ANNUAL REPORT 2022 | UNIVERSITI TENAGA NASIONAL 50 The Story of 2022 TOWARDS RESEARCH EXCELLENCE In June 2022, UNITEN established the National Energy Centre (NEC) to delve into energy transition, covering issues of climate change, sustainable development and renewable energy (RE) resources at both national and global levels. The establishment of the NEC represents a proactive effort by UNITEN & Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) to spearhead the energy research in the country through strategic partnership among higher learning institutions, industry and government agencies to contribute expertise in the national development agenda, including efforts to increase renewable energy capacity and address carbon emissions. Indeed, NEC will play a strategic role in strengthening Malaysia’s commitment to make the country carbon neutral as early as 2050 and meet the aspirations of zero net carbon emissions in the Sustainability Pathway 2050 (TNB Sustainability Pathway – SP2050). As a hub for collaboration, the NEC will harness the knowledge and experience of renowned figures across all industries. Embracing this advantage, the NEC possesses great potential to establish a top-tier platform where esteemed academics, industry experts, senior government officials, and even representatives from ASEAN member countries and the International Energy Agency can engage in profound discussions on energy-related matters. The NEC stands as a national centre of excellence of international standing, focusing on seven (7) main areas: 30 June 2022 - The Deputy Minister of Energy and Natural Resources (KeTSA), Datuk Ali Biju, and the Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), Datuk Ahmad Amzad Hashim officiated the soft launch of the National Energy Centre (NEC) at UNITEN Putrajaya Campus. TOWARDS ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

Teaching and Learning Centre (TLC) is a business unit in UNITEN that strives to be a catalyst in teaching and learning (T&L) excellence, and innovation that fosters sustainable education. TLC aspires to create a culture of excellence in teaching and learning through ongoing professional development, collaboration, and the promotion of innovative and inclusive teaching practices that benefits both academics and students alike. In line with the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE)’s shifts into Substitute Blended Learning (SBL), UNITEN moves in tandem with the implementation of SBL which includes the details of Student Learning Time (SLT) as well as the course delivery plan so that it is more balanced and structured. In this regards, UNITEN SBL Guideline has been published on 8 December 2022 to support the academics in implementing SBL. A proper implementation phase has been outlined and a series of roadshows have been conducted at colleges to ensure a seamless SBL implementation. SBL is expected to be on a roll-out phase in Semester 1, 2023/2024. One of the important aspects in T&L is to ensure the academics are able to assess the effectiveness of their teaching and learning strategies. The open-book assessment has been identified as an assessment strategy that focuses on higher-level learning skills, and tests students’ understanding of a subject matter or its application to real-world problems. A guide for academics on Open-Book Final Examination was published by TLC on 30 September 2022 that aims to support in designing the questions and related processes of the implementation. TLC continues to assist UNITEN in recognising the academics who excel in their teaching through Teaching Excellence Award (TEA) and Blended Learning Best Practices Award (BLA). In an event to recognise the excellent recipients for Special Semester, 2020/2021 and Semester 1, 2021/2022 on 28 March 2022, a total of 23 academics were awarded with TEA and a total of 30 academics were awarded with BLA. For Semester 2 and Special Semester, 2021/2022, a total of 24 and 43 academics were awarded with TEA and BLA respectively in an event on 9 December 2022. TEACHING & LEARNING CENTRE TLC’s core responsibilities include: To enhance T&L practices through designated focus areas To promote quality T&L practices To offer continuous professional development programmes for academic staff 53 ANNUAL REPORT 2022 | UNIVERSITI TENAGA NASIONAL The Story of 2022 TOWARDS ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE To inculcate the use of technology in innovative T&L practices To nurture student’s growth via learning support programmes
