UPCOMING Parshiot Behar/Bechukotai By: Rabbi Landsman
EVENTS
Towards the end of the Tochacha, the Torah says, “and I will remember my
Candle Lighting: 7:43 covenant with Yaakov, and even my covenant with Yitzchak, and even my covenant
Havdalah: 8:50 with Avraham will I remember; and the Land I will remember.” This pasuk contains
the rather unusual spelling of the name Yaakov with five letters (Yud-Ayin-Kuf-Vav-
Sunday, May 13 Vet), rather than the usual four letters (Yud-Ayin-Kuf-Vet). Rashi quotes the
Yom Yerushalayim Medrash, which says that the “full” spelling of the name Yaakov (with a ‘vav’) occurs
in five places in Tanach and the “missing” spelling of the name Eliyahu (without the
Mother’s Day normal vav at the end) also occurs five times.
The Medrash explains that in those five places, Yaakov our Patriarch figuratively
Tuesday, May 15 took a letter from the name of Eliyahu as a security pledge to guarantee that the
PTO Supperette prophet Eliyahu would appear and announce the imminent redemption to his children
(Eliyahu will be the precursor of the Messiah).
Friday– Monday Rabbi Frand quotes Rav Dovid Feinstein, who explains why it was specifically a
May 18-21 “vav” that Yaakov took. The last Mishnah of Tractate Eduyoth relates a tradition in
the name of Rabbi Yehoshua, that Eliyahu will not expose families that have been
Shavuot No Sessions mixed up with invalidating lineage. He will only intervene in the cases of individuals
who forcibly used their power to gain positions that they were unworthy of attaining.
Wednesday, May 23 Several other opinions are brought in the Mishnah regarding Eliyahu’s future role.
Philadelphia Trip The Mishnah concludes with the view of the Sages: “Eliyahu will neither push away
Seventh Grade nor bring near, he will only come to make peace in the world as it is written, ‘Behold I
send to you Eliya the prophet and he will restore the hearts of the fathers to the
Monday, May 28 hearts of the sons, and the hearts of the sons to the hearts of the fathers.’”
Memorial Day We have heard this idea hundreds of times, but apparently we do not hear it enough:
No Sessions If the Beis HaMikdash was destroyed because of baseless hatred, then the only way
it will be rebuilt is if there is peace in the world. As a community and as a nation, we
Wednesday, May 30 must find a way to come together and make peace between ourselves.
Transition Night Yaakov Avinu chose the letter vav as collateral that Eliayhu would finally come and
5th Grade make peace amongst us. The letter vav always joins two words, two phrases, or two
thoughts together. The meaning of the word vav itself is “hook.” Vavim are hooks
Sunday, June 3 that join together disparate objects. Clearly, if there is any letter in the Hebrew
Celebrate Israel Parade alphabet that symbolizes connection and togetherness, it is the letter vav.
Mandatory Attendance Perhaps this is the meaning of the Medrash. Yaakov knew prophetically that there
would be disputes before the coming of Moshiach. The only way for Moshiach to
4-8 eventually come will be when peace is restored to the world. Symbolically, the letter
of collateral that Yaakov took from Eliyahu was the ‘vav ha-Chibur (of joining)’. We
Wednesday—Thursday, need the vav ha-Chibur that connects and hooks people together to spread amongst
June 6-7 us. Shabbat Shalom

Nature Company Visits YCQ Nursery

On Wednesday, the Nature Company came to visit the nursery classes. The children learned about
different animals and their habitats. they spoke about animals using camouflage to protect themselves.
The students then pet a rabbit, snake, crab and gecko. The program ended with a wonderful puppet
show. A fun and educational time was had by all.

Lag B’Omer
On Monday our 1st through 5th grade students participated in an activity filled Lag Ba’omer day.
In the morning they participated in color war where the blue and white team competed in various
races led by our Gym instructor Mr. Schwartzman. In the afternoon our students went on an
outing to the park where they engaged in a round robin of activities such as hula-hoop activities,
“steal the ball”, and dodgeball, soccer and kickball. The students where then treated to ices to
cool them off after a fun filled day in the park. Thank you to Morah Rebecca, Mrs. Jaffe, Mr.
Lahijami and Morah Stephanie and our administrators for coordinating this wonderful event. The
JHS girls went to Bounce, and the JHS boys went to the park! It was an amazing day for all
students and teachers! Thank you to all the teachers for the amazing day!

Class Placement Request Form

We hope this letter finds you well and that your children have had a meaningful academic school year, one of
intellectual growth, maturity and social development. As the school year comes to a close, we will once again
begin the important task of properly placing our children in the most appropriate academic and social
environment for the upcoming school year.

Our Yeshiva maintains a philosophy of grouping students in a heterogeneous setting. The heterogeneous
classroom is rich in diversity; academically, socially, culturally and geographically. Studies have shown that
heterogeneity cultivates a variety of skills that assist our students in each stage of development. Children
learn to adapt to new environments, build social skills, and benefit from exposure to other learning styles.

We are fully aware of how important it is for children to feel a sense of familiarity and belonging as they
begin a new school year with new teachers and a more challenging curriculum. As our Yeshiva is firmly
committed to maintaining strong communication and a partnership with families, we are asking you to
suggest three names of students with whom your child would feel comfortable in the classroom setting.
Please make sure to complete a new form for each of your children. We will guarantee at least one of those
three students, but three students MUST be listed in order for us to help you. Please keep in mind that this
form is for friend requests ONLY. Placement with teachers is made in collaboration with current year
teachers and administration.

This information will assist our teachers and administrators as they work on creating the best possible
atmosphere for each child. When children sense that their parents, teachers and administrators are working
closely together in a sincere effort to best place them, the results are sure to be positive.

We recognize that children grow and develop from year to year. For this and other reasons, we will reassess
our groupings on an annual basis, with continued input and communication. It is important to remember
that when students meet new people and learn in new environments, they are less likely to form inappropri-
ate group dynamics and more likely to redefine their individual roles maintaining their identity.
Please click on the link to access the class placement form http://www.ycqweb.com/ClassPlacementForm to
be completed no later than Thursday, May 17. Feel free to include any pertinent information that will as-
sist us in the placement process. Should you be interested in discussing your child’s class placement please
feel free to make an appointment with Rabbi Landsman, by contacting Hadas Vann at 718-793-8500 ext
310.

Thank you for your cooperation and your patience in this matter. We wish you a safe, happy and healthy
summer.

Sincerely,
Yeshiva of Central Queens Administration
