UPCOMING Yom Kippur By: Rabbi Landsman
EVENTS
As Yom Kippur approaches, the concept of kaparah is foremost on our minds. There are many

Fri., Sept. 13 to atone for various aveirot. The elaborate service of korbanot offered in the Beit Hamikdash on Yom

Mon., Sept. 30 Kippur, we lament in great detail our inability to achieve the level of kaparah once available to us.

Rav Tzvi Sobolofsky, Rabbi of Congregation Ohr HaTorah in Bergenfield New Jersey, and
YCQ Family News
Rosh Yeshiva, Yeshiva University quotes Chazal who teach us that there is a method of kaparah even
Mazal Tov to; Gavriel
Haviv, Aryeh Liviem, greater than korbanot. The study of Torah and the performance of acts of kindness can
Mordechai Yerushalmi,
Eitan Mehlman, Aviv achieve kaparah even in a situation that korbanot are not effective. Chazal comment concerning the
Simantov, Yonatan
Soleimeni, David Haviv, house of Eli Hakohein, that although their sins cannot be atoned for through the mechanism
Lior Shmino, Mordechai
Balakhaneh, Menachem of korbanot, talmud Torah combined with gemilut chassadim can bring them atonement. We who do not

Sussman, Daniel have the opportunity to offer korbanot can still avail ourselves of talmud Torah and gemilut chas-
Hayimov, Sam
Yunatanov, Max sadim as our mechaprim. While talmud Torah and gemilut chassadim are two fundamental aspects
Simanowitz, and Hillel
Merkin on their of avodat Hashem, why should they have the ability to be mechaper for aveirot?
Bar Mitzvah!
In the tefilah of Hineni recited by the shaliach tzibbur before Mussaf on Rosh Hashana and
Mazal Tov to;
Rebecca Haviv, Abigail Yom Kippur we beseech Hashem, "u'pesha'einu techaseh b'ahava - cover all of our sins with love." This
Kaziyev, Abby Gur-Arie,
Courtney Isler, Rachel request expresses a basic concept concerning kaparah. Chazal observe that the ultimate mechaper,
Mushayev, and Emily
Shamalov on their Bat teshuva, elicits different levels of kaparah depending on the type of teshuva that is performed. Teshuva

Mitzvah! mei'ahava - a teshuva that results from an expression for one's love for Hashem and from a sincere

desire to return to a close relationship based on that love - is the highest form of teshuva. Teshuva that

merely emanates from yirat Hashem - fear of Hashem - is more limited in nature and cannot accomplish

a complete kaparah. As such, as we strive to obtain kaparah, it behooves us to perfect

our ahavat Hashem which is the prerequisite for teshuva mei'ahava. As we reach higher heights in

our ahavat Hashem, we can beseech Hashem to express His love for us by covering our sins with that

love.

How do we practically demonstrate ahavat Hashem and thereby merit the highest level

of kaparah? It is precisely talmud Torah and gemilut chassadim that express and strengthen this love,

and as such are our ultimate mechaprim. Regarding the obligation of "v'ahavta et Hashem", the Sifrei

comments "eich attah oheiv - how do we attain this love?" The next passuk answers this dilemma:

"vehayu hadevarim ha'eileh"; the mitzvah of Talmud Torah is the key to ahavat Hashem. As the Ram-

bam in Hilchot Teshuva develops the principle, "lefi ha'de'ah tihiye ha'ahava - according to one's

knowledge of Hashem will be one's love for Hashem." Knowledge of Torah is our way of attaining

knowledge of Hashem, enabling us to experience ahavat Hashem.

There is another way we express our ahavat Hashem. Acts of gemilut chassadim are the way

we imitate Hashem and fulfill the mitzvah of "v'halachta b'derachav." Modeling our behavior after

Hashem's is a testament to the love and admiration we have for Him, since we try to imitate that which

we love.

These two manifestations of ahavat Hashem - talmud Torah and gemilut chassadim - are our

most sincere expressions of teshuva mei'ahava, and as such are our most effective methods

of teshuva. May Hashem grant us the privilege to be chozer b'teshuva shleima and fulfill for us,

"u'peshaeinu techaseh b'ahava." Have a Gmar Chatima Tova and an Easy and Meaningful Fast!

YCQ Selichot Learning Program

On motzai Shabbat August 31, 2013, over 100 students in grades five through eight,
along with their parents, and Rebbeim joined together for a meaningful learning pro-
gram. The evening began with a beautiful shuir by Rabbi Shmuel Marcus, Rav of
Congregation Ishei Yisrael. Rabbi Marcus spoke about the connection between tefila,
teshuva, and Shabbat. Rabbi Marcus was extremely invigorating and enlightening.
The evening concluded with an uplifting recitation of selichot led by Rabbi Hamel
with the instructions and explanation by Rabbi Pearl. It was a most inspiring evening.

YCQ New Student Program

On Monday, September 9th 2013, the Social Work Department facilitated a new student program welcoming YCQ’s new
students in grades 1-7. Each new student was paired with an eighth grade mentor. The program commenced with each men-
tor introducing himself or herself to a new student by phone and purchasing a special age-appropriate school supply for the
new student. The new students happily received their gifts during the program. Together with their mentors, the new stu-
dents designed a crafts project in honor of Yom Tov while snacking on cookies and orange juice. Rabbi Landsman warmly
introduced each student and welcomed them to the YCQ family. We look forward to a productive and exciting school expe-
rience with them. Special thanks to Mrs. Marcy Davidovics and all the YCQ Social Work Interns for planning such an im-
portant event, and for helping our new students acclimate to YCQ so well.
