TERM TWO | WEEK EIGHT June 12, 2020

Funky Fridays
Exec Thoughts
JOANNE HARDY |HEAD OF PRIMARY
We have loved our Funky Friday themes this term! What a great way to end each week. Our assemblies have been splashed with colour and each class has loved participating in the fashion parade across the stage to present their creative styles. We have missed our parents and hope that you will be able to join us very soon as we take steps toward a new normal.
Each week, we have reflected on the themes and have explored how these fun days can be reminders of some wonderful truths as well!
Mad Hat Day: the creative juices were certainly flowing for this day — we had some incredible creations! Not one hat was the same and we had some very proud wearers of fancy hats on this day! God tells us that we are made in His image (Gene- sis 1), and He placed in us an ability to create, just as He did. Although our creations were not quite as elaborate as the world and universe, we celebrated and marveled at this good gift that He has given to us. We also celebrated that each hat is unique, just as God made each of us unique, special, and so very loved.
Team Colours Day: there are some very keen supporters of sporting teams in our primary school! We had fancy head piec- es and jerseys representing dozens of teams across a multitude of sports! We explored how incredible it is to be on the best team of all, with Jesus as our coach! And what a coach! We are all loved immensely by Him, we have clear direction when we follow Him, and no one is left on the bench — we all have a part to play on His team. The New Testament tells us that Jesus has already won — so we play and live our lives from a place of victory!
Loud Shirt Day: so many bold colours and words shouted off the shirts and skirts of our students and staff, creating fun and a bubbling of joy across the school. When we have something amazing to share, we want to shout and proclaim this news, just like the loud colours and words on our shirts. We have the BEST news that brings hope and joy into our lives and we want to proclaim it! Jesus is our answer for a life filled with hope, joy and fullness of life, and we have the beautiful opportunity and responsibility to share this news with our friends, family and community.
We have had a lot of fun presenting our creations and col- ours at assembly each Funky Friday this term. We are looking forward to what Crazy Hair Day will bring this week!

Prison Break
JACK WALMSLEY | YEAR 8 CREATIVE WRITING
The sunset filled the sky with a deep red flame, setting the clouds ablaze. No time to rest. Never time to rest. Never time to rest when you’re trying to break from a prison the size of America. Well, not really, but there is never, ever time to rest and look at a sunset when you’re trying to break out of a perilous, poignant prison.
It was time to breakout. Time to go down through the tunnel. This tunnel I had dug by spoon over the space of three years and I hope it was worth my time. It takes about two minutes to go through it before I emerge in the yard like a bear emerging from hibernation. Then the inevitable came. The sirens. “Wee-ow!” The sirens screamed non-stop. “Wee-ow!” I got up. This was my chance. I sprinted for the front gate but only made it halfway before a policeman swooped down on me like a hawk with a baton. It all went...black. Black. Black.
Let’s Play... Name That Shark!
We have some new guppies and a Red Tail Shark in our fish tank at Reception. We would love for you to enter our
Shark Naming Competition.
Please have your entry into the jar at Re- ception by close of business, Friday, June 19.
Competition winners will be announced on Facebook the following week and
in the Newsletter next term.

Funky Friday's
Looking forward to seeing your favourite furry friend. (Regular school uniform required).
LOST PROPERTY
These two cheeky dudes have found some- thing that doesn’t belong to them!!!
ARE THEY YOURS?
The Front Office has quite a few misplaced glasses, watches and other items that may be yours. If you’re missing something, please come in to take a look.

Loud was an understatement! We loved seeing everyone’s loud and colourful shirts.
Mr Palmer’s shirt was loud, loud; it had jingle bells!

God’s Amazing Creation
This term, Transition has been learning all about God’s amazing crea- tion. We have planted our very own Transition garden and are excited to see pumpkins, peas, capsicums and beautiful flowers growing as we care for them each day. We spent a whole day being seed detectives, looking closely at seeds of all different shapes and sizes and matching them up to the plants they grow into. It was amazing for us to discover that the biggest seeds do not always grow into the biggest plants. How encouraging to remember that God can take even the smallest of us and grow us into something amazing!

Why do we need to learn Maths?
ALAN CHAN | MIDDLE & SENIOR MATHS TEACHER
When students raise this question, they seem to think that Maths is only useful in the classroom or simply that “Maths is useless.” Perhaps they are right, partly right. Maths is in fact useless if we are not applying it in real life.
Maths learning is like learning to play a musical instrument. Having great instru- mental techniques and being able to play a masterpiece flawlessly may make you a great performer but not necessarily a great musician. Improvisation, the ability to create something on the spot, is what makes a great musician.
Likewise, having great calculation techniques and being able to complete text- book questions would only give you a good grade at school. Being able to apply your mathematical knowledge and skills in real life is, and it should be, the ulti- mate goal of learning.
At MCC & NTCC, one of our biggest missions is to foster students’ ability to crea- tively connect Maths to the real-life problems. Students have been exploring this

through different ‘down-to-earth’ learning activities in all year levels. For instance, the sprinkler project done by the Year 8s last year and the Car Investigation in Year 10 this term.
The Year 10 students have been using their knowledge of compound growth to compare different car financing options. They applied the concept of compound decay to understand what car depreciation is and to find out when is the best time to buy a used car. Last but not least, students also employed their knowledge of trigonometry to find out the ramp angles and break- over angles of a car, so that they could avoid scraping their dream car in the future ;)
May I encouraged all our students as you venture out into the world, keep being creative and look for where Maths is useful.
