KEZIAH DIMMICK & ISAAC POSSINGHAM | CAPTAINS Do it all for the glory of God
Like almost everyone, we have not had the 2020 that we thought we would get.
At the start of the year we were filled with excitement, ready for the last year of school and were full of ideas for the prefect body. Unfortunately, that excitement shortly turned into stress, and as the year wore on, we became anxious for our externals and exams which can add up to 30% of our grade. In this time, it is important to reflect upon how far we have already come and that we are finally on the home stretch. It is useful for us to reflect back on where we came from and to thank God for his help and bless- ing with all of our achievements. If we are not living our life for God then who are we living it for?
As Captains, we were tasked with leading the Prefect Body, which is a great honour. We had a rocky start to the year, but we pushed through our troubles and continued to dedicate ourselves to our responsibilities and prefects in everything we do. The Prefect Body has come up with some amazing ideas that we are looking to implement this semester, since we have a bit more freedom with what we are doing.
Throughout the uncertainty of the year we have continued to purse relationships with God, because without his guidance, we would be lost.

Welcome...
ALICE KEMPSTER | DEFENCE SCHOOL MENTOR
Alice is our new Defence School Mentor (DSM) at Marrara. She will be with us to support the unique needs of students who have parents in the Australian Defence Force.
The DSM role is focused towards integration, settling and the flourishing of Defence students within our school setting.
She will be with us on campus each Monday and Wednesday.
On Thursday morning, we went to see Silly Scientist and they did so many cool experiments. My top two favour- ite experiments were the lava lamp – it’s where they mixed oil, water, food colouring and tablets. It looked so cool, I couldn’t wait to go home and do it for myself. The other one was the Mentos experiment – it was a big bottle of soda and Mentos. When you dropped the Mentos in, you have a massive explosion and it made a big mess. Chloe (Year 6)
Silly Scientist was very fun. First we had a competition where we sang a song about water... of course the boys won. Secondly we made elephant toothpaste. That went very well... it was super easy as well... Lex (Year 6)
It was a normal Thursday morning and 5/6O was in for a surprise. We were greeted warmly by Michael and Mickey who were going to teach us about Science! It was very interesting at the start and it got funnier and funnier. Here are my top 3 favourite things: elephant toothpaste...the Mentos and Pepsi trick... and the optical illusions. Elly (Year 5)
One of the experiments was the stomp rocket. It was my favourite by far. They filled a bottle with air and connected it to pipes and a rocket about 30cm tall, and jumped on the bottle and the rocket went flying. Liam (Year 6)
Our ‘Deep Hope’ for the camp was that physically visiting places would connect students to their personal forma- tion of what it means to be a child of God living in community with others.
Year 7 Camp to Katherine
TONY DEEB | TEACHER & YEAR 7 CAMP COORDINATOR
Our Year 7 students spent Week 2 this term going on a tenting camp to Katherine. The purpose of the camp was to lead students out of the physical class into the local area and allow them to grow in appre- ciation of Creation. We did so much and through a range of engaging outdoor activities, the Katherine camping experience allowed a hands-on focus for this targeted learning to happen. Our ‘Deep Hope’ for the camp was that physically visiting places would connect students to their personal formation of what it means to be a child of God living in com- munity with others.
Throughout our stay, the owners of the Manbulloo Cattle Station offered us high quality accommodation. There were routine opportunities on the station to engage in bird watch-
ing, feeding horses, cattle and buffalo.
Our scenic tour of the Katherine Gorge included a spectacular two hour boat ride hosted by knowledgeable staff. This year the Cutta-Cutta Caves were closed due to the Covid-19 pandem- ic but we were so blessed to be able to visit the “Katherine Outback Experi- ence.” We were treated to viewing and interacting with a range of typical sta- tion animals. Highlights included ani- mal feeding, participating in cattle dog
training and viewing horse trainers in action.
Just before our departure for camp, we were also able to confirm our visit to the Katherine Museum. This little gem, in the heart of Katherine, offered us a chance to explore our local NT history through an amaz- ing collection of historical material. The students loved the old aircraft
hangar with its Tiger Moth biplane and displays. Areas of great interest included machines used to communicate in the past, old cars, trucks, farm equipment, household items and clothing.
For these students, education at Marrara was more than just classroom infor- mation. There was a trip out to Edith Falls with a hike to the top pool and even a time swimming at the Katherine hot springs. From team building activities on day one to unpacking the gear off the bus on day four, Year 7 Camp was all about community. We played games, sang and chatted on the bus, dressed up as newspaper super heroes, built egg protection devices, shared good food,
warmed up around a morning camp fire, and heard about God’s love and how it gives purpose to our lives – Year 7 camp was enjoyed by all!
Thank you to the drivers, Geoff and Phil; volunteers, Phil, Han- nah, Coryn and Mariah - our camp nurse; kitchen coordinator Bec; lifeguards Ruth and Phil; walk leader, Jon; and the excel- lent support from Chantelle. Their contributions created a won- derful, caring sense of community. Along with the patient admin staff and 38 students, these people made Year 7 Camp a suc- cess. A true team effort.

All about...
LAUREN DOUGLAS | SCHOOL CHAPLAIN Hi there Marrara family.
Due to this being my first news piece I thought it apt to introduce myself and to give an update on the chaplain- cy role during my three terms at MCC thus far. I am a coasty (Central Coast, NSW) by birth, however having lived in Darwin almost 7 years, I do try to claim Territo- rian status. I am soon to be married and currently living with my family who have all been in Darwin a little longer than I have. Entering chaplaincy for the first time from the world of social work has been exciting and a chal- lenge as am growing in my ability to integrate my social work and mental health experience into ministry/gospel work. I have worked at both Headspace (youth mental
health service) and Anglicare Resolve (family counselling service) during my time as a social worker and I pray that I can continue to use these experiences and training to bless the school in the way that God enables me.
I work at MCC every Thursday and Friday, and below are some of the different activities and work that I have been involved in during my time here. I hope to continue to develop these spaces to better meet the needs of the school. Prayer and feedback is welcomed and encouraged.
• Individual catch ups — I have been catching up on a semi-regular basis with a number of differ- ent students ranging from Years 2 - 12, which has involved pastoral care support, building on and exploring strategies for self-care and managing stress/anxiety, and supporting to referrals to a range of different services for specialised support.
• Family support — This has largely been through conversations over the phone and some catch ups within the school, working to support parents in their role when their young person is strug- gling, and again, supporting referrals to specialised services that can provide ongoing support. I have also been involved in facilitating the i-tech workshops for parents which have been well attended so far.
• Social and emotional workshops/groups — I have had the pleasure of running some workshops with senior school students around mental health and stress management, and would love to continue to develop and grow that space/resources for this within the school. Term 2 had me facilitating a beautiful group of Year 5/6 girls in a program that focused on resilience develop- ment through gratitude, mindfulness and empathy.
• Fun — Being a bit of a sports fan, I have tried to spend some time in the playground playing handball with the kids. I also spent some time organising two student vs staff competitions at lunch time rotating through different sports within the Senior School. Macca the Alpaca (see photo) is our mascot and he lives in the winner’s lunch room until the next game where he can be won back. This has been an enjoyable time of connection and healthy competition for staff and students and we hope to continue these games throughout the year.
