the night. A minute later, HALB would score to get the Lions on the board. However, YCQ
goalie Rephael Gemal was a rock and would not be beaten again, locking up YCQ's first hockey championship. Gemal's
heroics in keeping the high-powered HALB offense at bay earned him game MVP honors.
The YCQ Wildcats finish their season having scored 102 goals and yielding only 23 over their 12 victories, topping the
YCQ record books. Congratulations to the team and their coaches, Elliot Weiselberg, Avidan Berman, Josh Friedman and
Josh Wengrofsky on their successful run and to YCQ, Rabbi Landsman, Mrs. Golubtchik and Rabbi Hamel on their first
hockey championship.

YCQ Wins the Hockey Championship!!!
