1. Signs (ป้ำยประกำศ) คือ เครื่องหมาย หรือ สัญลักษณ์หรือคาท่ีแจ้งให้ปฏิบัติ
แจ้งเตือน ขอร้อง ขอความร่วมมือ หรือห้ามกระทา เพ่ือให้เกิดความเข้าใจท่ีตรงกันเพราะ
ในบางคร้ังเราไม่มีเวลามากพอท่ีจะมาน่ังอ่านข้อความต่าง ๆ เช่น ในขณะท่ีขับรถผ่าน
สถานที่ต่างๆ เราจะไม่สามารถอ่านประกาศต่างๆ ได้ ดังน้ันเคร่ืองหมายต่างๆ (Signs)
จึงเข้ามามีบทบาทในการบอกเร่ืองราว ข่าวสาร ระยะทาง ทิศทาง เป็นต้น เครื่องหมาย
เหล่าน้ีช่วยให้ผู้พบเห็นเข้าใจส่ิงต่างๆ ได้รวดเร็ว และสามารถปฏิบัติตามได้อย่างถูกต้อง

1.1 Signs Giving Information ( ป้ายประกาศท่ีให้ข้อมูล) ป้ายประเภทนี้ส่วน
ใหญ่มักเป็นป้ายที่มีความส้ัน ๆ และคาที่ใช้มักจะเป็นคานาม (Nouns) หรือ บางป้ายก็มี
แตร่ ปู ภาพซึ่งก็เปน็ ที่เขา้ ใจในระดับสากล เช่น

1.2 Signs Containing Warning (ป้ายประกาศท่ีเป็นการเตือน) เพื่อเตือนให้ระวังอันตราย
หรืออุบัติเหตุต่างๆ อาจเป็นคาที่มีความหมาย “ระวัง” คือ CAUTION หรือป้ายเตือน จะมีสีเหลือง
ตัวอักษรสีดา ตามปกติในประเทศอเมริกาเหนือ จะมรี ูปร่างเป็นสี่เหลี่ยมเหมือนเพชร ในประเทศยุโรป
จะมีรูปสามเหลย่ี ม ป้ายเตอื นเช่น

ทางโคง้ (Sharp Curve)
คนเดินเท้า (Pedestrian Crossing)
เขตโรงเรียน (School Zone)
สัญญาณไฟ (Traffic Island)
มสี งิ่ กดี ขวางข้างหน้า (Obstruction Ahead)

ที่ตากอากาศ (Location of Picnic Table)

ตัวอยำ่ งปำ้ ยเตือน

1.3 Signs Containing Request ( ป้ายประกาศที่ใช้ในการขอร้อง หรือ ขอความร่วมมือ)
ถอ้ ยคาท่ีใชจ้ ะมีลกั ษณะกระต้นุ ใหเ้ กดิ ความร่วมมือหรือคล้ายเปน็ คาสั่งหลากหลาย แต่เป็นท่ีเข้าใจกัน
ว่าใช้เพื่อขอความร่วมมือหรือขอร้องให้ปฏิบัติ ส่วนใหญ่จะข้ึนต้นด้วยประโยคด้วยคากิริยา (Verb)
เชน่

1.4 Signs Containing Propitiations เครื่องหมายห้าม ป้ายประกาศท่ีใช้ห้ามกระทา
ป้ายประกาศที่ใช้ห้ามทาบางส่ิงบางอยา่ ง (Prohibition) จะมีลักษณะเป็นประโยคคาสั่งในรูปปฏิเสธ
คือ Do + not + verb หรอื No + noun เชน่

1. Must แปลวา่ ตอ้ ง
เราใช้ must ในกรณีแสดงถึงหน้าที่หรือความรับผิดชอบทีไ่ ม่สามารถปฏเิ สธได้ เช่น
You must always follow traffic signs rules.
คุณต้องปฏบิ ัติตามกฎจราจร
You must have the driving license before driving.
คุณต้องมีใบอนญุ าตขับข่ีกอ่ นขบั รถ

2. Mustn’t แปลวา่ ตอ้ งไม่
เราใช้ mustn’t ในการแสดงถึงการไม่อนญุ าต (ขอ้ หา้ ม) เชน่
You mustn’t park here. คณุ ต้องไม่จอดรถที่น่ี

ขอ้ ควรจา

must ตอ้ งตามด้วยคากริ ยิ าช่องที่ 1 เสมอ และเราใช้ must และ mustn’t
ใน present tense เท่าน้นั

3. Should แปลวา่ เราควรจะใช้ should ในการให้คาแนะนาที่น่าเช่ือถือ เชน่
You should be careful on the road. คณุ ควรระมดั ระวังบนถนน
You should take your seat belt before driving. คณุ ควรจะคาดเขม็ ขดั นริ ภัยก่อน
ขับรถ

4. Shouldn’t แปลว่า ไมค่ วรจะ เราใช้ shouldn’t ในการใหค้ าแนะนาในส่ิงทีไ่ มค่ วรจะทา
เช่น
You shouldn’t pass this way. คุณไม่ควรจะผา่ นทางน้ี
