OIL PAINTINGS MADE IN ISOLATION 2020
Sarah Needham
RESPONSES
This is a series of four oil paintings made
during the initial period of isolation due to the
Corona Virus. The work relates to earlier works
in the Caprtured Ships collection and
references the ideas of gyres, powerful
centrifugal forces that can easily loose balance
and spin out of control.
The idea of a contrast between dynamism
and stasis felt very pertinent to me. Using
pigments extant in my collection, carbon black
and burnt Sienna I made these works with
gestural marks, but at the same time a
completely pared back aesthetic. They feel like
works that contain contradictory forces. And
they relate very closely to the Responses on
Paper work, of which there are very many
more, in part due to the constraints of space
and material availability when lock down was
at its most extreme.
