PROUD CHAPTER OF

A LETTER FROM OUR
PRESIDENT & CEO

Some time ago I wrote an article titled “VUCA” on our internal website.
I thought since we as an organization provide products to the US Army,
I would use the acronym they use quite a bit, VUCA! This acronym stands
for Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous. I feel like we have lived
and continue to live in VUCA times. This past year, not only have we dealt
with the state and rate changes, but we also merged two organizations
while living through a worldwide pandemic. However, because of our COVID protocols and the
good work staff have done, Mozaic has had one of the lowest incidence of infection rate in the Arc
community. Yet, even with all of this, our future is uncertain. What do you do when fear paralyzes?

Our answer is to push forward. We have merged our internal infrastructure with so ware platforms
in finance and payroll, updated our servers, security profile, computers, and phone systems. We also
upgraded many residences with new generators. We have won awards. Acumatica, the company
whose business so ware we use, presented us with the “Impact Company of the Year Award”.
Thousands of people learned about Mozaic and our mission. Our Duck Race and Golf events raised
record amounts this year! We became the Arc in Tompkins County. Tompkins was the only county in
NYS that did not have an Arc chapter! We began managing Challenge Workforce Solutions in Ithaca,
a non-Arc non-profit that has a long history of putting people to work in the community. We have
done all of this with record DSP vacancies. We have raised starting pay within much of the workforce.
We now sell our commercial hat brand, Arctic Gear, online all over the country!

Yes, we have overcome many obstacles and there will be more. We are deeply concerned about
the staffing crisis. There has been much advocacy at the state & federal level. We have staff who are
working multiple shi s and working outside of their normal schedule. It is through this hard work
that we are living our vision to build one strong community!

We developed a Strategic Plan that will guide us by focusing on 4 key areas: 1) Ensure financial
stability through protection of current services & revenue diversification. 2) Attract and retain high
quality staff. 3) Drive quality and innovation in everything we do. 4) Drive a culture of execution,
change management, efficiency and accountability. These focus areas will allow us to thrive &
compete as our industry changes.

VUCA affects everyone differently, but dealing with it together as a community makes it easier. By
living in the moment and focusing on what we have control over, we can overcome anything.

Allen Connely
President & CEO

A LETTER FROM OUR
BOARD CHAIR

The first full year of our merger has gone very well. We began
a management services agreement with an organization in
Ithaca that provides employment services for people with
disabilities. This led to adding Tompkins County (the only county
in New York State without an Arc chapter) to our chapter – we
now cover just over 2,100 square miles! Because an Arc chapter
with four names is unwieldly, our legal name was changed so we are now officially Mozaic.

Finger Lakes Textiles continues to grow, particularly our Arctic Gear division which has
been adding new products. From January 1st to December 31st of 2021 we have sold
22,824 hats! Please visit ArcticGear.org to see the entire product line and hopefully make
“A Purchase with a Purpose” – 100% of Arctic Gear’s profits go to programs and services for
people with I/DD. Also during the past year, our Mozaic Services obtained additional lawn
mowing and janitorial contracts, as well as added snowplowing services.

We continue to deal with everchanging state and federal regulations, including rate
reductions, the increasing minimum wage structure, and preparation for managed care.
The addition of COVID-19 to these stressors has made it physically, mentally and emotionally
a very difficult year for everyone – staff, the individuals we support, and their families. One
of the greatest issues we currently face is the staffing shortage. While this is a problem for
many businesses and organizations, it is especially difficult for service providers like us.
We are working diligently in conjunction with other chapters and with The Arc New York
to address it.

Given all that we have been and continue to deal with, I must give thanks and kudos to
our dedicated staff and to President and CEO Allen Connely; they have all surpassed the
Energizer Bunny.

As family members, friends and neighbors of the people we serve, we must all be strong,
vocal advocates for them. Please contact your local and state legislators (write, email,
phone, visit) so they will understand the effect of their actions/inactions on programs and
services, and the ensuing consequences for the individuals we support.

Thank you all for your continued care, concern and support.

Mary Pat Harris
Board Chair

Individuals

DALE CAMPBELL • SENECA COUNTY

Dale has been with Mozaic for over 28 years!
He works on Mozaic’s custodial crew, which is made up of individuals served
by Mozaic. He enjoys spending time with his wife Donna, who works at Finger
Lakes Textiles, and his stepson when he’s not working.
Dale also enjoys listening to country music and watching wrestling.
Dale says he likes working for Mozaic! He has some fond memories of working
at Spectrum Industries (one of Mozaic’s former workshops) while he was still
attending high school!

JOSH SLATER • YATES COUNTY

Josh has been with Mozaic since 2014!
Some of his favorite things to do are listening to music and attending his college
class, “U.S. History to 1877.” Josh has a great sense of humor, likes to be helpful,
and enjoys cooking! He is friendly and makes friends wherever he goes.
In his time with Mozaic, Josh has been able to start attending Keuka College. He
has learned job skills (which he continues to work on), and has learned to live
independently! Some of Josh’s favorite Mozaic memories are going to the movies,
attending Camp Whitman and Camp Cory, and being at Keuka College.

JILL GROBELNY • C AYUGA COUNTY

Jill has been a part of Mozaic for more than 20 years!
One of her favorite things to do is spend time with her cat Scoshie. She also
enjoys spending time with her boyfriend Fred watching TV and reading.
Jill says that having family makes you feel safe, and that Mozaic has impacted
her life by becoming her second family.

Sta

KRISTIE SUTHERLAND • DSP • DAY SERVICES

I have been at Mozaic for 6 years and am currently working as a DSP III. One of my favorite
parts of my job is working with the individuals we serve. When they leave saying they had
a great day despite whatever they may be going through it really warms my heart.
One of my favorite memories with the individuals is attending Camp Week! Although it
was a long week for everyone, the genuine smiles that were seen across all of the faces of
those we serve was absolutely worth it. Many experienced so many new things such as
riding on a pontoon boat, staying in a cabin, roasting s’mores on a campfire, and more!
Anyone who is looking to become a DSP needs to know that even though it is not always
the easiest job, it is one of the most rewarding. Every day you make a difference and
every day is something new.

TANESHA TERRELL • DSP • COMMUNITY SERVICES

I have been working at Mozaic for 5 years and 9 months, and my current position is
in Community Services. One of the best parts of my job is working with the
individuals and learning all sorts of new things through them and through this
position every day!
I have so many fond memories that I truly find it hard to choose just one as my
favorite. My job as a DSP is very rewarding. I would tell someone looking to work
here that you have to have a big heart!

MARY ANNE SAYLOR • DSP • RESIDENTIAL

I was originally hired as a relief staff and now have been a DSP at one of Mozaic’s
residential locations for 4 years! I really enjoy the variety of the job. Every day is
something new!
A few of my favorite memories include taking the individuals to the park for a picnic
that ended in a fun water gun fight, having the individuals in the house participate and
be featured in an Arctic Gear photoshoot, and I really love celebrating holidays that
are important to them!
Working here is one of the most rewarding jobs. You get to see the difference you
make in the lives of those you help support on a daily basis. Nothing is better than that!

Community P tn

The DRIVE Program is a highly regarded initiative
that brings a diversity of individuals with
different needs and abilities onto the Keuka
College campus immersing them with
similar-aged peers while experiencing college in
both the academic and personal sense. The
DRIVE Program is an intentional outcome of a
long-standing partnership between Keuka
College, Dundee Schools and Mozaic. A er an
academic year of uncertainty due to the global
pandemic, The DRIVE Program returned,
in-person, to Keuka College in September 2021
with an entire new teaching and support staff.
Since the semester began, the staff have
developed a new curriculum and are continually
recruiting and evaluating prospective students
for the 2021-2022 academic year.

The DRIVE Program is supported by a DRIVE steering team which is led by Dr. Beth Jordan, assistant
professor in the division of Applied Health and Wellness. The steering team is composed of other
Keuka College faculty, staff, administrators and student life representatives, Amy Cooper and Denise
Vreeland who represent Mozaic, as well as area school district educators and administrators.

The partnership between agencies work collaboratively and diligently to ensure that the students
who attend The DRIVE Program receive an education that meets their individual needs in addition
to ensuring that the mission of Keuka College and The DRIVE Program are envisioned.

Students in The DRIVE Program are integral to the college community. They attend classes with the
support of Keuka College student peer-mentors and participate in Keuka College's Field Period™
opportunities by working in various areas around the college each January. Graduates of The
DRIVE Program are recognized each year during commencement alongside all Keuka College
graduates. As an institution, The DRIVE Program is included in Keuka College's strategic plan with
the anticipation to improve opportunities with community partners to meet the unique needs of
the students in The DRIVE Program.

PROGRAM UPDATES

Residential & Supportive Housing

We are so grateful to the staff who worked in the houses during the
pandemic and stayed on top of the cleaning, disinfecting, PPE, and
screenings. We implemented new schedules to assist with coverage
during COVID, and staff did an amazing job of adapting in order to
ensure that the needs of the individuals continued to be met.

In order to keep up with their
personal progress, individuals
were able to continue receiving
programming within their homes. Staff excelled at being even more
creative with each passing day in order to maintain engagement!
In 2021, many returned to select Day Service sites and have been able
to go on a few community outings while practicing safety precautions.
This has brought some “normalcy” back to those we serve, which has
been such a breath of fresh air!

Day Services

In March 2020, Spotlight Studios won a
SAMMY Award (the equivalent to an EMMY)!
Unfortunately, all site-based day programs
shut down due to COVID shortly therea er,
but we developed new residence-based and
virtual options so that we could continue to
provide these important services to the
individuals that take part in them.
Typical Service delivery pivoted with the closure of Day programs in 2020 and throughout 2021 when
quarantining due to an exposure kept individuals from their regular routine. Individuals can continue to
attend activities through Day Hab i.e. music class, bingo, reading group, and so forth.

Community Services

Community Hab and Respite
Services continued during
the pandemic for those who
wanted them, and 2021 saw
an increase in the number
of people receiving
services. Some recent
exciting news is that the
bowling league is back up
and running! We are hopeful
that soon we will be
completely back in action!

PROGRAM UPDATES

Clinic

The Clinic has gone through some reorganization. We have implemented
Telehealth Services, which have proved to be very successful! We have
also outsourced our billing to a company that is well-versed in Article 16
billing and implemented new Electronic Medical Records. Our Cayuga
County Clinic relocated from 180 North Street to Clark Street Road and
overall the financials within the Clinic have seen significant improvements
even through COVID! We are so thankful to have been able to maintain
both financial health and overall wellness for those we serve over the
course of the past year and half.

Mozaic Services

In the midst of COVID, we began offering Commercial Disinfecting Services
to assist those within our community in combating the COVID virus. We
obtained new custodial and lawn contracts which allowed for further
expansion in both these areas. NYSID, New York State Industries for the
Disabled, presented Mozaic with a grant, which provided the funds to
purchase plows and salters for both our internal and contracted snow
removal sites. We also became a Group Purchasing Organization with Hill and
Markes as our preferred distributor. Through this, we have experienced
significant cost savings across the agency!

Finger Lakes Textiles

Finger Lakes Textiles (FLT) experienced both challenges and successes during the pandemic! Over the past year and
a half, FLT jumped into action to help other companies produce PPE such as gowns, one-time-use jumpsuits, and
antiviral desk covers. Balaclava and fleece military contracts were re-negotiated, and by August of 2021 FLT was
back on track with a full boat of military products while continuing to build inventory to meet the heightened
demands of Arctic Gear. A second circular knitting machine was purchased for increased productivity.
Arctic Gear: new colors, new styles and new connections! A connection with an online retailer infused Arctic
Gear with new life. The exposure has significantly improved recognition of the Arctic Gear brand and mission;
so much so that in January of 2021 we celebrated our ten thousandth hat sold! Additionally, Arctic Gear was
showcased at the Annual Acumatica conference in Las Vegas!

Keuka Lake School

During COVID, Keuka Lake School (KLS) was closed for one
month and then reopened June 1st for daycare. In-person
classrooms for special and general education opened up in
summer and fall. By fall of 2020, KLS had also added a third
integrated classroom! KLS now also has a contract with Wayne
and Seneca Counties to provide preschool classroom services.
One special highlight of the year was being able to raise over
$2,100 in a very last-minute fundraiser! This shows just
how strong our community is.

was a huge help during the pandemic by
disinfecting vehicles a er use, making
last minute Medicaid transportation trips,
and getting those we serve to and from
their Day Service programs safely.

AND A SPECIAL THANK YOU TO THE

COVID Response Team

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, a small group consisting
of a VP, a couple of Services Directors, and Nurses formed a
24/7 COVID Response Team, answering questions and
concerns in regards to all things COVID. They provided
guidance to the Mozaic staff as well as staff from Challenge
Industries, ensuring compliance with the ever changing
Regulations and consistency with handling symptoms,
exposures and positive cases throughout both Organizations.
This team made it possible for all of the above-mentioned
programs to continue to provide their services!
