AMBER BADENHOP | HEAD OF MIDDLE SCHOOL Diversity
‘’We must provide opportunities for our students to learn from those who are different from them and learn with those who are different from them.’’ (Chen, Brady, Gaines – Mindshift)
In a few weeks’ time we are going to have the opportu- nity to celebrate NAIDOC Week as a school. Focusing on the variety of cultural expressions of our Aboriginal community here at Marrara will be a blessing to us all. We will take time to learn from them.
Our school is actually very diverse with a multitude of cultures making up our community. From South Africans through to Canadians, Filipinos to Fijians, the different experiences and understandings make learning in our school richer and allow us to develop broader perspec- tives. It’s really quite a mosaic.
In approaching how we learn with those who are differ- ent from ourselves in my Indonesian classes, students are asked to consider their own culture and often they’ll respond with, ‘’we don’t have one’.’ Gradually, I help them to realise what culture is and how it is expressed in their family context. School can be a great place for students to begin to understand themselves more as they rub up against those who do things differently. We intentionally want our students to consider what their identity is and what it rests in.
Our diversity here at Marrara is a wonderful strength of the school and is one of the reasons my husband and I wanted our children to complete their education here. Shoulder to shoulder we come humbly to God to ex- plore what following Him means. There’s no place for prejudice in this but rather rejoicing in God’s grace to us all.

terrific Team Titres:
NTCC Top Titration Team in NT!
The Northern Territory Christian College team of Jacob Newbery, Emma Bates-Brannan and Christian Suelila were the TOP NT team in the 2020 Australian National Titration Competition. Vianca Acuna, Annaliese Lloyd and Charlene Miranda ranked 3rd, while Razvedka Macabuhay, Ryan Ezzy and Jayed Pillay were 6th out of the 60 teams who regis- tered for the competition in the NT. Yes, our teams ranked 1st, 3rd and 6th!
The Australian National Titration Competition is a compe- tition for senior school students run by the Royal Australi- an Chemical Institute (RACI). NT Christian College entered 4 teams of 3 students in the preliminary round held at the college in September. This involved two hours of practical work and calculations. Three NTCC teams achieved results which enabled them to participate in the final round held at CDU on Saturday 26 September.
The final, involving three hours of practical work and calcu- lations, is much more challenging and again NT Christian College students excelled. This year 17 gold plaques were awarded to NT students and our students won 5 of these.
Congratulations to all of our students on their Gold and Silver Awards. The Gold winners for individual results with- in 1.9% of the true values were:

Silver Award winners were Christian Suelila (Year 12), Annal- iese Lloyd, Charlene Miranda and Jayed Pillay (all Year 11). Christian and Annaliese were the top ranked silver awar- dees in the NT. Leah Morris (Year 12) and Emily Hayward (Year 11), unavailable for the final, each won a Silver as part of a team in the preliminary round.
The results are fantastic. Our students can be very proud of their efforts. They worked brilliantly both individually and collaboratively in their teams. NT awards will be presented to students in November.
RUSSELL DEMPSTER & EMMA ALLISON
| SENIOR SCIENCE TEACHERS
We’ve been learning about how we can use Design and Technology to find solutions for everyday problems. Our challenge was to build a bridge to help school children cross a river to get safely to school. We began the process by imagining and brainstorming, then gathering our materials. On Wednesday we had some wonderful helpers join us as we put our ideas into action to create our bridges. It was wonderful to see students collaborating by listening and encouraging one another. Well done, everyone!
Year 7
Experience Morning
Last Wednesday, many of our in-coming Year 7’s spent some time in the Woodwork room and the Food Tech room. Some had never hammered in nails, used a vice or managed a hack-saw let alone constructed a bird-house. Some scones came out of the oven dif- ferently than others but were heartily enjoyed nonetheless. The effort from all the Grade 6’s who took part was wonderful to see.
Special thanks to our wonderful staff who worked hard to provide this opportunity. We are looking forward to getting to know each one of the students new to Middle School next year and taking them into Deeper Learning and Deeper Connection.
Squash
This term the Year 11 Physical Education class is exploring biomechanics in sport.
It is always a fun unit of growth; physically and mentally. Students learn to apply physics and fitness to the great sport of Squash.
