Career Exploration Portfolio

Career Research Worksheet

This worksheet is about the career field as a whole. For example, you are researching
“education” and not second grade science teacher.

Please add spacing to this document and type your answers under the questions below. Be sure to
highlight your answers in yellow so I can identify your information quickly.

1. What is your intended career? If you are not sure of a career right now, choose one of interest to
explore. Trauma Psychiatrist

2. Find a professional website for your career. You can find this on the OOH (Occupational Outlook
Handbook). Go to the “more info” tab and then click on the name of a professional website for that
career. The OOH is NOT the professional website for a specific career. What is the name of the
website? Please provide the link here. As a last resort, if you cannot find a professional website on
the OOH, you may find a professional website sometimes by using google. (Please show me first in
class if you had to use google.) www.psychiatry.org American Psychiatric Association

3. Using the OOH (“more info” tab), a professional website specific to your career, or the library
database, find one professional/academic journal (something that comes out periodically either in
print or web form) related to your career. What is the name of the journal?
Link.springer.com/journal/11126 Psychiatric Quarterly

4. Field/discipline:
a. Identify the career field/discipline. For example, if the career is a teacher then the field
is education or if the career is mechanic then the field is automotive industry.
Medical
b. Identify a specific position or title in the field/discipline (for example, an elementary
school teacher or body work repair mechanic). Trauma Psychiatrist
c. Identify two related positions in a similar or related field/discipline in which you may be
interested (for example, a day care worker and college instructor or machine repair and
certified dealer service manager). Child Psychiatrist, Emergency Psychiatrist

5. Knowledge /Training:
a. List the minimum education required Doctorate, Med School + Residency
b. List any required certifications or licenses. How often do you have to renew the
certification or license? How many hours of continuing education units (CEU) do you have
to obtain each year to keep that certification or license?
After residency you apply to be board certified by American Board of Psychiatry and
Neurology. Also, you’ll have your license to be a doctor.

c. List the majority of the skills needed to be successful in this job.
You have to be hardworking, understanding, insightful, and in my opinion compassionate.

d. How many years of experience are required to work in this career?
4+ years of residency

6. Salary/Earnings:
a. List the hiring (starting) salary range. (Use current position listing or job boards.)
$194,740
b. What is the average salary (not the highest) ?
$163,660

7. Future of this career:
a. What is the job outlook for this career? In other words, is this in a growing area? Explain
the growth or decline (in numbers) of this particular career. This career is growing rapidly

b. List the availability of this career in the market area of Houston, and Texas in general,
and/or other states in which you are interested in working. Doctors are always needed so I
feel that there will definitely be availability of this career and if not I will just open my own
practice.

c. Can this an international career choice? Explain why or why not. Do YOU want to work
internationally, and if so, why?
This could easily be an international career choice considering it is in the medical field. I say
this because doctors are needed all over the world.

8. Daily Activities:
a. What do people in this field or job do? In at least 10 complete sentences in your own
words, (not a list) describe a typical day for this position. Be very specific and thorough.
(For example, for a teacher you do not want to JUST say that a teacher teaches students all
day. WHAT does that look like? What else does a teacher do?)
People in the medical field can do many different things. That being said their everyday is
different from everyone else. For instance a surgeon could perform a different surgery
everyday or the same one. As a psychiatrist this is a little different. If you work in a hospital
the patients you get are going to be different then the patients you get if you have your
own practice. I’m going to do my typical day for this position based on someone that has
their own practice. So they create their own schedule so they probably would start seeing
people at 8am like most doctors do and then they would see the scheduled patients they

have. Depending on the patient they would provide different forms of treatment and
possibly the time frame of each session would be different. For some patients a hour
session will be just fine but others might need more help. After they would probably make
sure they have their schedule set for the week and have all the paperwork they need done.

9. Career and you (in complete sentences):
a. How does this career align to your interests and personality? Use your Do What You Are
results to justify your alignment.
i. List your four initials. ESTJ
ii. Explain what your initials mean. My initials mean that I am outgoing, strong-willed,
responsible, friendly, and confident.
iii. Explain how those initials match or do not match your career choice. I think that my
initials match this career perfectly. You have to be very responsible, strong-willed,
and friendly to be in this profession which I am all of these things.
b. Why is this career significant to you? Why did you choose to go into this career? What
inspired you? This career is very significant to me because it is my dream job that is actually
realistic. I choose this career because I love psychology but also love the medical field so it is
perfect. My dad really inspired me considering he was a doctor so I was exposed to the
medical field early on in my life.
c. Describe how and why or why not this assignment altered or completely changed your
career path. The project did not alter my career path because it is my dream and that’s not
going to change.

Resume/ Cover Letter

From the article and video I learned a bunch of things regarding resumes and cover letters one of
the things I learned was to include your GPA on your resume which I never thought to do.
Another thing I learned is to not include your references with your resume. They recommended
bring it along for the interview so if they ask for it you're prepared. Also, I learned how to format
a Cover Letter which I did not know how to do considering I have never made one. Like I said
before I've never written a cover letter so I did not even know where to start which now I do.
Furthermore, I found out that employers spend less than a minute on every resume, which is
crazy! This means that you need to make yourself stand out and memorable in just a few
seconds. I also learned you need to change things on your cover letter every time you apply for a
different job. Now these changes might be little but they are still relevant and I probably would
have over looked them if I hadn't watched and read the material. All in all the article and the
video has given me the insight to make a killer resume and cover letter.

Career Exploration
The career I decided to explore was a Psychiatrist. I choose this certain career because I
love psychology but also love the medical field. Another thing that possibly influenced my
decision was the fact my dad was a doctor and both of my older sisters are in Medical School.
Some people might say it runs in my blood. I feel my DWYA results really fit for this career
considering it said I needed a career with human interaction, to be able to use things I know but
also learn new things, and to be able to have control. It also brought up how I am strong-willed,
responsible, outgoing, and friendly which I feel is all good qualities for this job. Most of the
research I did I knew previously such as the need for medical school and then residency.
In order to be a Psychologist there is a lot of schooling you need to do. You are required
to have an undergraduate degree, a DO or MD or otherwise known as Medical School, after
medical school then you have to go to residency. There is plenty of skills recommended for this
job such as being able to handle a stressful job environment. Also, you need to be responsible
considering you are helping people with their mental health.
A life in this profession and other people in the medical field can do many different
things. That being said their everyday is different from everyone else. For instance, a surgeon
could perform a different surgery every day or the same one. As a psychiatrist though it is a very
different lifestyle. If you work in a hospital the patients you get are going to be different then the
patients you get if you have your own practice. I’m going to do my typical day for this position
based on someone that has their own practice. So they create their own schedule so they
probably would start seeing people at 8am like most doctors do and then they would see the

scheduled patients they have. Depending on the patient they would provide different forms of
treatment and possibly the time frame of each session would be different. For some patients a
hour session will be just fine but others might need more help. After they would probably make
sure they have their schedule set for the week and have all the paperwork they need done. I think
that I will love every aspect of this job I have the choice to work under a hospital or open up my
practice which gives me control and flexibility which I will really enjoy. I will also enjoy the fact
I will be helping people. Mental health hasn’t always been taken serious which I think is absurd
considering how much it factors into your everyday life. I want to no to not only be able to help
other with their mental health but also bring more awareness.

At this point in my education I still have a long journey ahead of me to get to where I
want to be. I feel like I am on the right track though, considering I am in school and I am excited
to stay I am going to be attending University of Central Florida in the fall. This is a very good
thing because I believe it will help my chances of medical school and also I feel I will be in a
better environment. I am ready to be on my own and be able to focus on myself and be able to
stay on the path I have decided to take. With being on my own and being closure to my sisters
that both live in Florida and are in medical school I feel I will be more driven, though I don’t see
how I could be anymore then I am now. I think it will benefit me being close to my sister
because they have taken all of the classes I am taking and will be able to help me. Other ways I
will prepare myself by staying completely dedicated and focused. I also will prepare myself by
doing research and continue to challenge myself anyway I can considering the medical field is
such a challenging profession. This will be hard but I am prepared to take on anything that gets
in my way.
